SKUNKS SPOTTED IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Residents we have some unwanted critters in the neighborhood. We ask your help to keep them out. These are some tips to keep these critters out. Homeowners deal with a variety of pests and nuisance animals. Some of these creatures are loud and some of them are destructive, but no other nuisance animal can create a lasting, pungent odor like a skunk. Skunks are solitary creatures, enjoying a diet of insects and berries; however skunks that have learned about the variety of food near human habitats can become frequent visitors. When given the opportunity, a skunk will scavenge anything edible. If you are having an issue with a skunk around your home, the best method of removal is live trapping. Skunks are not overly suspicious animals, making them relatively easy to trap. Purchase a live trap and place it out in your yard with food for a few days. Do not set the trap. You want the skunk to get used to the idea of the metal device being in its territory. After the introductory period, place some bait inside the set trap and wait. Once the skunk is contained, cover the trap with a tarp for transport. The tarp eliminates the visual stimuli for the animal and also protects against a spray attack. The skunk should be relocated at least five miles away from

the home. Skunks are not inclined to return over long distances to previous den sites. For the sake of the skunk, the relocation area should have a plentiful source of food, water and shelter. If you are having problems with skunks coming near your property here are some helpful tips to keep away skunks yourself. The first thing you can do is remove any potential food sources that the skunk would find appetizing. The most common source of food at your home for the skunk is the garbage can. If you can put these in your garage or your shed, that is the place to put it. If not, then ensure that the lids are securely fastened. If you cannot do this then buy some bungee cord and create a locking mechanism that makes the trashcans hard to take off. Keep in mind that if your garbage is accessible they will come. Just imagine what a nightmare that will be if you take out your garbage and find a skunk there. You may wind up sleeping outside for weeks. If you have a dog or cat, don’t leave their food and water dish outside. This a great source of food to a skunk and they will happily eat the same things that Spot or Tabby eats. Keep these indoors. In the same vein, if you have a bird feeder, make sure that it is not accessible to the skunk at all. This means keeping it up so the skunk can’t push on it or the pole it is on. They don’t need to get into the feeder. They just need to push on it so that food falls that they can eat. You have to stop this. Your garden can be a tasty source of food. Make sure you have a fence up and that the fence is buried at least 12 inches into the ground. Remember that these animals are incredible diggers and so a couple of inches is just not going to do it. A great way to keep them away is with light. Since these animals have such poor eyesight, they prefer it to be as dark as possible. If you have big lights shining outside this can often be deterrent enough. Many people suggest using a motion detector light because it will be more shocking to the skunk, but I think this is a terrible idea. The skunk’s reaction to being startled is to fight with his butt aimed at whatever it fears. I prefer not to provoke the skunk to fire at will. Now motion sensors on your sprinkler system are an entirely different thing to effectively keep skunks away. This is a really good idea. When the sensors detect something moving they will come out shooting water and this will most definitely cause the skunk to run. It is the perfect way to get that skunk out of there. While skunks are omnivores, they do not like everything. A good idea is to make a mixture of jalapeno and cayenne peppers and boil them in about a quart of water for about 20 minutes. Then take the liquid mixture and spray it in high traffic areas where you suspect the skunk is visiting. When that mixture gets on the skunks tongue he or she will go running. You will finally be rid of that horrific beast, hopefully for good. Of course, the common sense way to keep them away is to have a fence up that they cannot enter. If you are able to put a fence around your property that is deep enough into the ground so that it can’t dig underneath you will have great success at keeping the skunk away. Cleaning up pet food and garbage is as important as boarding up the holes around your home. Skunks will not turn away a free meal and will often return to sites where they have previously found food.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

“What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows:

Early AM Drop-Offs Welcome!
While Mildred’s Umbrella’s first show of 2016 has yet to be revealed, there will be several hints posted throughout the fall on its Facebook and Twitter pages, leading up to the show’s announcement on November 20, 2015. The company is encouraging its patrons to follow these clues and guess the show as part of an ongoing social media campaign.

Getting Someone a Musical Instrument for Christmas? Don’t forget the Music Lessons! Piano • Guitar • Bass Guitar • Violin • Viola • Cello • Voice & Drum Lessons All in one location!
Are we the right music school for you? We are less than 4 miles from you, located at 3719 N. Fry Rd. The Conservatory of Music currently teaches over 21,000 private music lessons per year. More music students take lessons at The Conservatory of Music than at any other music school in Katy.
CONSIDER FIVE BENEFITS OF BECOMING A CONSERVATORY STUDENT: 1. Piano, guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, voice and drum lessons in one location. Schedule lessons for different children at the same time - saves hours of driving and waiting. 2. The largest & most qualified teaching faculty in Katy. Between our two locations, in Cinco Ranch and North Katy, we have over 30 instructors, all with either University training or professional performance experience. Our music instructors are dedicated to learning about your personal musical goals and in helping you to achieve them. In addition to their teaching credentials, our instructors have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and dedicated to teaching you the style of music that you want to learn. 3. Open 6 days a week to fit your busy schedule. 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday 4. Free, all inclusive, “optional” recitals so that your family & friends can share in your musical journey. Approximately every May and December, our students have the option of performing in our recitals. Students are not required to perform but many choose to. Parents never have to pay admission or any related fees for these recitals. 5. A comfortable waiting room for parents, so that you can relax or get work done while you wait. Instead of waiting in a music retail store showroom, with all the noise and other distractions, our clients enjoy a spacious, professional waiting room with comfortable chairs and magazines. We also provide observation windows on every door so that you can watch your child’s lesson while you wait, or if you prefer, you can sit in on their lessons at any time.
