A Note from the WestgAte resideNt hoA BoArd memBer

If you haven’t yet paid your Westgate fees for 2012, be sure to call VanMor (832-593-7300) to discuss payment before extra fees are tacked on—from the attorney, interest, etc. $600 can turn into $1,000 very quickly. Even if you don’t think you can pay all at once, you need to call VanMor to make payment arrangements; DON’T WAIT and cost yourself MORE money. Why is it so important to pay your annual dues? Last year, because of our success in cutting costs and collecting fees, Westgate was emergencies. And we have several projects in the works that Westgate desperately needs to pay for to keep up the neighborhood, aside from our normal bills: playground repairs playground resurfacing metal fence painting (especially at the pool) another reserve fund deposit at the end of the year Just these projects will run thousands of dollars and that doesn’t even cover individual requests from residents or costs like forced mows on property that is overgrown and the homeowner hasn’t responded. I’m currently working on plans to encourage prepayment a bit at a time; that way, residents won’t have the burden of one big payment right after Christmas, but Westgate will still have the funds to pay our bills on time (i.e. the beginning of the year). For details, email me at kbmcgaughy@gmail.com. Kimberly McGaughy Westgate HOA board member

receNt WestgAte AccomplishmeNts have about $250,000 to $500,000 in a reserve fund for emergencies and unexpected price increases for essential services (to avoid cancellation of services like street lights etc.). According to VanMor, the HOA board approved $70,000 to be deposited into this account earlier this year, which previously only had about $10,000 in it. We are on our way to securing Westgate’s future!

Also, we are having an announcement board installed at the pool house on Kenmark. This version of the board (not freestanding) was a compromise to save on cost while still getting one more way to keep the neighborhood connected. Check it out! We have started on playground repairs and upkeep and are looking at proposals to paint the metal fences in the neighborhood - especially the one around the pool as it is stripped because of chemicals from the pool and starting to rust. Thank you to the Pool And Parks Committee for help with inspecting the playgrounds and assessing our needs in that area.

Congratulations to the Suleman family of 18031 Redbud Terrace for winning the Yard of the Month for April! What a great yard! On March 7th, a Westgate neighbor had an attempted break in about 11:45 AM on Tupper Bend Lane. She was working in the backyard when she saw a young Hispanic man jump her fence. He didn’t see her, so she was able to get inside and lock the door. He called out hello (in Spanish) before he tried kicking in the door. Unfortunately, this was during the power outage, so her house phone didn’t work and she couldn’t call the police. She started yelling at him and he ran off. By the time she got to a phone and called police - he was long gone. She said that the day before, someone had rung her doorbell twice around the same time as this incident. Maybe it was the same guy seeing if they were home. The sheriff’s deputy told her if someone rings the bell, yell through the door to go away or something, so they know you’re home.

CHO’S TAE KWON DO CENTER Recycling foR chaRity in Westgate

Donna and her son are on a recycling project; everything they collect goes toward funding the Ronald McDonald house which provides family care and lodging for families of children receiving cancer treatment. They can come by on Thursday mornings before 10 AM to pick up recycling from you. They collect paper items, cardboard boxes, glass and cans. You can leave it at your door or at the end of your driveway. Thanks so much for your participation: lidiacody@ yahoo.com. Plastic needs to be separated in a bag and will only be picked up on the last Thursday of the month. They can also pick up large metal items with an email prior to Thursday - such as washer/dryers, BBQ grills etc. Recycling: It creates new jobs, gives new life to materials otherwise Don’t trash it, recycle it!

To get the latest information on what’s happening in Westgate, be sure to check our other Westgate sources: 1.) The Westgate website, www.westgatetx.com (you must register) 2.) The Westgate Facebook page (on Facebook, search for goodies like pictures of the June 25th BBQ party and pictures of the Yard of the Month. 3.) RecommenDeD tRaDespeople list on the Westgate facebook page

Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s List.” All people and businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have had personal experiences with them. To submit a name or business, please email Kimberly McGaughy at kbmcgaughy@gmail.com; you should give your name and address (for proof of Westgate residency only, address will not be published), the name and contact information of the business you’re recommending and a description of the experience you had with this person or company (what work they did, maybe a price range, how you felt about their work, etc.). Thanks for helping out your neighbors with this information! We also have a list for businesses actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who provide Services.” If you are a resident who owns a business, follow the same process, but instead of a description of a personal experience, provide a description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. We’d love to support our neighbors! Support your neighbors by To access the documents, go to www.facebook.com and search for “Westgate Subdivision.” Look at the top of the page under “Docs” and you’ll see them there! And I started the Recommended Tradespeople list off with one recommendation of my own! Add yours to the list.

The newsletter only comes out once a month and information is a month old, so the other methods are used when something happens last minute and if you missed the newsletter. Also, I’ve spoken with residents who say they don’t receive a newsletter; if you know a resident who doesn’t get one, please have them email kbmcgaughy@gmail.com with their name and address and the editor will forward the information to the appropriate person at Krenek Printing.

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc‌ Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through APRIL. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

February 29th, at 11:30 AM at Adam Elementary, 11303 Honeygrove, in Houston. “Our theme for our Christmas Eve offering was ‘Give It All Away’,” says Jerome Brimmage, Senior Pastor at Cypress UMC. “We felt led to give 100% of our Christmas Eve offering to support local and global missions. Locally, that portion of the money is going to Adam.” The track project at Adam has been in the works for eight years, but had stalled due to lack of funding. Cypress UMC “adopted” Adam Elementary in 2011 and has been instrumental in providing backpacks, school supplies and volunteers to help the students and staff at the school. The program has been so successful; other local schools have contacted Cypress UMC, to see if they can be adopted as well.

Iggy the Iguana

Turtle Town

Students will learn how to think outside of the box and create unique characters with interesting stories. The author, Melissa Williams, will discuss the way she used her own experiences with her pets to create the fictional characters in Iggy the Iguana and Turtle Town series while teaching the use of archetypes, conflict resolution and original storyline development tactics. Students will learn how to bring their own ideas to life through words and illustrations as professional illustrator Ryan Shaw explains the process of connecting to the author’s characters with art. During the week, the students will have the opportunity to use their newly learned skills to come up with their own character and develop a unique short story that will be eligible for publication in the “I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids” contest.
