WEST MEMORIAL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

In Our neIghbOrhOOd

We are in the beginning of an election period. Candidates’ signs can be posted in your yard for a period before the election date. Our Primaries Combined and General Elections have different purposes. In May, West Memorial has its annual event. May 22nd is the date for this year. May 29th has been set for our Primaries. Posting signs in the neighborhood is restricted and there are many good reasons behind the policy. It is easy to target something. And for some it is easy to break a policy. The question is that a double standard is easy to do. But, let’s look at

into the neighborhood. Our No Soliciting Policy is to discourage door to door selling or peddling goods and services throughout the day and night. If strangers approach your door, respectfully tell them you are not interested and then contact the Constable’s

People might go for that grey area on your property. The posting of signs on county property, including stop signs, is prohibited and posted on the back of the stop, yield or caution sign. Every Tuesday & Thursday!

Recently there has been an increase in residential burglaries throughout our area. Please make your residents aware to report any unusual or suspicious activity immediately to our dispatch at 281-463-6666. Remember, in these instances any delay in reporting suspicious activity could result in one of your neighbors becoming a victim of a crime rather than us apprehending a suspect.

One of the recent trends of the crooks is to knock on a front door and if no one answers then they go around to the back of the home and kick in a door or break a window in order to gain entry. If you are home and someone who you are not familiar with knocks on your door, acknowledge that you are home and inquire as to what they want. If their answer seems questionable call the Police immediately.

STUDENTS & CAMPUSES CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH Throughout the month of February, campuses across Katy ISD celebrated Black History Month with plays, talent shows, history lessons and by inviting special guests to speak to students. These events celebrated the successes and contributions of Black Americans, both present day and past. Among some of the activities included a special weekly reading series at Mayde Creek High School that featured notable contributions of Black Americans during morning announcements. Students at Exley Elementary were treated to a Freedom Train performance that told

the inspirational story about a mother and son and their quest to seek freedom from slavery. Additionally, McDonald Junior High students traveled to Morton Ranch High School for a celebration that included special guests KIAH-TV Weekday Anchor, Mia Gradney, former Katy ISD principal and campus namesake, Roosevelt Alexander and members of the McDonald Junior High Black History Committee. Students also enjoyed a performance by the McDonald Junior High band and a student play that illustrated key milestones in Black History. Morton Ranch High School hosted its 7th annual Black History Program on February 16th. This year’s theme, “HEROES,” paid homage to the student’s heroes within their lives - whether a past or someone within their family that is their constant cheerleader. Student performances ranged from original poetry works, lyrical and hip-hop dances, skits and songs.

GIFTED STUDENTS BECOME ARCHEOLOGISTS DIGGING FOR TREASURE More than 1,300 gifted students from every KISD elementary campuses visited the Katy Outdoor Learning Center over a two-week period to spend a day being archeologists. In budget conscious times, KISD and Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) joined forces to create a fantastic opportunity to put months of class research into practice. Specially prepared archeological pits were an unending source of fascinating artifacts leading students to hypothesize why bones, beads, arrowheads and other items may be discovered. Energetic geo-caching scavenger hunts through the woodlands introduced how archeologists use new technology. Archeology experts volunteered their time and knowledge to take students around the world on a virtual tour of ancient civilizations.

KATY HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS EMPTY BOWLS DINNER Art students at Katy High School recently hosted their annual Empty Bowls Soup Dinner, collecting more than $2,000 for the KCM Food Pantry. Art students made and donated ceramic bowls to the dinner. Attending guests paid $10 to select one of the bowls and were served soup by National Art Honor Society students. After the dinner, the guests took the ceramic bowl home with them to remind them that hunger is present in our community, someone’s bowl is always empty.

Set in 19th century France, this classic and poignant musical, tells the story of Jean Valjean, a strong-hearted man jailed for stealing a loaf of bread. As he struggles to make a new life for himself given his new found freedom, he must grapple with questions of faith, fatherhood and allegiance to the law.
