LAKES ON ELDRIDGE DOLPHINS 17TH SEASON

The Lakes on Eldridge Dolphins Swim Team will begin their 17th season in 2016! We are again recruiting enthusiastic swimmers ages 5-18 looking to have fun this spring and summer. (Swimmers should be able to swim the length of the pool by the end of the second week of practice.) We are excited to welcome back our head coach, Amanda Chow and assistant coach, Blair Thoman, who led the team to a Divisional victory last season! LOEST is a voluntary recreational swim team operated for Lakes on Eldridge and surrounding neighborhoods. LOEST encourages a competitive swim team environment and provides the opportunity for growth, training, enjoyment, good sportsmanship and participation to all active team members. LOEST cannot function without parent involvement, so each participating family is required to fulfill a volunteer commitment. It’s a great way to meet other families and adults in our community. The 2016 practices will be held at the Lakes on Eldridge pool on Monday, Villages at Lakepointe pool on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Lakes on Eldridge North main pool (by the LOEN clubhouse) on Thursday and Friday. SPRING GARAGE SALE

The 2016 Spring Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 30th from 8 AM-12 noon. Clean out your closets and get ready!

CAR BREAK INS

Vehicles in VLP are being targeted. Please be sure to park in the garage when possible. Always LOCK your vehicle and remove all valuables. Report any break ins to Officer Glentzer and/or FS Residential.

COYOTES

Please be aware that coyotes and other wild animals may be travelling along the bayou areas and nearby streets when dark. Keep your pets safe by keeping a close eye on them, as well as keeping them leashed at all times.

PARKED CARS IN THE STREETS BE CONSIDERATE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS AND PARK IN YOUR DRIVEWAY!

There have been numerous reports of vehicles being parked in the streets… so many cars and trucks that emergency vehicles, school buses, mail carriers, and waste management trucks cannot get down the streets of VLP. This has become a very dangerous situation, should emergency vehicles need to get through. In addition, it is hazardous to residents walking and biking to navigate through the parked cars when oncoming traffic is present. The trash company has informed us that if they cannot pass through the parked cars, they will not be able to collect the trash. Cars will be checked for the length of time they are parked in the streets. Also, if service vehicles cannot get down the street due to obstruction by your vehicle, you could be held responsible.

SPRING PREPARATIONS

With warmer temperatures, many people will be spending time outdoors, so give your lawn and garden areas a little TLC. Please keep grass mowed, weeds pulled and bushes trimmed, as per VLP’s deed restrictions. In addition, tree removal should be preapproved, as particular trees are required by the original community bylaws.

2

NON-EMERGENCY VS EMERGENCY CALLS

Call 713-221-6000 with non-emergency calls and 911 with emergencies. Non-emergencies include anything suspicious, though non-life threatening.

TREE TRIMMING FOR SAFETY

Many of our trees have grown beautifully and are now well established. However, many of these great trees are now in need of some trimming, as they obstruct roadways, street signs and the sidewalks. School busses and trucks have particular difficulty getting down our roads without driving in the middle of the street and many homeowners complain of not being able to walk on the sidewalks due to low hanging branches. Please be aware that you are responsible for the condition of your tree branches and are the responsible party if someone gets hurt while on your property. Please take a look at your trees to determine if they need attention. There are many companies available (various companies advertise in this newsletter) to trim these trees in order to make it safer for everyone out and about in VLP.

VLP COMMUNITY POOL AND 2016 POOL CARDS

Sweetwater Pools manages the pools at VLP. The pool in Villages at Lakepointe is open Tuesdays-Sundays, 6 AM-10 PM year round for your enjoyment. It is CLOSED on Monday for chemical applications. Please consider the pool rules while visiting the recreational areas. As a reminder, pool parties are not allowed at the pool. In addition, private swim lessons are not allowed at the community pool due to vendor and insurance compliance. A complete list of rules is posted at the pool. ** Pool cards WILL BE updated for the season. Please remember, residences that are behind on HOA dues will not have an active pool card. For other issues with a card or if you need to order another one, please contact Matthew Maier at FSR. If you need to report an issue at the pool, Deputy Glentzer can be reached at 713-471-1882 or dial 911. If there is an issue with the pool itself, Sweetwater’s contact number is 281-988-8480. Together, we can help keep the community in top shape for all residents to enjoy.

There have been multiple complaints regarding animals not being kept on a leash in VLP. Additionally, pet owners have not been picking up after their pets. Please read below regarding laws concerning pets and what can be done if these laws are not followed. This information comes directly from the Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services Website. • Cats and dogs may not run loose or have access to streets or sidewalks in unincorporated Harris County. • All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. • The custodian of every dog or cat is responsible for any behavior of a dog or cat under the provisions of these Regulations. HCPHES VPH and other persons designated by HCPHES VPH have the authority to impound the following: • All stray dogs and cats. • Any animal that has bitten or scratched a person. If you live in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, please call the HCPHES Veterinary Public Health office at 281-999-3191 for the following complaints: • Animal bites. • Dogs or cats that are roaming loose, not confined on a leash or not confined to the owner’s fenced yard. • Roadside vendors selling live animals. • Stray or abandoned animals that are confined on your property.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/ side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free

April 2016

Villages at Lakepointe

zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic was our guest speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart about his experiences as a Navy SEAL and the impact his service in the military had on his life. As a Certified Physician Assistant, Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in medicine and charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, winning attitude and continued commitment to service. Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute to Our Heroes Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to underwrite this event in 2017. Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center were Major General Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1,300 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law. GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Our Girl Scout Cookie sale for 2016 concluded on March 20th. Hope you stocked up, as there will be a long wait before cookie time rolls around again! Many thanks to all our cookie volunteers and to all the troops who participated. We appreciate the support of our friends and neighbors. ! Money earned from the annual Cookie sale funds individual troop activities and supports Council programs and camps. Some of our troops really made their cookie booths special. Members of troop 113035 had a cookie booth on Valentine’s Day and report that they sold 200 boxes in 2 hours. These Girl Scouts really enjoy dressing up. They represented Vietnam at our World Thinking Day event and took part in our cafeteria-size Friendship Circle. The World Thinking Day event drew almost 200 girls (and their leaders). Each troop represented a different country and presented national costumes, music, food and crafts at their booths. They also had some great swaps! Stick on mustaches, crepes and chocolate lollipops that were shaped like the Eiffel tower were featured at the “France” booth. Maracas made from plastic spoons and Easter eggs accompanied Fiesta costumes at the Mexico booth the special collars and headdresses seen at the Egypt booth looked as if they had come from the King Tut exhibit. Beautiful costumes, bright colors and lots of smiling faces made traveling “around the world” as easy as moving around the cafeteria! Our event started off with a flag ceremony and recitation of the Girl Scout Promise and finished up with a Friendship Circle and singing “Make New Friends.” We also collected donations for the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. Our STRIDERS event brought an afternoon of track and field events, with families coming out to cheer on their daughters. Girls jumped rope, ran in individual and relay races, threw softballs and jumped in standing and running events. We also had a few snacks to keep

Horseback riding and rock climbing, kayaking, shopping and eating the results of the Dutch Oven Cook-Off are all part of this exciting weekend. Cadette Troop 16435 reports that they attended the “Be an Upstander” event at the Holocaust Museum. They earned the ‘Science of Happiness” badge and the Interact award towards the “Amaze Journey.” April will be a busy time for our Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts, with activities such as Cadette Weekend, Scouts at SAM and Girl Scout Law Day. Some of these older Girl Scouts will also be participating with adults as delegates to the annual Council Meeting. Daisy Troop 113049 reports that they made “blessing bags” to be handed out to those in need. We are getting close to the end of the school Scouting year, with a Bridging Ceremony planned for May, as troops move on to the next Girl Scout level. Summer brings resident, day and twilight camps and the chance to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends. Some of our troops are also looking forward to the Girl Scout Night Sleepover at the Sugarland Skeeters stadium; they will be taking part in a parade around the stadium, enjoying the game and pitching their tents on the field afterwards! Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Please contact Angelita Guerrero, Copperhead District Executive (713-756-3389 or email angelita.guerrero@scouting.org) or to go www.copperhead. shac.org to find join a Scouting unit near you.

This project will be ongoing for several months so if you would like to donate empty rolls please contact Taunia Berg at 832-2176076. Now is the perfect time to join us and get started on this fabulous journey! If you have a son in the 6th grade or higher that would like to join in the fun and adventure please contact us. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

The Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) will host the 8th Annual Cy-Fair Women’s EXPO at Sterling Country Club at Houston National. We are so excited to share some of the exciting plans we have for our annual expo. Besides giving vendors a place to showcase their products and services, the goal for our expo year is to get the community more involved and show the Cy-Fair area what ABWA and CYFEN is all about. One of the ways we are doing this is to have dynamic round table discussions focusing on health and wellness, communication, relationships and personal finance. Our Keynote speaker will be ACTION 13 CONSUMER Reporter Patricia Lopez who focuses on saving you money through her daily “Stretch Your Dollar” segments on ABC13. You can join Patricia’s presentation at 12 Noon. Vendor registration is now open. We only take 2 business types per category and NO two businesses can be exactly the same. We only have 50 vendor tables available so reserve your spot now! There are also a very limited number of sponsorship opportunities still available. For more information about the Expo or about CYFEN, please go to CYFEN.org or email expovendor@cyfen.org.
