GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/ side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin

and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!! HISTORY OF EARTH DAY

Earth Day, April 22nd, each year marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest “to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda.” “It was a gamble,” he recalls, “but it worked.” At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. Earth Day 1970 turned that all around. On April 22 , 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife, suddenly realized they shared common values. nd

As the millennium approached, Hayes agreed to spearhead another campaign, this time focused on global warming and a push for clean energy. Earth Day 2000 combined the big-picture feistiness of the first Earth Day with the international grassroots activism of Earth Day 1990. For 2000, Earth Day had the Internet to help link activists around the world. By the time Earth Day rolled around, 5,000 environmental groups around the world were on board, reaching out to hundreds of millions of people in a record 184 countries. Events varied: A talking drum chain traveled from village to village in Gabon, Africa, for example, while hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., USA. Earth Day 2000 sent the message loud and clear that citizens the world ‘round wanted quick and decisive action on clean energy. Now, the fight for a clean environment continues. We invite you to be a part of this history and a part of Earth Day. Discover energy you didn’t even know you had. Feel it rumble through the grass roots under your feet and the technology at your fingertips. Channel it into building a clean, healthy, diverse world for generations to come. www.earthday.net.

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts. Sen. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to civilians in the United States for his role as Earth Day founder. As 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another big campaign. This time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting the status of environmental issues on to the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

TIN CAN HERB POTS Difficulty: Very Easy Age: 6 and up Celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd by making these charming herb pots made out of a tin can and watch them grow all summer long! This project not only recycles, it creates new life. Your child can watch her plants grow for months to come and be proud that they created the container that holds them. What you›ll need: Empty aluminum can Screwdriver and hammer Liquid gesso (recommended: Liquitex Basics Gesso) Acrylic craft paints in colors of your choice Acrylic sealer spray, matte finish Craft stick Thin cardboard Pinking shears Black permanent marker 5-10 small rocks, stones or pebbles 1.5 cups potting soil 4-inch potted herb plant White craft glue Water Flower stickers (optional) How to make it: Completely wash and dry aluminum can. If necessary, sand off any rough edges from opening of can. Turn can upside down. Parent should use screwdriver or other pointed object to poke holes in the bottom of the can. Use a hammer to tap the end of the screwdriver to make the holes. Paint outside of can with one coat of gesso. Let dry completely. Paint can in the desired color, repeat coats if needed. Decorate however you like. Use a thin paintbrush for longer lines, dip the end of the paint brush into paint for polka dots. Decorate with stickers if desired. In a well-ventilated area, spray the outside of the completed can with acrylic sealer spray and let dry. Once completely dry, place enough rocks or pebbles in the bottom of the can to form a single layer. Add enough potting soil to fill the can two-thirds full. Remove potted herb from its container and transplant into the can. Fill edges with remaining potting soil and gently pat down so that plant is firmly in the can but not compacted so much that it’s too tight. Place can on a plate (to catch any water drainage) and add some water to the newly planted herbs.

PAPER PLATE BUNNY

This is a good Easter craft for younger children! The materials are probably around the house and smaller kids can easily glue the pieces together. You will need: a large paper plate, a small paper plate, glue, pink construction paper, cotton balls and crayons or markers. Using paper plates, glue small plate to the top of large one to form head and body. Cut out bunny ears from pink paper, then glue or staple to the head. Draw eyes and a nose on the face of the plate with crayons or markers. The final step is gluing a cotton ball on the back for a tail.

CREATING AN EASTER BASKET FOR ADULTS

Who said that Easter baskets were just for kids? Here are ten great gifts that would make the perfect Easter basket for adults. Expensive Gift - When it comes to buying an expensive gift for an Easter basket for adults, choose something like an MP3 player, a new cell phone or even a DVD box set. Choose something fun.
Solid Chocolate Bunny - All Easter baskets should include a chocolate bunny, but an adult basket should include a chocolate bunny that has a more adult taste, like Godiva. Peeps - Peeps are such a great Easter treat and they are something that most adults remember from their childhood. Peeps make such a great gift because they remind people of their youth.
Jelly Belly Jelly-Beans - Jelly-beans are a must when it comes to Easter baskets. But again, adults want treats that have a more adult taste, that’s why Jelly Belly’s make a great addition to their Easter basket. There are so many flavors to choose from. You could either include an assortment or buy one flavor that you know they will love.

Personalized M&M’s - This is such a great gift and it makes a wonderful addition to an adult Easter basket. You get to choose two colors and a message for each color. This is a wonderful choice if you plan on doing several Easter baskets because you have to buy at least 4 bags.

to an adult Easter basket is a new Bible. You could either include a full-sized Bible or a pocket-sized Bible. You could even include an electronic Bible. Jewelry - A cross necklace or ring would make a wonderful addition to an adult Easter basket. This is just another way to help people remember the true meaning of the holiday. Cross Key Chain - This gift reminds people that Easter is more than just a time to eat jelly-beans and chocolate. A cross key chain is also a gift that will help people remember what’s really important all year round.
Gift Certificate - A gift certificate to a nice restaurant is a great gift for an adult Easter basket. Some people may not have the time to fix a dinner on Easter. This way they can still enjoy a wonderful Easter dinner, but without all the work. Special Note - The most important part is to include a message that tells that person how special they are and that you hope that they have a wonderful holiday. www.associatedcontent.com

A New Bible - Easter is more than cute bunnies and dyed eggs. Easter is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A perfect addition
