UPCOMING WESTFIELD CALENDAR EVENTS Holiday Decorating Contest!

It’s back! Six winners of the holiday house and yard decorating contest will each receive a $25 gift certificate. So get busy and spread the holiday spirit by decorating your home and yard. Judging will be Saturday, December 8th and Saturday, December 15th after sundown, so make sure your lights are on. Eight volunteers are needed to drive through the neighborhood in teams to select the winners (if you have never volunteered in the neighborhood before this is a wonderful and easy activity). Please consider giving a few hours. It is a good excuse to get out and look at all the holiday decorations. Contact Rebecca Patton at patton5fam@aol.com or 713-385-9080 to volunteer. Due to publishing deadlines, the winners will be listed in the February 2013 newsletter.

Garbage Cans, Garbage Cans and Recycling Containers, too…

Unfortunately over the past few months, more and more of our neighbors are leaving their garbage containers and recycling containers in their front yards, side yards and driveways. Possibly they do not know it is against deed restrictions to store trashcans and recycling containers any place where they can be seen from the street. These containers should be stored in the garage or back yard. Garbage cans and recycling containers should also be put away promptly after garbage pickup. Bags of grass clippings are also sitting out for several days. They too, are not to be put out until garbage collection day. If your neighbor does not know of the deed restrictions, you might mention it to them. Please be a responsible neighbor and help keep Westfield beautiful.

Happy Holidays! December 2012

StreetLight Outages

Who gets a burned-out streetlight fixed? YOU! There is no person or committee that drives through the neighborhood at night looking for street light outages. If the light on your street is out, it is easy to get it fixed. Call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or go to http://cnp. centerpointenergy.com/outage (website). The only information you need to give them is the street name and the light number, which you can find on the light pole. The lights are usually fixed within 24 to 48 hours. Thanks for helping keep your neighborhood safe. This contact information will be included in the “Important Numbers” section of future newsletters.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign

Another easy way to help keep Westfield beautiful is for our neighbors to help keep the neighborhood clean by promptly removing bandit signs and business notices that are on the mailboxes and street sign poles in our neighborhood. We need the help of all our neighbors to accomplish this clean-up. It is illegal to post signs at our entrances, on government property such as stop signs and street signs and on street light poles. Again, there is no person or committee that drives around looking for signs. If our neighbors would simply take down any signs they see illegally installed by their homes it is a win-win for the neighborhood. If you post a lost pet sign, please remember to remove them in a timely manner. We want owners to find their pets, but do not want tattered, faded signs all over the neighborhood. Don’t forget there are many websites specifically for missing pets. Always make sure your pet is wearing a collar with a tag with contact information. This means inside pets too. They also escape. Consider micro-chipping your pet.

Be a Smart and Safe Homeowner and Practice Fire Safety

• Have your heating system checked before the start of cold weather. • Replace your A/C filters frequently. • Have your fireplace professionally cleaned to prevent the dangerous build-up of creosote. • Change batteries on your fire alarms. • Have a fire extinguisher in your home and, if you already have one, make sure it still works. • Change your dryer vent frequently. • Do NOT use your oven or stove to heat your home. • Use free standing heaters with extreme caution and follow the manufacturer’s directions. • Have a practice fire drill with your family - being prepared saves lives.

NEW MAYDE CREEK MUD CONNECTING WALKING AND BIKING TRAIL TO BE READY SOON

As part of the construction of the Mayde Creek MUD North Park (off of Misty Cove and Daylilly) and the South Park (off of Morton Road), a connecting trail is being constructed between the two parks for the enjoyment of the community. The cement path and security lighting installation should be completed by the time you receive this newsletter. We encourage you to go out and explore the new walking path. It is a great area. A few pointers towards cleanliness, safety and security: • Do not travel the trails at night alone. • Keep your cell phone with you in the event of an emergency. • Keep your pet(s) on a leash and pick-up your pets “poop.” • Report any stray/loose animals, suspicious persons or motor vehicles on the path. • Dispose of trash properly in trash containers so that our parks and trails stay beautiful. We encourage parents to talk to their children, especially pre-teens and young adult children about park and trail etiquette, rules and regulations. These rules will be posted at the parks and at the trailheads. Thank you for your cooperation and we hope you enjoy the new parks and trail.

Management Company

With the management company, there is also a website that provides a good bit of information for homeowners. An owner can go to the website, which is www.spectrumam.com and log in with your address. It will ask you to provide an email address as well. After completing the process, you will receive a password (within 24 hours) that you can use for future logins. This site will give you access to the governing documents for the association as well as a way to pay your assessments online and submit ACC requests for improvements to your property. Another advantage to being registered on the site is that the Board or the management company can send broadcast emails to owners when they need to get information out quickly to the neighborhood. The email addresses will not be provided to any other entity and will only be used for association business. Please register today! If you need to contact Spectrum for any reason:

Deed Restriction Enforcement

Deed restriction violations are recorded on monthly drive by inspections through all sections of Westfield. These are performed by Spectrum Association Management. Homeowners with violations are notified by a series of letters according the Deed Restriction Enforcement Policy. This Policy serves as procedure for Spectrum Association Management to follow. If you receive a letter, don’t take it as an insult or a call to battle. The worst action is to ignore the letter. If you have resolved the problem, need more time or circumstances do not allow you to resolve the problem at this time, notify Spectrum Association Management as per the instructions in the letter. If you wish to report a deed restriction violation in your neighborhood, please complete the form on the web Site.

The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations can often be fraught with dangers to both people and property. If you plan to use fireworks, please do so in such a way that the debris does not find its way onto your neighbor’s roof or their yard or driveway. Exercise extreme caution so that you do not inadvertently set a neighbor’s home on fire. After you have finished with your fireworks display, clean up the mess so that it is not left as an eyesore for the neighbors to clean. Please confine fireworks to reasonable hours. Fireworks after 1 AM are annoying to most of your neighbors. If you have children, please closely supervise them. Each year at New Year’s and in July we read of children maimed or killed by fireworks. If you must use fireworks, exercise sober care and watch your children carefully.

Toxic plants and holiday/winter products: Plants and other items associated with the winter and holiday season can be toxic to your pets. What follows is a general guide. Please consult your veterinarian, animal poison control and the manufacturer for specifics. Remember, the earlier you seek treatment, the better for your pet!

281-250-7940

Please note that some items have special problems. For example, whereas angel hair is usually considered to be of low toxicity, it can irritate eyes, skin and the gastrointestinal tract; the content of Christmas tree preservatives varies and often effects depend upon the amount ingested; styrofoam, small parts from Christmas tree ornaments and toys, as well as tinsel, can cause mechanical obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract; snow flock can cause problems if sprayed into the mouth and inhaled and chocolate, of any type, should never be given to a pet. Antifreeze deserves special mention because even a very small amount can be rapidly fatal to pets. www.avma.org

LOCAL TEACHERS ATTEND TSCA CONVENTION

San Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon.

George Tennison being presented award by Sandra Jones of Alief ISD and committee chair.

Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership. Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.

CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund.

Iva’s Clean & Shine Housecleaning Service Serving all your Home & Office Cleaning Needs

The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.” Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM).

Kimberly Akimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, Through December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

Living Word Lutheran Church MAKES QUILTS FOR KRAUSE CENTER

Each September, the Piecemakers quilting group from Living Word Lutheran Church takes a break from making quilts for Lutheran World Relief to make quilts for the children at The Krause Center in Katy. This year, they presented Tawana Goodwin with twenty quilts. Each child receives a quilt when they arrive at the Center and takes the treasured quilt with them when they leave.

During the rest of the year, the Piecemakers make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These mission quilts go out into the world to provide people in need with the warmth and comfort of a quilt. LWR’s goal in 2013 is to provide 500,000 quilts for people in refugee camps or in areas hit by a natural disaster.

The Piecemakers meet twice a month to tie quilts. The public is welcome; if you can tie a knot they need you! For more information, call the church office at 281-392-2300.
