CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2015! Happy FATHERS’s Day! GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE

Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

And contrary to what some cynics contend, this holiday was not the invention of a greeting card company - commercial greeting cards as we know them didn’t even exist when Sonora Smart Dodd thought up Father’s Day in 1909. Father’s Day was the brainchild of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother had died giving birth to her. At a time when many widowed men sent their offspring to live with relatives, Sonora’s father reared her and her five siblings alone on a farm in eastern Washington. LIBRARY OFFERS SUMMER FUN FOR EVERYONE The Lone Star College-CyFair Branch offers a Summer Reading Program for children and adults June 1st through Aug. 8th. 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition, the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund Grant for operations in our upcoming season. These grants are highly competitive and we are proud to have been among the recipients. The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how

Cornerstone UMC Launches Summer Shoe Drive! Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. On March 28, 2015, Eagle scout candidate Miguel Casanova carried out his Eagle project with the assistance of 26 scouts and adults from Boy Scout Troop 1296. A long paved walkway was constructued at Mcfee Elementary, running from the school portable buildings to the nearby street. The walkway will help improve the pathway from the local neighborhood to Mcfee Elementary school for both students and the public. Miguel and Troop 1296 built the pathway with weed block, pavers and sand, where there was previously a grassy area with poor drainage which was becoming muddy due to a combination of foot traffic and recent rain. The resulting pathway is the result of many scouts participating (almost 200 hours combined) in the hard digging in preparation for laying the final pavers and sand. Congratulations on a job well done!

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). BOY SCOUT TROOP 61

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. STRAWBERRY CREAM CHEESE COBBLER 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 cup milk 1 cup of all Purpose flour 1 cup sugar 2 Teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 quarts whole strawberries, washed and tops off 4 oz cream cheese, cut into small pieces. Preheat oven 350 degrees. melt butter and pour into 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish. in a small bowl mix together the egg,milk,flour,sugar,baking powder, and salt. Pour directly over the butter in the baking dish, but do not stir. Add the strawberries,arranging in a single layer as much as possible. Sprinkle cream cheese pieces over strawberries. Place in preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes or until top is golden brown and edges are bubbling. ( crust rises up and around the fruit, but fruit will still pop a little out of top)

TWIN LAKES CHILDREN’S CREATIVITY CLUB Creativity has gone to a new level as we have enlisted a qualified art instructor who has brought her great skill and enthusiasm to the group. Karen Hellstorm has taught art to many different age groups, in many different settings and countries. We have been under her instruction for the past month and both children and parents are overjoyed and look forward each week to the encounter. The group meets weekly on Thursdays at 4:30 PM. The Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County ReStore is a retail outlet that handles donated building materials, construction supplies, appliances and furniture, which are then offered to the general public at greatly reduced prices. The ReStore is open Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM. A key goal of the ReStore is to re-cycle and thus reduce the amount of solid waste placed into our vital landfills. Thousands of community members helped bring CypressFairbanks ISD’s 75th Anniversary school year celebration to a close at the 75th Anniversary Festival at the Berry Center on April 25th. Sponsored by Northwest Dodge and Bridgeland, the year-end celebration capped a school year that has paid tribute to 75 years of excellence dating back to the union of the Cypress and Fairbanks school systems in 1939.

The free event kicked off in the front parking lot of the Berry Center with carnival amusements, games, bounce houses, a climbing wall, a juggler, unicyclist, stilt walker and a horse-and-buggy ride. More than 60 vendor booths lined the center of the carnival. Local countrywestern band Sawdust Road provided musical entertainment and guests dined from various food trucks. A stilt walker greets a child in the carnival section of the 75th Anniversary Festival celebration. The evening concluded inside Berry Center Stadium, where spectators were treated to performances by Martial Arts USA, the Cypress Lakes and Cypress Ranch high school drill teams and the Cy-Fair High School marching band. Student representatives from each district campus paraded into the stadium while holding a banner bearing their school’s name, then performed “We’ve Schools Everywhere,” a spin-off of the song “I’ve Been Everywhere” that listed each district school and support facility.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS CHAMPIONS Texas Christian High School is proud of Elisa Kendall and Yvonne Zhao for winning TCAL Doubles State Championship in Tennis at San Marcos Academy in San Marcos, TX. Elisa Kendall also came home with the TCAL Singles State Championship making her a 3 Time State Champion. The two ladies have worked hard to perfect their talent and it shows. Great job Lady Tigers!!!
