GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a
bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.
SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
At Johnson Dental, we love helping patients of all ages achieve the healthy, beautiful smile they deserve. Our practice is a warm and family-friendly environment with a wide variety of general, cosmetic and restorative services available.

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
REMINDER OF HARRIS COUNTY
BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine.

LABOR DAY FACTS Labor Day will be celebrated by families around the country with picnics, barbecues, road trips and sports events. It is the last blast of the summer vacation season. Labor Day now is a federal holiday and most Government offices, schools and, businesses are closed. Here are some interesting Labor Day Facts. • Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto, but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. • The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches and a picnic. • Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. • On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. • What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce. • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines.

This was the first federal law regulating hours of workers in private companies. • Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day, as it unofficially marked the end of summer. • The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. • Labor Day is the unofficial last day of vacation before the start of the new school year (and mourned by students all over). 1. Make homemade bug repellant: Measure 2/3 cup witch hazel into measuring cup. Add olive or grapeseed oil to make approximately 1 cup of liquid. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, making sure it does not contain sugar. Add 30-40 drops of assorted essential oils (lavender, lemongrass, basil, & rosemary are especially effective). Add 4-5 whole cloves to the liquid. Carefully pour mixture into an empty spray bottle (be sure to carefully label bottle). Shake well before using. Apply liberally to skin to keep bugs away. 2. Wear less blue: Scientists have found that mosquitoes are drawn to darker colors, with blue often cited as one of the worst offenders. So the lighter the color of your clothes, the less likely you are to attract those pesky bugs. Pinning a dryer sheet to your shirt or shorts can also help to protect you; mosquitoes dislike the scent of the sheets. 3. Eat more garlic: Many homeopathic practitioners say that one of the most effective ways to repel mosquitoes and other itchy pests is to eat plenty of garlic. This may or may not be true, but it’s good for lots of other things in your body, so don’t be afraid to embrace the stinky rose. If you don’t want to increase your garlic intake, you can mix 1 part garlic juice with 5 parts water and then dip strips of cotton fabric in the liquid; hang the strips strategically through parts of your home or campsite where insects gather. 4. Use your garden strategically: Mosquitoes and other insects hate a laundry list of plants -lavender, rosemary, basil, geraniums, citronella, lemon balm, eucalyptus, spearmint, & marigolds can all be added to your flowerbeds or garden (especially near doors) to keep your yard naturally bug-free. Mosquitoes also detest catnip, so make your cat happy & bugs unhappy - plant some.
FALL SEASON LAWN CARE Texans across the state continue to enjoy a grilling summer! The heat gave our plants quite the beating but there is hope to refresh and bring back your garden and lawn to life. Here are some tips on preparing yards for autumn: • Fertilize: best way to remember when to fertilize is with the holiday method - St Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and then Thanksgiving, plus a bonus day before Christmas. • Overseed with annual ryegrass: Bermudagrass goes dormant and turns brown in the winter months, so you can overseed it with annual ryegrass. The ryegrass grows and stays green during the cooler months, then dies out once it gets hot - just as your Bermudagrass starts turning green again. • Prevent winter weeds: Stop pesky winter weeds just like you did summer species: Use a pre-emergence herbicide from mid-October to mid-November. • Finish up mowing: Keep mowing your lawn as it slows down during the fall season. Don’t let it get too long as it goes dormant. Courtesy of bhg.com
THE HARDEST WEEKS OF SCHOOL By the time the September issue is in hands, school will be in session. Kids will be getting adjusted to the normal daily routine they are used to for 9-10 months out of the year. Or will they?
September 2015
Village News
The first two weeks of school can be the most difficult - for students, teachers and administration. Here’s why: • New schedule adjustment - sleeping early, waking up early and adhering to a schedule are challenging. • New teachers - equals new classroom policies and procedures, new classroom management techniques, new way of learning, new authority figure. • New classmates - everyone will be seeing some familiar, many new faces. • New grade/learning level - it is intimidating to go to a new grade or even new learning level. It is equally stressful for teachers and administration to adjust to a whole new group of students. • New hopes - everyone will have goals; however, only the most dedicated and driven will be able to achieve them. For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
Please contact Angelita Guerrero, Copperhead District Executive (713-756-3389 or email angelita.guerrero@scouting. org) or to go www.copperhead.shac.org to find join a Scouting unit near you.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things.
Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.
• Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Please help support our drive for a cure or a treatment for Kennedy’s Disease aka Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. Last year, you allowed us to write a $32,000 check to the KDA, thank you so much. The 5th Annual KDA Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, September 26th at Cypress Lakes Golf Course, 18700 Cypresswood Drive, Cypress, Texas 77429. With your continued help and generous support, maybe we can reach our goal this year of breaching $100K (we are at $90K) No donation is too small - and all are greatly appreciated! Kennedy’s Disease is a rare and currently incurable and non-treatable X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuro-muscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps, as well as other symptoms. Please go to www.kdgolfscramble.com and sign up to golf at the prestigious Cypress Lakes GC. If you can’t attend, you can still sponsor a hole for $100 (silver), $300 (Gold) or $750 (platinum). All levels will give you a professionally done sign, with your name and sponsorship. The Platinum & Gold also gives you green fees & free raffle tickets. Hole sponsorships & donations are tax deductible. Shotgun start is 8 AM and registration starts at 6:45 AM, I will be there for the BBQ lunch & auction at 12 PM. All money collected goes to Kennedy’s Disease research for a treatment or cure. I’d sure like to see you there; maybe we can get a few minutes to catch up. The KDA is a 501(c)3 Organization - for more information, please go to www.kennedysdisease.org.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
