WEST MEMORIAL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
Are You Ready for Spring?
Are you thinking about pre-emerging weed preparation? Is the lawn equipment serviced and ready to go? Do you have pruning or clipping strategy running through your head? There is still time to plan a garden? In a few short weeks we should emerge into our milder weather. Hopefully that will include some of that needed rain. We all hope it continues to fall. We appreciate the candor of our neighbors. In fact we will encourage any dialog that will help us stay strong. March is a month that can lead to some beautiful greening if we follow our best known schedule. Our local radio Garden Line is one of those good sources of information. I encourage you to look at their approved yard care schedule. A little can go a long way. KTRH-AM 740 radio is just one of those great places for cost saving ideas. In West Memorial, your Directors are already planning to meet the challenges. We have a personal goal of reduction of expenses. Holding the line on cost while finding possible costs savings. Water is a big surprise to all of us. It is beginning to get its share of attention from each of us. For us, as an HOA, it is really getting our attention. The first action is to meet the budget requirements. Then it is explore cost cutting ideas to reduce any abuse, misuse or poorly funded projects. Lawn irrigation is an art and sciences play a great part in keeping expenses to a minimum. Some of our residents will be more knowledgeable about this aspect of a neighborhood challenge. Please keep us in mind and pass on any advice on this subject. The fourth Tuesday of each month we meet at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse Offices. You are welcome to join us during the General session. Personally, I thank each that has come by to give their support and leave us with the information. What is at stake in a neighborhood? Everything as we know it. The majority are hard at work. Then the Directors and Management Company must do their part. The neighborhood will become stronger and hopefully effective in its place in Harris County.
Posting Signs in West Memorial
Posting of signs is prohibited. Posting signs on County Street signs. It can lead to other problems. People can go through training for sign removal. It can get complicated. Try to be responsible with garage sale signs. Do not damage sprinkler heads in the esplanades. Do not post signs on your neighbor’s yard. If you need clarification, call the Management Company at 281-463-1777.

Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place
CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line.
Family Owned & Operated
Free Estimates
CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com. Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

The Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra returns to Katy on Saturday, March 24th, joining with the St. Peter’s United Methodist Church Choir, to present Theodore Dubois’s The Seven Last Words of Christ. The chamber concert begins at 7:30 PM at the church, located at 20775 Kingsland Blvd. The Seven Last Words of Christ provides a musical setting for seven phrases spoken by Jesus Christ while he hung dying on the cross. The phrases, taken from all four Gospels, are often shared in churches during Holy Week to help Christians reflect on the meaning of Good Friday. FBSO will accompany the choir with a smaller chamber orchestra consisting of strings and woodwinds. FBSO is under the direction of Katy resident Dr. Hector Agüero. The St. Peter’s choir is under the direction of David Galasso. General admission tickets are $10 each in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets, visit www.fbso.org or call 281-276-9642.
Holy Week at Living Word Lutheran Church
Sunday, April 1st - Palm Sunday The Katy community is cordially invited to attend a Lenten Cantata, “Behold the Gift of Love” presented by the Choir of Living Word Lutheran Church. The choir, accompanied by a chamber orchestra, will present the cantata on Sunday, April 1st at the 8:00 am, 9:30 am and 11:00 am services. Following the services, children will be invited to an “instrument petting zoo” where they can see and hear up-close demonstrations of the orchestra instruments. Thursday, April 5th - Maundy Thursday The Maundy Thursday worship service will be held at 7 pm. Friday, April 6th - Good Friday “Journey to the Cross” begins at 10 AM and is an interactive walk through the events of Holy Week for young children and their families. “Stations of the Cross,” a worship service for all ages, will be held at both 3 pm and 7 pm. Sunday, April 8th - Easter Sunday Celebration The Easter Sunday worship services will be held at 8 am, 9:30 am, 11 am and 6 pm. Living Word Lutheran Church is located at 3700 S. Mason Rd. Weʼre here when you need us Having a sick or injured child can be very scary. The last thing you want to do is wait hours in the Emergency Room not knowing if they ’ll be alright. If you or your family member has a non-life-threatening injury or illness, such as an ear infection, cold, fever, cut, bruise, sprain, or even a broken bone, we’re here to see you seven days a week, offering the convenience of a walk-in clinic with the expertise of an emergency room. The center offers in-house X-ray, lab and EKG services to our patients. Our goal is to get patients in and out within an hour.
