CHRISTMAS DECORATION CONTEST
Be sure to have your lights on to be included in the contest!
Just wanted to give a heads-up to all the Westgate residents out there who like to show their holiday spirit! We’re having a Christmas Decoration Contest again this year! Last year I saw so many homes that had enthusiastically decorated their homes and yards; we’d love to see that again this year! Winners not only get bragging rights, but also gift card prizes! The judges will drive around and judge the decorations on: Friday, December 20th and Saturday, December 21st So be sure to have your decoration lights on both those days if you want to participate. Afterward, they’ll announce the winners. The newsletter won’t have the winners in print until the February edition, but we will have it immediately on Facebook (Westgate Subdivision group) and the Westgate Website (www.westgatetx.com).
NEWS FROM THE RESIDENT HOA BOARD MEMBER
Hi Westgaters! • The HOA Board of Directors voted to lower our dues to $550, a level previously unseen since 2004, I’m told. This reduction in dues was possible because our reserve funding goal will have been met by the end of the year (yea!), therefore protecting the financial future of Westgate. We will not see any reduction in service. • KB is leaving Westgate by March because all lots will have been sold. Therefore, we will have our first all-resident HOA Board of Directors after the election at the Annual Homeowners’ Meeting in March. We need a few residents to step forward to run. Reasons why anyone would do this on a volunteer basis - protect your property values by watching over how our money is spent, by creating and furthering quality of life in Westgate and by simply being civic-minded. Neighborhood business is mostly taken care of at once-a-month meetings. Call VanMor to let them know you’re interested - kourtnie@vanmor.com or 832-593-7300.

• At our last Resident Meeting with the HOA, we discussed several important issues, a couple of which are that I’m going to propose to the Board that the HOA pay for initial curb address painting for safety reasons and we’re waiting to decide on two costly items (wood fence staining and adding a splash park) until March so an all resident Board can make that decision. • Our MUD district, Harris County MUD #70 has released details in your water bill about the state of the drought and has requested water conservation from our residents in accordance with state wishes. Currently our restrictions are labeled “Moderate,” with the following specifics: Summary: reduce water usage by 10% and water only between 8 PM & 6 AM. Even-numbered addresses water Sundays and Thursdays; odd-numbered addresses water Saturdays and Tuesdays. For more details, if you’re on Facebook, you can go to www.facebook.com/download/preview/534201423320458 to see the complete document. I’m looking forward to seeing the great decorating our neighborhood always turns out for the holidays! Sincerely, Kimberly McGaughy Westgate HOA Board Member
FIREWORKS AND BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR
The season for fireworks is upon us again. And while fireworks are banned in Westgate, some residents can’t seem to resist the allure since they are legal in Harris County. A couple of points to remember so that everyone can enjoy our time during the holidays: • Fireworks should not be set off in backyards; concrete parking lots are best. • Point fireworks AWAY from houses. Fires occur each year from sparks from fireworks. • Pick up your fireworks trash when you are finished. • Finish fireworks at a reasonable hour; many people have to work the next day. Follow these points and be a good neighbor; that way we can all enjoy the holidays!

WESTGATE’S NEW PET DIRECTORY
Thank you to A.J. Hutchinson for getting us started on a great new idea for Westgate - the Westgate Pet Directory on our Westgate Subdivision Facebook group page. In an effort to reunite lost pets with their owners, upload your pet’s photo. In the event your pet ever gets loose, they can be identified in this photo album and returned to you via the contact info you provide as a description or comment on the photo. Any group member can click on each photo to see that individual pet’s home contact info. For any Westgate group member that wants to add a picture to the directory, please follow these directions (Cannot be done from a phone): 1. Click on tab that says “photos” at the top of page next to the tab that reads events. 2. Select the album that says Westgate Pet Directory. 3. Select “add photo” in the top right hand corner and browse for the photo on your computer. 4. When you add the photo, you can add the contact info as a description or as a comment. Thanks everyone for helping with this and posting your pets we are hoping this helps with finding the homes when our loved ones get out on the loose. When looking for the info., click on an individual photo.

HALLOWEEN PARTY SUCCESS!
Everyone seemed to have a great time at this year’s Halloween Party. We had such fun at the Halloween pizza party and the costumes were FABULOUS! About 400 people turned out for the pizza and Costume Contests with prizes in three age groups: Cutest, Scariest, Most Original (boy and girl award for each) and Best Costume in the oldest group. Each winner received an Award Certificate and prize. The wonderful volunteers made it all possible: Robert & Dora Gonzalez, Travis & Cortney James, Bill & Dawn Friend, Kent (& me) McGaughy, Clyde Kriekenbeek, Christina Carillo... thanks for your generous gifts of time and effort. You made the night for our residents! What generous neighbors working together to make Halloween fun for the kids! And after the party, the party continued as groups of kids trick-or-treated on the way home. Take a look at some of the photos from the party! You can see more on the Westgate Subdivision Facebook group; request to become a member and look for a message from me, requesting your address: www.facebook.com/groups/WestgateSubdivision.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR DEED RESTRICTIONS?
In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate. This month, we are highlighting some basics about maintaining your lawn and garden beds. In the Builders’ Guidelines, Section C, numbers 25 and 30, Lawn Maintenance: “Grass, vegetation and weeds shall be cut…”to maintain “…a neat and attractive condition. Grass growing onto or over sidewalks, driveways and curbs…” is not permitted. Front Yard Planting Beds “may not exceed 25% of the front yard and must be proportionate in appearance…” and “must be maintained… as to not detract from the neighborhood which includes pruning and weeding.” If not providing maintenance, the homeowner will receive a letter with 10 days to correct the problem. Otherwise, the association may “enter upon” the property “to maintain, cut, trim and/or restore” the landscaping and bill the homeowner. Following these instructions helps keep our neighborhood looking neat and thus keeps up our property values. Home condition tends to be a contagious condition-good or bad. Let’s be considerate of our neighbors! Copies of all Westgate founding documents (including the ARC form) can be downloaded from the Westgate website www.westgatetx. com, they are located under the HOA tab.

CRIME WATCH COMMITTEE: David Vaughn, Crime Watch Chair, can be reached at VaughnDavid@ icloud.com. DEED RESTRICTIONS COMMITTEE: For the past few months, I have not received very many concerns regarding possible deed restrictions. This could be a great sign that more and more people are beginning to get the message that it is important to keep up the looks of their property. It could also mean that we are getting a little relaxed in reporting deed restrictions to our property management company. Currently there are 29 residents on the committee, with room for more. If you are interested in being an active set of eyes in the community to assist us with spotting the yards, fences and buildings that need work, please let us know by emailing Tom Rowley at eosfinishline@yahoo.com. We are a community that is growing in the right direction. Property is selling quickly because of the attractiveness of our neighborhoods. Let’s try to keep it that way. You may report possible deed restrictions in two ways. First, you can email Kourtnie at VanMor directly by sending a photo and message to kourtnie@vanmor.com. Or, if you wish to remain anonymous you can email me at the above address. It will be very helpful if you sent a photo of the violation, along with the address of the resident not in compliance. Please take some time to be observant as you drive through your neighborhood. Please remember: Sending in a photo with address and description ONCE is enough. Repeatedly photographing someone’s residence can be considered stalking if you’re doing it over and over again. We’ve had an example of someone sending in photographs several times a week over several weeks. That’s abusive. NEWSLETTER: Do you have information you’d like to put in the newsletter? Would you like to help out by writing brief articles about Westgate? Contact Kimberly McGaughy at kbmcgaughy@gmail.com; help keep our residents informed! POOL AND PARKS COMMITTEE:

We would like to hear from residents about what they want to add to the new park areas this year (Westgate Park drive near Fair Grange and a lot between sections 10 and 12), adding dog waste containers in the KB areas of Westgate (where is best?), lighting in park (gazebo light has been added for security, looking at adding one in the back corner for safety) and entrance landscaping that needs refurbishing. To help decide what we add, email wgparkspools@gmail.com to contribute. Your parks, your neighborhood, your suggestions! SOCIAL COMMITTEE: Have suggestions for an event? Contact wgsocialcommittee@ yahoo.com to help or to contribute ideas for this and other events. YARD OF THE MONTH COMMITTEE: Like most other neighborhoods, we now have our own Yard of the Month committee. This year, for the first time, winners will receive a gift card of $35 - $10 of it was donated by our local Ace Hardware. Thank you so much Mr. O’Malley! Let’s show our appreciation to Ace! We really appreciate residents who keep up the curb appeal of our neighborhood! Yard of the Month will begin again in April. Contact kbmcgaughy@gmail.com if you’d like to help!
RECOMMENDED TRADESPEOPLE LIST ON THE WESTGATE FACEBOOK PAGE
Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s List:” “Recommended Tradespeople And Businesses.” All people and businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have had personal experiences with them. We also have a list for businesses actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who provide Services.” If you are a resident who owns a business, provide a description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. Support your neighbors by checking it out; you might find what you need very close to home! To access the documents, go to www.facebook.com and search for “Westgate Subdivision.” Look at the top of the page under “Files” and you’ll see them there! Add yours to the list!

STAY UP TO DATE WITH WESTGATE NEWS
To get the latest information on what’s happening in Westgate, be sure to check our other Westgate sources: 1. The WESTGATE WEBSITE, www.westgatetx.com (you must register); 2.) NextDoor Westgate.com 3. The Westgate FACEBOOK page (on Facebook, search for “WESTGATE SUBDIVISION” and you must sign up); you can find goodies like pictures of our events. If you have trouble finding it on Facebook, type this into your address bar: www.facebook.com/ groups/WestgateSubdivision/. Within a day or two, you will then be asked to verify your address, as it is a residents’ only group. Look for this in your “messages” section at the top left of the page and look under your “other” folder OR I will “friend” you to be able to send you a message directly. 4. The WESTGATE HOA EMAIL, www.westgateHOA@yahoo.com (send an email to that address to be added to the contact list). The newsletter only comes out once a month and information is a month old, so the other methods are used when something happens last minute and if you missed the newsletter. Also, I’ve spoken with residents who say they don’t receive a newsletter; if you know a resident who doesn’t get one, please have them email kbmcgaughy@gmail.com with their name and address and the editor will forward the information to the appropriate person at Krenek Printing.
STREETLIGHT OUTAGES
Report streetlight outages to Center Point Energy at www. centerpointenergy.com or 713-207-2222. Let’s keep our community safe. You will need the pole number, the black and white numbers listed vertically on the pole, to report the outage. If no pole number is listed, on the website you can use the GIS map listed on the website link above.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

CFISD CELEBRATES 75 YEARS
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was consolidated on Dec. 9, 1939, which means our 75th Anniversary is around the corner. The actual anniversary date is Dec. 9, 2014 and various projects are currently underway to make it a memorable 2014 - 2015 school year. Details are now available on the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/75. The first event of the celebration will be a Diamond Jamboree at the Berry Center in August, 2014. During this event, we will identify 75 honorees and we need your help. The anniversary honoree designation committee is looking for people or families who have significantly impacted the CFISD community and district during the last 75 years. We want to particularly identify those that have truly captured the anniversary philosophy: “Our children. Our schools. Our community.” Please consider submitting a nomination and review the attached application. For more information on the anniversary, email 75th@ cfisd.net. Longenbaugh Hwy 6

some special time together in a variety of camp activities. The talent show and Dutch Oven cookoff are always popular events. Hiking, playing in the river and some time spent shopping in Wimberley helped round out the weekend. November also saw a chance for Girl Scout leaders to visit and learn from each other in a “café” event. Leaders have also been busy taking training classes and learning new skills. Those who attended the Council ETC (Every Thing Covered) may not actually have covered EVERYTHING... but there was certainly a lot to choose from! Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following elementary schools (and their corresponding middle and high schools): Wilson, Metcalf, Lieder, Tipps, Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required.

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS SERVICE UNIT
Copper Creek Meadows Service Unit held a “Taste of Girl Scouting” event in October for new Girl Scouts. The girls attending made beaded bracelets and began to learn the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Older Girl Scouts helped to teach some favorite Girl Scout songs, like “Princess Pat” and “Yogi Bear.” The audience participated in telling a story about Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low Many thanks to all who helped with the event and all who attended! Our Leader/Daughter event took place early in November at Rocky River Ranch in Wimberley. Girls and their leader moms enjoyed

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,

LOWERY ELEMENTARY CUB SCOUT PACK 1445 NEWS
We’re pleased to report that 2013-2014 continues to be a great year for Cub Scout Pack 1445! The Pack has been working hard to maintain the flowerbeds around the Lowery Elementary marquee and once construction is complete around the school, we’ll make sure the other flowerbeds look just as great! In October, the Pack recognized 11 new Scouts who completed the necessary requirements to earn their Bobcat badges. In November, the Scouts helped with the Veterans Day ceremony and activities held to honor the Lowery family members and friends who have served in our country’s armed forces. In December, the boys will participate in the Parade of Lights and have a blast riding on the Pack’s trailer. On December 14th, we will have the honor of participating in the Wreaths Across America’s Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Houston National Cemetery. Looking forward to the (very busy!) new year, the Pack will be holding their annual Pinewood Derby the last weekend in January. We’re excited to announce the Derby will take place at the Texas Tornadoes Training Facility and are grateful to the organization for allowing us to use their building. On President’s Day weekend, the Pack will be traveling to Corpus Christi for a very special camping trip: they’ll be spending the night onboard the U.S.S. Lexington! From all of us in Cub Scout Pack 1445, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland, will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
