Thanks so much to all the volunteers who made the Patriotic BBQ and Splash Day Party a success! My husband Kent McGaughy, Mike and Nicole Gerrard, Jay and Penny Zaffino, Bill and Dawn Cain Friend and daughter Samantha Friend, Kathryn Rice-Hughes and husband and Tom Rowley. In late June, several residents reported on our group Facebook page that they had tires stolen from the vehicles that sat in their driveways overnight. Westgate Crime Watch had posted on Facebook the day before a warning about residents in other nearby neighborhoods noticing suspicious vehicles driving slowly around, some taking photos and then similar crimes occurring.

As a result of these issues, Westgate Crime Watch held a Town Hall Meeting at the Weekley Community Center on July 30th, with information from the Sheriff Deputies that patrol Westgate. It was announced on our neighborhood Facebook group and our website, a good reason to stay connected that way.

This is not a new problem. Crime happens everywhere, even in much more expensive neighborhoods. Several sheriff deputies that have spoken with Westgate Crime Watch have stated that they consider Westgate a very safe neighborhood, with a very low crime rate compared to other neighborhoods in the area. The best way to combat crime is to know your neighbors and to look out for each other. Joining Westgate Crime Watch is a way to help with that. Also, when you see something suspicious, do not just ignore it; call in to the Sheriff’s Non-Emergency dispatch number (713-221-6000) if you’re not sure how important it is. When in doubt, call. If you notice things like dangerous speeders, suspicious vehicles or behavior, etc., it helps the deputies if you call and report it; that way they know the locations and times problems occur, so they know where and when to patrol more. First, thank you to our Sheriff Deputies who spent a good deal of time in our neighborhood recently working to improve our trafﬁc safety. In one day on Fair Grange and Westgate Park Dr. alone, they wrote in excess of 15 tickets in a short period of time, targeting speeding and running stop signs mostly. It was good to see because residents have reported concerns over speeding, reckless driving such as passing other drivers at a high rate of speed and stop sign running recently. So thanks for the attention from our neighborhood deputies!

Hello Westgaters! With summer in full swing and the changeover to PCMI as our management company over, the Board has been able to make progress on several issues, as well as begin on some new items. In addition to the normal wear-and-tear issues, here are some project updates: • Completed repairs to pool deck and installation of new Cool Deck (to help keep the surface cooler for those bare feet!) • Arranged for replacement of fence along Westgate Park Dr. from Heathridge through Kenmark (including pool), as was originally supposed to be completed • Arranged for staining of ALL of repaired fencing along one side of Forest Heights and both sides of Westgate Park Dr. from Kenmark through Fair Grange • Approved sprinkler system updates from Water Logic that will maximize our water usage, thus saving us a forecasted 40% and making us more environmentally responsible • Approved a reserve study, making sure Westgate stays ﬁnancially stable and responsible

• Looked into becoming a 501(c)3 Non-Profit organization, thus making Westgate a tax-exempt entity and eliminating paying future sales tax • Continued the process of completing more sidewalks • Looked at sample fining policies from other neighborhoods to evaluate their usefulness • Solicited bids for playground equipment for empty lots in neighborhood • Solicited bids for a splash pad We will also soon have a new entrance/exit from the neighborhood out to Longenbaugh. Hopefully, there will be room for some sort of entrance monument there. Regarding our pool, please remember that the lifeguards are the authority; please heed their warnings and pool rules. One clarification that the Board had to make this year is that thongs are NOT considered appropriate swimwear at our family-oriented pool. It may be fine at the beach or your own pool, but we had parents with small children that expressed their concerns. We appreciate our residents keeping this in mind as they take a trip to our neighborhood pool. The Board would like to thank the volunteers who helped pass out pool tags this year, as well as the Social Committee volunteers who helped make our Patriotic Celebration successful. To continue these events, we need more volunteers from our neighborhood. All our lives are busy, but the more volunteers we have, the less each person has to do. CHANGE IN WESTGATE HOA BOARD MEETING LOCATION

Beginning in April, our Board is now going to meet at the new Richard and Meg Weekley Community Center on Greenhouse. This convenient location is literally just around the corner. HOW TO GET POOL TAGS

If you were unable to attend the pool tag registrations, tags will be distributed with a fee through PCMI. Call 281-870-0585. Your assessments must be paid in full in order to receive your pool tags and pool tags will be distributed only to ADULTS 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER. Property ID must be presented to pick up your pool tags. Two tags will be given out per family with a resident and two guests allowed per tag; that’s three people total per tag. This should eliminate the problem of turning people away who want to swim.

WESTGATE POOL SEASON AND HOURS THIS YEAR

Pool opens for the season on Saturday, May 2nd. Open six days a week in June, July and August. Weekends only in September. The pool will be closed for the season on September 27th. Pool hours are 10 AM-9 PM.

PROCEDURE WHEN FILING A REPORT WITH THE SHERIFF’S DEPT.

If you ever have to file a report with the Sheriff’s Department, whether after calling 911 or the nonemergency number (713-221-6000), be sure to let the deputy know that Westgate has a contract with the Sheriff’s Dept. through our MUD district (Harris County MUD #70). Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s List:” “Recommended Tradespeople And Businesses.” All people and businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have had personal experiences with them. We also have a list for businesses actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who provide Services.” If you are a resident who owns a business, provide a description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. Support your neighbors by checking it out; you might find what you need very close to home!

If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

BOARD APPROVES 2015 - 2016 BUDGET

The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees adopted the 2015 - 2016 budget in the amount of $882,957,679 during the regular meeting on June 25th. The budget includes local tax revenues of $455,573,270, state revenues of $378,859,409 and miscellaneous/federal revenues of $48,525,000. The proposed tax rate for 2015 - 2016 of $1.44 - comprised of a $1.04 Maintenance & Operations Tax rate and $.40 Interest & Sinking (I&S) Tax rate - remains unchanged from the 2014 - 2015 school year, which marked a tax rate decrease from 2013 - 2014.

The 2015 - 2016 budget plan provides for: • a starting teacher salary of $51,500; • a salary increase of $2,000 for all classroom teachers; • a 5-percent-of-midpoint salary increase to clerical, hourly support and instructional paraeducator positions; • a 4-percent-of-midpoint salary increase to all other employees; • pay range adjustments and equity increases to certain clerical paraeducator, hourly support, instructional paraeducator and central administration positions; • funding for additional classroom teachers to staff K-4 classrooms at 22:1; • funding for class size reduction at Title 1 campuses; • additional police officers and police vehicles; • additional HVAC technicians, painters, custodians and electricians; • the opening of Woodard Elementary School; • capital outlay purchases; • teachers and other expenses related to student enrollment growth; • funding for FF&E replacement schedule and • an additional 1.5-percent district contribution to the Teachers Retirement System (TRS).

Girl Scouts in Copper Creek Meadows Community have been having a great time at San Jacinto Council’s resident, day and twilight camps! Camp is a wonderful place to meet new friends and share Girl Scout traditions. Sailing at Camp Casa Mare, canoeing and swimming at Camp Agnes Arnold and horseback riding at Camp Misty Meadows are only some of the camp experiences girls in our Council can enjoy. “I can’t wait to get back” was one comment from a ﬁrst time camper. Many of the day and twilight camps this year had a “safari” theme and might have included survival skills, archery, swimming, a cookout and maybe even a sleepover! Camp wouldn’t be camp without songs, crafts and games and special snacks like s’mores and banana boats! Soon it will be time for us to start anew Girl Scout year and also to welcome new Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, conﬁdence and character, who make the world a better place- and we have been doing it for over 100 years! Many things have changed since 1912 - Girl Scouts today are more

likely to be building robots than ironing hair ribbons! - but our core values are strong and enduring. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 17 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scout programs are geared to their particular age levels and interests. Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls! Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Older girls whose schedules do not allow for participation in a troop or group may still want to participate as “Juliettes” (individual Girl Scouts). We have many special interest groups for activities such as backpacking, archery, horseback riding and sailing. Our Council also has several choirs and a dance group, the Green Starlettes. Please be on the lookout for information on Girl Scout Rally nights (when we recruit new leaders and form new troops) and registration at area schools. The San Jacinto Council website should also have information. We are ALWAYS looking for adults to be troop leaders and volunteers. You don’t have to be Superwoman or Ranger Rick - you don’t even have to have children! You do have to be interested in working with girls, pass a background check and go through some training. Lots more training is available, but you only need a little to get started. We also need people with skills and special interests who might be willing to share them with your young neighbors. Sometimes we just need people who are willing to be there and decorate the cafeteria, hand out programs, make popcorn or measure the standing broad jump! We’d love to talk to you about volunteering!

This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center. MAINSTAGE SEASON - 2015 All Shows at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street #101, Houston TX 77007 Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company has been selected for an NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for our upcoming production of the Houston Premiere of The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic. In addition, the company has received a Brown Foundation Discretionary Fund Grant for operations in our upcoming season. These grants are highly competitive and we are proud to have been among the recipients. The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the “Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization. Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years. When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
