HAPPY NEW YEAR! JANUARY LAWN CARE Whether you’re new to Texas or have lived here all your life, you might be wondering how to keep your grass healthy throughout winter so you have a lush, green lawn come spring. If you need a few pointers, just follow these guidelines below and give your lawn the care it needs to thrive all year round! 1. Tailor your watering to the season. Since we rarely get snow in this part of Texas, our lawn still needs to be taken care of in winter. Keep in mind that grass needs about 1 to 2 inches of rain per week, including any rainfall. Be sure to water your lawn if it’s been a few weeks without rain, as it’s probably thirsty. In terms of when and how to water your lawn, early morning is best so it can dry throughout the day and stave off lawn diseases. 2. Try to stay off the lawn. It may be tempting to walk across your lawn as a shortcut, but use the designated walking paths if possible. Although grass is pretty resilient, it can still get worn down if it’s repeatedly trampled on. Likewise,

try to keep your lawn clear of stray objects or children’s toys so it can breathe. And of course, if you park a car or truck on your lawn, your grass may not fare so well. 3. Use stray leaves to your advantage. Not only can a solid blanket of leaves suffocate your lawn, but they can provide warmth and shelter for a variety of lawn nuisances like rodents, fungi and insects. However, you don’t necessarily need to bag up all those leaves and take them to the curb. They can actually be a great source of nutrients for your grass if you turn them into a mulch. Twin Lakes Women’s Association is having a special Book Club meeting in January. We invite all women to join us on Thursday, January 21st at 7 PM in the clubhouse for a discussion of Richard Cunningham’s novel, ‘Maude Brown’s Baby.’ Richard and his editor, Lily Ann (who is also his wife), will be there to talk with us about the book and their experiences writing and editing it. Richard is a freelance science writer and commercial photographer (and he is the brother of Diana Holden, who lives here in Twin Lakes).

The book is set in Galveston in 1918. The main character, having been orphaned in the Great Storm of 1900, sets out on a quest to learn his identity with a photograph of himself as an infant the only clue. When he solves the mystery, he discovers both the tragedy of his family and the source of his passion for photography.

‘Maude Brown’s Baby’ is available in paperback from Amazon.com and in digital format through Kindle. It is also sold in Houston at the River Oaks Bookstore.

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. January 2016

Twin Lakes

• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. When MLK Jr. was a little boy, it saddened him that he could not befriend people who were not black. He knew in his heart that just because people may look different on the outside, the contents of their hearts and their character is what makes a person valuable. Martin Luther King Jr. saw a social problem, developed a dream and eventually by taking action, he changed the United States as well as the world. He is still today among the most well-known social activists in the world. • Martin Luther King Jr. led the bus boycott in 1955 that was sparked by Rosa Parks. • He helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, an organization that worked for civil rights. • He was the leader of the entire civil rights movement in the 1960s that called for working out conflicts with kindness and love as opposed to hate and violence. • Martin Luther King Jr. fought for and achieve mandatory equal voting rights in America for blacks and whites. • Martin Luther King Jr. led lunch counter sit-ins where he and other blacks and whites demanded equal treatment in restaurants for people of all races. • Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent peaceful demonstrations proved to the world that action without violence can be effective and successful. • Because of Martin Luther King Jr., it is no longer legal in the United States to segregate or discriminate based on skin color. • The standard has been set for all nations to treat everyone equally regardless of skin color because of the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Courtesy of: http://castle.eiu.edu/

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School.

St. Cuthbert Episcopal School’s 2016-2017 registration will start on February 2nd at 8 AM and will continue each day during school hours until all of our spots are full. We offer 2, 3 or 5 day classes for students, ages 18 months - 5 year olds. St. Cuthbert School is now offering a Bridge to Kindergarten class for the 2016-2017 school year. Our bridge program is designed for children who are not quite ready for kindergarten. We recognize the need to engage children with summer or fall birthdays who are five years old, entering Kindergarten or First grade the following school year, however still need a bit more time before entering a rigorous learning environment. The development of the essential building blocks allows children to succeed at learning with greater ease and confidence; by helping them bridge the academic and social gaps necessary to be positive and productive classroom leaders. Our school hours are Monday-Thursday 9 AM-2 PM and Friday 9 AM-12 noon. The program provides a loving, Christian environment offering the children weekly chapel, as well as music/movement, library and computer classes. Our curriculum includes Handwriting Without Tears, reading and math. The program is open to all children, regardless of race, nationality or faith. St. Cuthbert School is NAEYC accredited. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH

St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church will hold their 15th annual Chili Cook-Off and Chili Bowl on Saturday, January 30th, from 12-2 PM. This event is open to the public. Come and sample our chilies and place your vote for your favorite and see if it becomes the grand prize winner. Then join the team for a fun game of football right on our front lawn. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. You are invited to the Ash Wednesday services at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on February 10th at 6:30 AM, 4:30 PM and 7 PM. All services have Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes. The 4:30 PM service is designed for children and their families. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which is dedicated to reflection, prayer and fasting in preparation for Easter.
