SCHOOL’S IN - DRIVE CAREFULLY Now that school is in session again, drivers might need to remind themselves to watch out for children near bus stops or schools. Remember that the speed limit is 20 mph in most school zones. Keep the following in mind when schools are open: • Drive with your headlights on to be more visible. • Look for clues indicating that children might be in the area (for example, school safety patrols, adult crossing guards, bicycles, school buses or playgrounds). • Watch for school buses flashing their lights, which mean that students are entering or exiting the bus. Generally, drivers approaching the bus from either direction must come to a complete stop. Slow down and use extra caution whenever you drive near a school bus or school bus - loading zone. • Parents caution your children to be careful and stay away of afterschool fighting. STREETLIGHTS With our children going back to school we ask that if you see any streetlights out that you help by reporting them. We pay for the streetlights whether they work or not, so if a light is out in your area please report it by calling 713-207-2222. Please have the pole number and street location ready when you call.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

CHILD ABUSE & NEGLECT REPORTS
The start of the school year can be a new and exciting time for children, but it can lead to more reports of abuse and neglect as faculty, staff and other parents notice signs of maltreatment children may have suffered during the break. Teachers and school officials are mandated reporters, so it is not unusual for there to be a spike in reports when school resumes. The increase in reports often leads to more children entering the overburdened child welfare system, creating a need for more CASA volunteers to speak up for these children.
• TREE TRIMMING • TREE PRUNING • TREE REMOVAL • STUMP GRINDING • TREE PLANTING
CASA volunteers get to know these children individually and gather information about their unique physical, emotional and educational needs. They relay their recommendations to the court in an effort to help these children move out of the temporary system and into safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible.
• HARDSCAPES
Child Advocates of Fort Bend needs more compassionate, dedicated volunteers to speak up for these vulnerable children. Please consider being a voice for children in need by becoming a CASA volunteer. For more information, visit www.cafb.org and www.BecomeACASA. org.
Westfield Community
Appointment or Walk-Ins Welcome
GREEN LEAF TREE SERVICE
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers are everyday members of the community that are specially trained and appointed by judges to advocate for children’s best interests in court. These volunteers are appointed to one child or sibling group and speak to any and all relevant contacts in their lives, such as teachers, foster parents and therapists.
In Fort Bend County there have been 220 children in the child welfare system this year. Child Advocates of Fort Bend has served 100% of the children, but we’ve seen a 30% increase of children coming into care this year alone, a number that is likely to grow now that the school has begun.

RECIPES CAJUN CHICKEN AND SAUSAGE GUMBO
You could make this on National Gumbo Day October 12th! INGREDIENTS 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 large onion, chopped 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 pound andouille or smoked sausage, sliced 1/4 inch thick 4 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste Creole seasoning to taste 6 cups chicken broth 1 bay leaf 1 rotisserie chicken, boned and shredded DIRECTIONS Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When hot, whisk in flour. Continue whisking until the roux has cooked to the color of chocolate milk, 8 to 10 minutes. Be careful not to burn the roux. If you see black specks in the mixture, start over. Stir onion, bell pepper, celery and sausage into the roux; cook 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook another 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and Creole seasoning; blend thoroughly. Pour in the chicken broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chicken and simmer 1 hour more. Skim off any foam that floats to the top during the last hour. http://allrecipes.com/ Submitted by Yoyo78
