CY-RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INVITED TO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE The Cypress Ridge High School Symphony Orchestra will be joining an elite group of musicians with its invitation to the 69th annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference, the world’s largest instrumental music education conference, is scheduled for December 16th - 19th. Cypress Ridge is the first orchestra from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD to be chosen to perform. The 110 member Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra is among six international high school orchestras that will perform at the conference. Every year, groups of every type and size from all over the world apply for the honor of performing at the conference. The Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra was chosen based on its excellent resume of past contest performances and on a recorded audition submitted in March. The invitation to participate is an honor and culmination of the orchestra members many years of hard work and practice under the leadership of their director, Mr. Christopher Mustell. The orchestra recognizes the once-in-a-lifetime experience and looks forward to representing Cypress Ridge, CFISD and Houston. The expenses for this opportunity are challenging and expected to run $1,500 per student. Community support will be vital in making sure every symphony orchestra member may participate. Personal and business sponsorships will help support the program and reduce the student musicians’ costs. Donations are tax deductible and may be sent to: Cypress Ridge High School Orchestra c/o Mr. Christopher Mustell 7900 North Eldridge Parkway Houston, TX 77041 Please check out their public Facebook page, Cypress Ridge High School Symphony Orchestra Friends and Family, for upcoming opportunities to attend local concerts, participate in fundraisers and information regarding sponsorships.

TWIN LAKES FAMILY HOLIDAY PARTY

TWIN LAKES PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP

(SAVE THE DATE)

FRIDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 11TH This party is for the whole family and the entire neighborhood is welcome. Last year’s party was a great success thanks to the many families in attendance. This year we would like to have as much neighborhood participation as possible in all aspects of the party. The TLWA are therefore calling on you as neighbors to come forward if you are interested in helping to plan, organize, cook, donate to, etc. or just want to be involved. The theme for the party this year is “Winter Wonderland.” The party will feature the highlight of last year: the popular Holiday Train which will travel around the neighborhood again to show riders the beautiful holiday lights and decorations - a huge hit with adults and children alike; Santa’s Grotto, multiple activities for the family as well as food and drinks. Some specific requests for our neighbors, please: 1. If anyone is having their trees pruned and/or getting rid of any tree limbs please get in touch (contact given below) as we could possibly use them for decorative purposes. 2. Feel free to donate any old holiday decorations. 3. Keep us in mind when planning your external decorations! The children especially were extremely excited to see the lights from the train. 4. We will be encouraging the children to dress up (not required) for the winter wonderland/ holiday theme. Be creative! No need to buy new ski-wear, snow monsters, ice princesses, penguins and of course feel free to dust off those “Frozen” costumes. Many thanks in advance, Caroline Okelo 832-799-2510; cokelo02@yahoo.com.

Serving Houston Since 1978

The Twin Lakes playgroup has now been a part of the neighborhood for nearly two years and has at its core approximately 10 international families meeting every Thursday morning beginning at 10 AM-12 PM at member’s homes. Our children have grown up together for two years, which is a significant length of time in their short histories. During this time, we have also had new babies added to the group and so the group continues even as some of our older children move on to school. We are an extremely open and friendly group and encourage any parents/caregivers of preschool children in the neighborhood to get in touch for an opportunity for the children to play while the adults chat in comfortable home environs. Caroline Okelo 832-799-2510; cokelo02@yahoo.com.

TWIN LAKES CHILDREN’S CREATIVITY CLUB A children’s group to develop/enhance/encourage our children’s creativity. Our certified teacher, Karen Skinner has many years of experience teaching children of all ages and abilities, as well as adults. We meet every Thursday in two groups divided by age: under 5s at 3:30 PM for 45 minutes and over 5s at 4:30 PM for 1 hour. The charge is $12/child/ class (Subject to demand classes can be arranged for all aged children/adults). The creations during the class are always age appropriate so that the children remain engaged and are proud of what they are able to produce and take home at the end. We hope to liven up the neighborhood events with our creations, as well as creativity. It is an opportunity for children of the neighborhood to socialize in a structured way. Please contact for further details: Caroline Okelo 832799 2510; cokelo02@yahoo.com.

TWIN LAKES SHARE & PRAYER

OUT TO LUNCH: POSH & PUBS

As I write it’s early September and there’s a great line-up of restaurants in Houston for the fall! First the Posh: On Sept. 30th, the gang is headed to an “up-scale” restaurant that has great on-line reviews, called simply “Up,” in Highland Village; it’s over Cole-Haan. Then for the Pub! Oct. 21st, we’re going on a romp to The Red Lion, the pub on Shepherd for Chicken Tikka Masala or Shepherd’s Pie! Join us at 2316 S. Shepherd, 77019, at noon on Oct. 21st or meet at Carol’s (13402 Sundowner) at 11:30 AM to carpool. October, November and December, we plan to meet on the third Wednesdays. Other plans for fall include Perbacco, a fabulous Italian spot downtown and the Indian fusion restaurant Indika. Call Carol at 713-305-9809 for more info. Every single woman who is a resident of Twin Lakes is welcome. Means everybody… yep, means you!

Twin Lakes

This group meets to care for each other in friendship and to learn how to pray together. Beginning Monday evenings at 6:30 PM, Sept. 21st through Oct. 19th, we met/will meet weekly in the home of Patty Napp, 5302 Gold Medal Circle to delve into a video series by Beth Moore, an outstanding Bible study leader. For this series, we consider beyond the pleasant (or dreaded) feeling of going to church, what does it mean to develop an interior life with Jesus? Beth Moore explores this in her video series, Sacred Secrets. There are good secrets and bad and they manifest in our lives. Jesus is the God that brings hope and life and comfort. Rather than a specific study of Bible books or verses, this is more a reflective study that brings us into a vulnerable and open place before God to bring comfort to the deep areas of the heart. Searching for how to be closer to God? It’s an amazing thing that he wants to be close to us. Are there old secrets that continue to haunt and hurt? We can support and help each other. All is confidential. Zero pressure group.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER WANTED: YOUR NEWSLETTER ITEMS

PLEASE, CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOGS!

Do you want to acknowledge a family member or neighbor’s birthday, anniversary or graduation? Would you like to express your appreciation for an act of kindness? Do you have a photo, a commentary or words of wisdom to share with your Twin Lakes neighbors?

Please, for all the neighbors’ enjoyment of our beautiful community, please remove any “gifts” your dog leaves on private and/or common property.

If so, why not take the opportunity to submit these items to our community newsletter? Articles should be typed and submitted BEFORE the newsletter deadline, which is the 10th of each month. Please contact Crest Management, at 281579-0761, for more information.

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NORTHWEST HARRIS COUNTY RESTORE The Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County ReStore is a retail outlet that handles donated building materials, construction supplies, appliances and furniture, which are then offered to the general public at greatly reduced prices. Please keep the ReStore in mind for both donations and for purchases. Donation pick-up is available for large items or large quantities. All of the proceeds are used by Habitat for Humanity to provide affordable housing for deserving families. Visit the ReStore at 13350 Jones Rd. 77070 NorthHouston or call 832-327-1120. Halloween is a kid’s delight. It’s a blast to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties and most of all, eat candy. At the same time, Halloween can be scary for parents. Costumes can be dangerous, too much candy can be sickening and walking around at night can be risky.

"THE CHAMPION OF APPLIANCE REPAIR"

“We work as unto the Lord”

HALLOWEEN TIPS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these tips to make sure your little ghouls, goblins and princesses have a safe Halloween: S - Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible. A - Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Children should walk in groups or with a trusted adult. F - Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters. E - Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten. H - Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help see and help others see you. A - Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it when done to avoid skin irritation. L - Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. L - Lower the risk for serious eye injury by avoiding decorative contact lenses. O - Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. W - Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls. E - Eat only factory-wrapped candy. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook. E - Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. N - Never walk near lit candles or other open flames. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes. If you’re hosting a party or expecting trick-or-treaters: • Provide healthy treats, such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix or pretzels. Offer fruits, vegetables and cheeses to party guests. • Use party games and trick-or-treating as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity. • Make sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause falls. • Keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and other open flames away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of reach of pets and small children and never leave them unattended. • Drive safely and watch out for trick-or-treaters.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATER CO.

ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016 “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press.

MAINSTAGE SEASON - 2015 All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mac Wellman’s Dracula: By Mac Wellman, Directed by Jennifer Decker. Mac Wellman’s bizarre and offbeat version of DRACULA completely re-vamps Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Campy and fun, it is the story of two sexually repressed women who find freedom and passion in the vampiric world in the late days of Victorian London. The show was one of Mildred’s Umbrella’s earliest productions and was originally staged by the company in 2004. On Sunday, July 19th, Josh Gilliam, son of Jim & Pam Gilliam of Copperfield, earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. Josh is a member of Troop 202, a troop sponsored by Middlegate Village Homeowner’s Association. Troop 202 meets regularly on Mondays at 7 PM at Copperfield Church.

NETBALL CLUBS

Houston Shooting Stars welcomes ladies, men and youth to join in, play and learn netball, Tuesday nights at The British School of Houston. We are also looking for interested players, adults and youth to play in a new Katy Netball club. No experience necessary. For more information, go to our facebook page, Houston Shooting Stars Netball Club or www.netballamerica.com or contact houstonnetball@netballamerica. com for further information.

For his Eagle project and at the recommendation given by Josh’s church - Copperfield Church, Josh chose to build a work table/cabinet for the church staff ’s resource room. The cabinet was used to replace a limited, portable 6’ table. The cabinet was constructed of ¾” oak ply-wood with an attractive laminate countertop. The bottom consisted of six cubby-hole shelves (3 in front and back) which will be used for storage. Josh used his funds to purchase the materials from Home Depot. With the help of adult and youth volunteers from Troop 202, as well as scout friends

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School.
