GRANDPARENTS DAY SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH

This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents. • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate

enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Parents, churches, schools and senior organizations, help children to adopt a grandparent! Source: www.grandparents-day.com

NEIGHBORLY REMINDER

This is a beautiful community. In helping to keep it that way, it would be great to remind people that they should clean up after their pets. It is great for people to have pets and love their pets, but being a good neighbor is also important. We can’t tell you how bad it feels to put work and money into your yard so that you and your family can enjoy it and play in it... but then you find that other people have left disgusting feces on your yard - for you to find and clean up! It is simply not fair. Please be courteous and clean up after your pets!

HOME IMPROVEMENT – ACC APPLICATION

QUALITY PLUMBING

281-855-3764 * Weekends & Holidays Extra

You will find an ACC form at www.crest-management.com or you may contact Sam Simmons at Crest Management at 281-579-0761, ext. 630 for more details.

• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR SAVING

The Architectural Control Committee would like to remind you that approval is needed before you begin an exterior project or change to your home. This includes exterior painting, new roofs, fences, pools, basketball goals, etc. With your completed ACC form, please note what is needed for your type of improvement such as, photos, paint samples, solar screen samples, drawings, brochure, lot survey and your signature. If these items are not submitted with your application, your request is denied and returned to you for completion. Please read the application carefully. • A lot survey is an architectural drawing of your property showing your home, easements and building lines. A copy usually comes with your closing papers. • Please show on the survey in a distinguishable color, other than black ink, the location of your project. • Faxed pictures come across as a solid black picture, so please mail or email pictures. Faxed pictures cannot be used. You will be notified by letter after the ACC committee has made a decision. They have at least 30 days to review and respond to your application.

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug.

Villages of Cypress Lakes

Submitted by: Cheryl Borbey Are you doing your best to save for your future? It can be very challenging to begin a savings program. After necessities such as food, clothing and housing, there can be little left to put aside for future goals. Unfortunately, failing to save could mean the difference between enjoying a comfortable retirement and giving up some basic needs. Often it is a matter of making the decision to begin saving now in order to buy a new home or car later. The goals you set are important to you. Making changes to prepare for those goals can make a difference. • Don’t splurge with your tax refund. Instead of spending your refund, use it wisely by paying down debt, funding an individual retirement account or saving it for future financial goals.

Family Owned & Operated

• Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement contributions. Your employer may match a percentage of the contributions you make to your retirement savings plan. It’s a good idea to do what it takes to get the matching limit. It’s free money that can really help your bottom line during retirement. • Start small and stay steady. The first word is the most important - start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most out of your savings plan. • Pay yourself first. Think of your savings or investments as a bill you must pay on a regular basis, much the same as a car or mortgage payment. Be disciplined and make the payments according to a set schedule. For better results, establish an automatic monthly deduction from your paycheck or checking account to fund an investment or savings account. • Create separate pots of savings for upcoming life stages. Retirement may be an important goal for which to begin saving, but other goals or events need as much or more preparation. Don’t short-change other goals while concentrating on one thing. Whether it’s a home, car or child’s education, it is important to give appropriate attention to each. • If you have children, find the right education plan. You have a number of choices when it comes to saving for a child’s education. Finding the one that makes sense for your situation takes planning and information. This takes us to the seventh and, quite possibly, the most important point… • Work with someone you know and trust. Everyone’s needs and goals are unique. Just as you go through many changes during your lifetime, your financial goals may change. You should work with a professional who not only know about various plans and strategies, but knows you and will stay with you through the long haul. Most people feel the best guidance they receive comes from a financial professional they know and trust. In the end, it all boils down to making a plan, getting started and saying the course. When you make the decision to finally start, contact a financial professional who knows you and understands your needs.

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of allencompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2015 September 4-27, 2015: “Lend Me a Tenor” Set in the 1930s, hysterical chaos on a truly operatic level ensues when a world-famous tenor presumably goes missing on the biggest night in the Cleveland Grand Opera’s history.

Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

The Flory Team’s Realtor® Tips to Beat the Heat without the A/C

COOL OVER PRESSURE

Wrap a damp cloth around your wrists, neck and feet. Keeping these pressure point areas cool actually brings your overall body temperature down!

BEDTIME CHILLS

Try using a damp (not soaking wet) sheet as your primary blanket. This technique was used by ancient Egyptians as a night-time cooling technique.

ICE, ICE BABY!

By freezing your bottled water, you can instantly cool your body by holding it to your skin then, once it melts, hydrate yourself with the melted water!

SUMMER BREEZE

Make yourself feel fine by adding ice to a large tub and using a standing fan to create your own personal A/C. This method is much more cost effective.
