After the season is over, we will once again offer a Fall Swim Program for swimmers looking for conditioning and stroke development. It will run from August 25th-Ocotber 29th. Registration will be open at the beginning of August on the LOEST website. The clinic is available to all families, new and returning, but slots are limited. GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.

4

- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

FALL SEASON LAWN CARE Texans across the state continue to enjoy a grilling summer! The heat gave our plants quite the beating but there is hope to refresh and bring back your garden and lawn to life. Here are some tips on preparing yards for autumn: • Fertilize: best way to remember when to fertilize is with the holiday method - St Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and then Thanksgiving, plus a bonus day before Christmas. • Overseed with annual ryegrass: Bermudagrass goes dormant and turns brown in the winter months, so you can overseed it with annual ryegrass. The ryegrass grows and stays green during the cooler months, then dies out once it gets hot - just as your Bermudagrass starts turning green again. • Prevent winter weeds: Stop pesky winter weeds just like you did summer species: Use a pre-emergence herbicide from mid-October to mid-November. • Finish up mowing: Keep mowing your lawn as it slows down during the fall season. Don’t let it get too long as it goes dormant. Courtesy of bhg.com

THE HARDEST WEEKS OF SCHOOL By the time the September issue is in hands, school will be in session. Kids will be getting adjusted to the normal daily routine they are used to for 9-10 months out of the year. Or will they? The first two weeks of school can be the most difficult - for students, teachers and administration. Here’s why: • New schedule adjustment - sleeping early, waking up early and adhering to a schedule are challenging. • New teachers - equals new classroom policies and procedures, new classroom management techniques, new way of learning, new authority figure. • New classmates - everyone will be seeing some familiar, many new faces. • New grade/learning level - it is intimidating to go to a new grade or even new learning level. It is equally stressful for teachers and administration to adjust to a whole new group of students. • New hopes - everyone will have goals; however, only the most dedicated and driven will be able to achieve them. YOU CAN DO IT!

The Flory Team’s Realtor® Tips to Beat the Heat without the A/C COOL OVER PRESSURE

ICE, ICE BABY!

Wrap a damp cloth around your wrists, neck and feet. Keeping these pressure point areas cool actually brings your overall body temperature down!

By freezing your bottled water, you can instantly cool your body by holding it to your skin then, once it melts, hydrate yourself with the melted water!

BEDTIME CHILLS

SUMMER BREEZE

Try using a damp (not soaking wet) sheet as your primary blanket. This technique was used by ancient Egyptians as a night-time cooling technique.

Make yourself feel fine by adding ice to a large tub and using a standing fan to create your own personal A/C. This method is much more cost effective.

Labor Day will be celebrated by families around the country with picnics, barbecues, road trips and sports events. It is the last blast of the summer vacation season. Labor Day now is a federal holiday and most Government offices, schools and, businesses are closed. Here are some interesting Labor Day Facts. • Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto, but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. • The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches and a picnic. • Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. • On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. • What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce. • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines. • The year in which the 8-hour day was firmly established was 1916 with the passage of the Adamson Act. This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies.

• Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day, as it unofficially marked the end of summer. • The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. • Labor Day is the unofficial last day of vacation before the start of the new school year (and mourned by students all over). Stated differently, it is the Back-to-School kickoff (cheered by parents all over!). Courtesy of Forbes.com

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things.

• Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

Become a Dental Assistant in just 10 weeks!

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

5 Things to do Before Putting Your Home on the Market 1. Have a pre-sale home inspection. Be proactive by arranging for a pre-sale inspection. An inspector will be able to give you a good indication of the trouble areas that will stand out to potential buyers, and you’ll be able to make repairs before open houses begin. 2. Organize and clean. Pare down clutter and pack up your least-used items. Store items off-site or in boxes neatly arranged in garage. Clean the windows, carpets, walls, lighting fixtures, and baseboards to make the home shine. 3. Get replacement estimates. Have big-ticket items that are worn out or will need to be replaced soon? Get estimates to replace - the figures will help buyers determine if they can afford the home, and will be handy when negotiations begin. 4. Find your warranties and surveys. Gather all warranties and user manuals, along with survey of the property. 5. Spruce up the curb appeal. Pretend you’re a buyer and stand outside your home. What is your first impression? Lawn & bushes neatly manicured? Pretty flowers and plants framing the entrance? Replace dead or sorry looking plants and mulch.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016 “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history. October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell?

George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
