BOY SCOUTS HOMESCHOOL CUB SCOUT PACK 164 Attention home school families!!! Homeschool Pack 164 is a Christian Homeschool Cub Scout Pack chartered by West Houston Home Educators (www.whhe.org) that serves the Greater West Houston/Katy area. Our Pack promotes God, Country and service! We are a part of the Sam Houston Area Council (www.shac.org) and Texas Skies District (www.texasskiesdistrict.org). If you have a boy entering 1st grade (age 6) through 5th grade (age 10), we invite you to please come join in the fun! Visit our website www.homeschoolpack.com for more information about our Pack registration and meeting times.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 10 Boy Scout Troop 10 meets every Tuesday night during the school year at the West Houston Church of Christ on West Road and Queenston. Our meetings begin at 7 PM. We spend our time working on merit badges, planning for our monthly camp outs and having fun!! The older boys had a great time camping at Pedernales State Park last month. They were able to hike, Geocache and work on several outdoor skills. The new Pedro Scouts also camped at Bear Creek Park. This was their introductory camp out that helped prepare them for the longer camp outs to come. We finished out the month with our 1st Annual Red and Tan Banquet! The boys participated in a table-decorating contest, won door prizes and ate delicious BBQ provided by Weatherly Catering! After the banquet we switched gears and began our semi-annual Court of Honor. The boys and parents were very proud as we watched several of them advance in rank. If you have a son in the 6th grade or higher that would like to join in the fun and adventure please contact us. Our Scout Master is Michael Widaski and his number is 713-376 5166. You can also contact our Committee Chairperson, Joseph Jefferson, at 281-684-5197 or check our website at www.bsat10.com.

DROUGHT AND FOUNDATIONS Don’t forget your foundations in this ongoing drought! Your foundation can be very expensive to repair and the lack of water in our area is putting many in danger of shifting and cracking. If you go online and do a search for ‘drought and foundations,’ you will find almost every news outlet has given a story on this problem, with suggestions on how to avoid major damage.

LANGHAM CREEK CHEERLEADER NEWS The Langham Creek Cheerleaders would like to congratulate the Lobo Boys Basketball team on being District Champions and carrying their season into the playoffs. It was a fantastic season and we are looking forward to another exciting one next year! The cheerleaders held their annual banquet at Spring Chateau in Spring, Texas on February 10th. The girls looked beautiful, Josh (aka Larry the Lobo) looked handsome and everyone enjoyed an elegant meal with family and friends. All had fun dancing the night away until fireworks capped the evening in grand style. This was a well-deserved treat for a squad that works hard all year round to support our school. The Lobo cheerleaders traveled to San Antonio to participate in the Cheer Power Southern National Championship February 17th – 18th. The girls faced some unexpected last minute changes, but they pulled together as a team, performed tremendously in front of a huge Lobo crowd and were awarded 3rd place. The weekend was a wonderful experience for all involved. A special thanks to Coach Kristen Schulze and Coach Anne Lee for an outstanding season. It does not go unrecognized how hard you work for the cheer squad on top of an already demanding teaching schedule. Thank you for all you do! Go Lobos!

Second, the study assessed the effectiveness of distributing financial resources, taking into consideration the number of students in its school district. “We wanted to see the amounts of financial resources these organizations distributed through programs to help students,” Caruthers said. A new topic added to this recent study was the role of volunteers. “The ability to grow and sustain large numbers of volunteers is an asset for a foundation, which can be leveraged many different ways to improve public schools,” Caruthers said.

NATIONAL STUDY OF EDUCATION FOUNDATIONS TOP 20 IN THE NATION IN SUPPORTING PUBLIC EDUCATION CY-FAIR EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION RANKS NUMBER 15 A recent national study of education foundations and funds in the 50 largest school districts ranks the Top 20 education foundations/ funds in the nation is supporting public education. Duplicating the same study done in 2005, this year’s study used school year 2009-2010 data (most recent year available) from the Form 990 (page one) that non-profits use to report financial information. It also assessed and compared most of the same performance categories as the 2005 study. First, the study analyzes the effectiveness of an education fund/ foundation at generating and sustaining financial resources to serve the students of its school district. “The rationale is that the more financial resources a foundation can generate the more services and programs it can provide to enhance the public school experience for students,” said Dewey Caruthers, president of Dewey & Associates, a 13-year-old management consulting firm that conducts occasional studies in education, juvenile justice and public health.

Specifically, the recent study compared the following variables: - Long-term financial sustainability (total assets, assets per student, investment income) - Fundraising/revenues (total revenues and revenues per student) - Program expenditures (total program expenses and program expenses per student – both less salaries and benefits) - Volunteers (total volunteers) The overall Top 20 was the collective scoring of all eight performance categories. The foundations that appeared in the Top 20 in the most categories were ranked highest, emphasizing the importance of being well-rounded.

H-E-B SITE VISIT FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD H-E-B site judges visited CFISD as a finalist for the 2012 H-E-B Excellence in Education award. This recognition is designed to honor outstanding public schools. The award will be announced in May and the winning district will receive $100,000. In addition to visiting two campuses, Cy-Fair High School and Cypress Lakes High School, the judges met with a group representing community members, business partners, volunteers, parents, teachers and students. One of the district’s strengths is its broad base of community support. Those in attendance articulated their confidence in the district in providing a quality education, which has become a longstanding tradition and hallmark of the CyFair community. Our guests witnessed a diverse student population that was engaged in a well-balanced curriculum that includes core subjects, technology, electives and extracurricular activities. Very aware that

CFISD is the third largest district in Texas and the largest “Recognized” district, the judges saw first-hand how a community pulls together and works with dedicated staff members to ensure student success in a climate of financial challenges. The award announcement is important, but more impressive is the ownership those of us who live and work in Cy-Fair take in our school district. This is what sets us apart from other districts.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through APRIL. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

PURPLE UP! FOR MILITARY KIDS Friday, April 13th April marks the nation’s “Month of the Military Child,” a time to honor youth impacted by deployment. In celebration, Texas Operation: Military Kids (OMK), part of the 4-H Youth Development program of Texas AgriLife Extension, invites you to join us for the 2nd annual Purple Up! For Military Kids. We are encouraging everyone across the state of Texas to wear purple on Friday, April 13th, as a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue. OMK hopes everyone will take this opportunity to appreciate and celebrate these young heroes. Be creative….the goal is for military youth to actually see the support of their community!
