HOW TO KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
The New Year has arrived and you have already drawn up your resolutions. Now, how to stick to your plan? STEPS: 1. Put it all on paper. Write your resolutions down and keep them in an accessible place as reminders - tape them to your mirror, write them in a journal or put them on your refrigerator door. 2. Mark your calendar. Set deadlines for yourself to tackle each step toward reaching your goal, one at a time. 3. Start as soon as possible. Go out and purchase the necessary equipment or literature; call now and set up an appointment with your dentist, your doctor, your trainer, your accountant...

4. Find a role model. Is there anyone who has succeeded in fulfilling an ambition like yours? Look to this person as a reminder that it is possible to achieve your goal. 5. Check your progress regularly and give yourself an occasional reward for your efforts. Make sure the reward isn’t contrary to your resolution; celebrate a cigarette-free month with a weekend trip or a new outfit, not with a cigarette! 6. Inform friends and family of your goals and recruit them to regularly remind and support you in your endeavors. TIPS: • Don’t sweat the setbacks; persistence is the key.
SPRING PLANTING TIPS
As spring comes, bulbs are the first to appear in the garden. Move any mulch away from the bulbs, but leave it nearby so that if a frosty night might threaten, the mulch can be placed over the bulbs for protection. It is important to leave mulch on perennials as long as possible. Once the temperatures are above the freezing point and the perennials are actively growing, the mulch can be removed. Throughout the winter, ornamental grasses add much texture to the winter garden. In the spring it is essential to cut down the ornamental grass to about 6 inches or just above the green growth that starts to grow in the early spring. Be sure not to prune any spring blooming shrubs such as azaleas, spirea or lilacs. If you are really anxious for spring, force a few branches of forsythia or pussy willow for a fresh look indoors! Don’t till the ground when it’s wet.

oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

KATY ISD STUDENT ATHLETES SIGNED LETTERS OF INTENT
KATY ISD HONORED BY COLLEGE BOARD
Katy ISD is one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that the District is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work. Since 2014, the number of Katy ISD students participating in AP exams increased by 13 percent and more than 7,700 students earned a 3 or higher on these exams. Inclusion on the 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the examination of three years of AP data, from 2013 to 2015, looking across 34 AP Exams, including world language and culture. For more information on the AP District Honor Roll, visit the College Board website, www.collegeboard.com.

Along with a snapshot of the District’s accomplishments and current enrollment growth, Frailey shared with attendees an update on 2014 bond projects, as well as his vision for the future of the District. During the address, Frailey shared some of the District’s major accomplishments, such as being recognized on the College Board AP Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work and increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher, and being recognized as the 57th largest district in the nation. During the 2014-2015 school year, Katy ISD had more than 60 students named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, 85 student athletes that signed letters of intent to
