vendor and insurance compliance. A complete list of rules is posted at the pool.

Owners can also email questions and/or requests to contactus.tx@ fsresidential.com.

** Pool cards have been updated for the season. Please remember, residences that are behind on HOA dues will not have an active pool card. For other issues with a card or if you need to order another one, please contact Kris Bradshaw at FSR. If you need to report an issue at the pool, Deputy Glentzer can be reached at 713-471-1882 or dial 911. If there is an issue with the pool itself, Sweetwater’s contact number is 281-988-8480. Together, we can help keep the community in top shape for all residents to enjoy.

Additional agents have been added to the call center to improve hold times when residents call in. Response times to calls will continue to be a priority.

TREE TRIMMING FOR SAFETY

As VLP approaches its nearly 16th birthday, many of our trees have grown beautifully and are now well established. However, many of these great trees are now in need of some trimming, as they obstruct roadways, street signs and the sidewalks. School busses and trucks have difficulty getting up and down Sagewood Bend without driving in the middle of the street and many homeowners complain of not being able to walk on the sidewalks due to low hanging branches. Please be aware that you are responsible for the condition of your tree branches and are the responsible party if someone gets hurt while on your property. Please take a look at your trees to determine if they need attention. There are many companies available to trim these trees in order to make it safer for everyone out and about in VLP.

VLP COMMUNITY POOL

Sweetwater Pools manages the pools at VLP. The pool in Villages at Lakepointe is open Tuesdays-Sundays, 6 AM-10 PM year round for your enjoyment. It is CLOSED on Monday for chemical applications. Please consider the pool rules while visiting the recreational areas. As a reminder, pool parties are not allowed at the pool. In addition, private swim lessons are not allowed at the community pool due to

NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES ON THE GREENBELT

Please note that motorized vehicles, including 4 wheelers and dirt bikes, should be not used on the greenbelt areas. This is a common area for all residents to enjoy and safety is an issue.

VLP SAFETY TIPS

Please be sure to follow these tips to safeguard your homes: • Activate your alarm when leaving • Lock all windows and doors before leaving • Place a lock on your gate so would be burglars do not have access to your backyard • Check into updating and upgrading your alarm system and test it for accuracy • Place alarm signs/stickers in visible places • Make sure each of your vehicles has a VLP sticker displayed • Get to know your neighbors and become familiar with their vehicles - notice cars that seem suspicious • Contact our very own Deputy Glentzer at 713-471-1882 if you will be away so he can keep an eye on your home

COMMUNICATION AND VLP

Many residents have reported not receiving the eblasts and/ or notices sent out by FirstService Residential. Please send your contact information, including your current email, to kris.bradshaw@ fsresidential.com. Be sure to update your information should it change. In addition, check your spam folder and add FSR Community Manager to your contacts. In addition, a permanent message board is in the works for placement near the pool/community center! It will display pertinent information for VLP and its residents so everyone can be informed as to what important events are approaching. However, the best way to stay informed of everything going on, to make suggestions and to have all your questions answered is to attend the monthly Board meetings. We are pleased to see many new faces at recent meetings and encourage your support! The meetings are held the first Monday evening of each month (except on Holidays). You should be receiving a notice from FSR of the details the Friday before the meeting.

LEASH YOUR PET - IT IS THE LAW

There have been multiple complaints regarding animals not being kept on a leash in VLP. Additionally, pet owners have not been picking up after their pets. This information comes directly from the Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services Website. • Cats and dogs may not run loose or have access to streets or sidewalks in unincorporated Harris County. • All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. • The custodian of every dog or cat is responsible for any behavior of a dog or cat under the provisions of these Regulations.

And of course, the original VLP website, www.villagesatlakepointe.net is available for residents as well. Events, important announcements and minutes from monthly meetings are posted here. In addition, you will find contact information for FirstService Residential, your Board of Directors, local schools and even utilities listed here. This is also where you report streetlights that are out. It is quite a reference for many of your needs. Please contact FirstService Residential at 713-932-1122 for assistance in logging on. Additionally, please note that this is a community site and no particular individual or group manages the site. If you have questions regarding records or have specific issues with something that needs immediate attention, please call FirstService Residential personally.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

While we all love home improvements, please be sure to obtain approval prior to beginning. A complete list of the deed restrictions can be found on the website, as well as through FirstService Residential. These items are mandatory, meaning all residents must abide by them. Things such as landscaping, painting or staining, adding iron driveway fences, mailboxes, storm doors and additions such as sheds, gates or pergolas are on the list. The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions at all times and it is taken very seriously. Forms for ARC Committee approval are on the website. Some simple things that help keep our neighborhood beautiful are: • Keeping your grass cut regularly, bushes trimmed and beds free of weeds • Keeping tree limbs trimmed high enough so that people walking do not get hurt and street signs can be easily seen • Replacing dead shrubbery - required along street facing fencing • Keeping fences stained with the approved colors: Behr Exterior Wood Stain in Terra Cotta (DP-396), Cappuccino Solid (DP-529) and Valise Solid (SC-123). Please note that FirstService Residential will be to residents that are non-compliant. These deed mandatory, not a choice! GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.

4

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and

the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

BOY SCOUTS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

8

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. Guests are always welcome to visit and attend our Troop Meetings. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. Troop 573 also provides support for the Cy-Fair Community by participating in Service Projects that are organized and executed by Scouts earning their Eagle Rank. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

5TH ANNUAL KENNEDY’S DISEASE GOLF SCRAMBLE

Please help support our drive for a cure or a treatment for Kennedy’s Disease aka Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. Last year, you allowed us to write a $32,000 check to the KDA, thank you so much. The 5th Annual KDA Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, September 26th at Cypress Lakes Golf Course, 18700 Cypresswood Drive, Cypress, Texas 77429. With your continued help and generous support, maybe we can reach our goal this year of breaching $100K (we are at $90K) No donation is too small - and all are greatly appreciated! Kennedy’s Disease is a rare and currently incurable and non-treatable X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuro-muscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps, as well as other symptoms. Please go to www.kdgolfscramble.com and sign up to golf at the prestigious Cypress Lakes GC. If you can’t attend, you can still sponsor a hole for $100 (silver), $300 (Gold) or $750 (platinum). All levels will give you a professionally done sign, with your name and sponsorship. The Platinum & Gold also gives you green fees & free raffle tickets. Hole sponsorships & donations are tax deductible. Shotgun start is 8 AM and registration starts at 6:45 AM, I will be there for the BBQ lunch & auction at 12 PM. All money collected goes to Kennedy’s Disease research for a treatment or cure. I’d sure like to see you there; maybe we can get a few minutes to catch up. The KDA is a 501(c)3 Organization - for more information, please go to www.kennedysdisease.org.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER ASKS AUDIENCES, ‘WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?’ IN 2015-2016

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history. October 16-November 8, 2015: “Into the Woods” The fairy tale classics of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved into an original, charming, musical tale of a couple’s journey to break a wicked witch’s curse. Will the baker and his wife be able to break the witch’s spell? November 27-December 20, 2015: “It’s a Wonderful Life” George Bailey spends his life giving up big dreams on behalf of his community. Overwhelmed by family obligations, George uncovers an opportunity to save his town but a mistake finds himself in a disparaging situation. George’s guardian angel, Clarence, who hasn’t earned his wings, takes George on a journey to discover his “wonderful life.” All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

PET CPR

Hopefully, you’ll never have to use this knowledge, but if you happen upon a pet emergency, you’ll be glad you have it - because it just might save your pet’s life. The American Red Cross has been teaching pet CPR for quite some time. Their techniques are easy for pet owners to remember - just follow these simple ABCs: A is for Airway. You need to be sure your pet isn’t choking on something. Carefully open your dog or cat’s muzzle and make sure there’s nothing restricting airflow, but do not put your fingers in your pet’s mouth if he is still conscious. A frightened pet may bite. If you do see something, try to remove it with pliers or tweezers. If it is lodged too deep you can try to dislodge it using quick firm pressure (with both hands) on both sides of your pet’s rib cage. You can also place your pet on its side and strike the side of the rib cage firmly with the palm of your hands. Do this three or four times and repeat until the object is dislodged. B is for Breathing. If your pet is not choking, assist with breathing. If you have a cat or a small dog, enclose his entire muzzle (mouth and nose) in your mouth. If you have a large dog, hold his mouth closed and put your mouth over his nose. Exhale. Your goal is to get your pet’s chest to expand. After several of these “rescue” breaths, move on to the next step.

The key to pet CPR is keeping calm. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt to be prepared. Luckily, the American Red Cross offers pet CPR training and you can try these methods beforehand on dog and cat mannequins. To get registered for a class, visit the Red Cross website and locate your local chapter. By Katie May, http://shine.yahoo.com/event/pets/pet-cpr-1889869/

C is for circulation and chest compressions. Feel for your pet’s heartbeat (where the left elbow touches the chest). If you don’t feel a heartbeat, perform chest compressions. For cats or small dogs (under 30 lbs), place a hand on each side of the ribs where your pet’s elbows touch his chest and squeeze in rabid succession. For medium or large dogs, cup one hand over the other and place it at the widest part of the chest - then compress rapidly - pressing down 1-3 inches, depending on the size of your dog. Alternate between rescue breaths and chest compressions, small animals need one breath for every five chest compressions. For large dogs, give one breath for every ten chest compressions, ensuring your pet is getting 20 - 30 breaths per minute.
