July 2015
Summertime: the smell of the barbecue, the roar of holiday crowds at events throughout the land, family, picnics and the beach. It’s America’s annual birthday party and everyone is invited.
HISTORY OF INDEPENDENCE DAY
Schoolchildren in America learn the basic history of the events surrounding the Fourth of July, but the details of this monumental occasion in American history somehow fall through the cracks. Although July 4th is celebrated as America’s official split from Britain’s rule and the beginning of the American Revolution, the actual series of events show that the process took far longer than a single day. The original resolution was introduced by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia on June 7, 1776 and called for the Continental Congress to declare the United States free from British rule. Three days later a committee headed by Thomas Jefferson was appointed to prepare an appropriate writing for the occasion. The document that we know as the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on July 4th although the resolution that led to the writing of the Declaration was actually approved two days earlier. All of this had occurred with some of the delegates to the Congress not even present; New York, for example, did not even vote on the resolution until July 9th. Even more interesting is the fact that not a single signature was appended to the Declaration on July 4th. While most of the fifty-six names were in place by early August, one signer, Thomas McKean, did not actually sign the Declaration until 1781. Nevertheless, July 4th was the day singled out to mark the event of the United States establishing itself as a nation. Only four American holidays are still celebrated on their proper calendar days: Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s and Independence Day. Of all the secular holidays, the Fourth of July is the only one whose celebration date resists change. Even in more provincial times, suggestions to alter the day of the festival to the preceding Saturday or the following Monday when July 4th fell on Sunday was protested. The feeling about the sanctity of America’s Independence Day was best expressed in a quotation from the Virginia Gazette on July 18, 1777: “Thus may the 4th of July, that glorious and ever memorable day, be celebrated through America, by the sons of freedom, from age to age till time shall be no more. Amen and Amen.”
FLAG ETIQUETTE
Ideally, an American flag on your house should hang from a staff those angles out from the front wall, a windowsill or balcony. It’s a good idea to screw a bracket made for holding a flagstaff to the trim. Fasten it securely so it won’t become soiled or damaged. Do not allow the flag to touch the ground, floor, water or anything else beneath it. It’s also appropriate to hang the flag from a horizontal staff. Whether the flag hangs from an angled or horizontal staff, be

sure the union or canton (the rectangle with the stars) is at the peak. (Hanging the flag with the union down signals extreme distress.) When our President declares the flag to be flown at half-staff, it is acceptable to hang the flag from a horizontal staff with the union down, though your neighbors may not understand why you’re doing this. When the flag is displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be at the top and to your left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be hung so that the union is on the left when you see it from the street. The American flag is meant to be a flag; don’t use it for any other purpose. For example, don’t use it as drapery, ceiling decoration or as a bedspread. And never use it as a receptacle for carrying or holding anything. Though it is customary to fly the flag from sunrise to sunset, the U.S. Code says that “when a patriotic effect is desired,” you can display it around the clock. If you do, you should illuminate it with a light. When displayed from a car, the flagstaff should be fixed or clamped firmly to the vehicle, ideally on the right side. The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides or back. The same holds true for a flag displayed on a float in a parade. Don’t carry the flag flat or horizontally. And, because it is not meant to be apparel, do not wear a United States flag. If you wear a lapel flag, pin it on the left side, near your heart.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS FOURTH OF JULY
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many people were treated in U.S. emergency departments for fireworksrelated injuries. The U.S. National Fire Protection Association and CDC strongly recommend that fireworks be used only by professionals.
Appropriate USA flag folding procedure: Basically, fold the flag in half width-wise twice. Fold up a triangle, starting at the striped end... and repeat... until only the end of the union is exposed. Then fold down the square into a triangle and tuck inside the folds. Why bother with flag etiquette when you’re excited about flying the Stars and Stripes? Consider this - for more than two hundred years, our country’s military, firemen, police and other service personnel have practiced these measures faithfully, treating our flag with the highest esteem. This is one way we can show respect and meet the high standard they have set.
When do these injuries happen? Typically, 60% of injuries from fireworks in the United States occur in the month surrounding the July 4th when used carelessly by the public.
The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on: New Year’s Day, January 1st Inauguration Day, January 20th Lincoln’s Birthday, February 12th
Who is likely to be injured? During the month around Independence Day (July 4th), children 14 years and younger sustained about 45% of injuries related to fireworks.
Westfield Community
What types of fireworks cause injuries? Between June and July, firecrackers, sparklers and rockets accounted for most of the injuries seen in emergency departments. Sparklers were associated with over half of the estimated injuries among children under 5 years in years past.

What kinds of injuries occur? Injuries from fireworks most often affect the hands, eyes and the head, face and ear. Under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, the federal government banned the sale of the largest and most dangerous fireworks to consumers. Some states have banned the general public’s use of fireworks altogether. More than one third of the fireworks-related deaths involved professional devices that were illegally sold to consumers (CPSC 2006). The safest way to prevent fireworks-related injuries is to leave fireworks displays to trained professionals. Parents, please take this information into consideration; if you choose to participate in fireworks, please make sure to supervise all activities with your children including teenagers. Also please pick up any garbage left behind from the fireworks.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
