LETTER FROM THE HOA PRESIDENT
Hello Westgaters! I wanted to touch base with our residents about a few important issues. First, as a result of all the research of the crime watch committee and input from residents concerned about crime, the Board decided to initiate our own contract with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, independent of MUD 70. This contract provides a deputy that answers directly to Westgate and provides a point of contact for Westgate for information from the sheriff’s office that we didn’t have with MUD 70. Also, this additional deputy covers Westgate only on a 70/30% basis. Since this contract deputy is an ongoing cost, not a one time cost, the Board voted to raise our maintenance fees to cover it; we raised the fees by 10% to $605 for 2016. This increase allows Westgate to increase services but maintain financial health. Over the last year, we’ve begun several large projects to improve Westgate and we are continuing this process to maintain or increase our property values. • The most recent one undertaken is finishing more sidewalks in HOA common areas. Long areas along Westgate Park Dr. not only increase curb appeal and encourage enjoyment of our green spaces as well as fitness, but also address some safety issues for children walking to the pool. Some areas were simply left unfinished by the developer. • Other large projects we’ve undertaken include replacing and repairing the fences along common areas to maintain or improve curb appeal, as well as improving water efficiency in our sprinkler system by installing Water Logic systems. • We refurbished our pool deck by adding “Cool Deck”, not only giving it a fresh look, but also reducing the heat on the concrete. • We are also finalizing plans to add park equipment and refurbish our landscaping at entrances. • Finally, we have continually worked to maintain our parks and uphold deed restrictions, especially those that affect curb appeal in our neighborhood. We have to work within the time restrictions provided by the state, but it helps when residents report repairs that need to be done or egregious violations that need attention. Very recently, the Board approved instituting fines as allowed by our founding documents to encourage adherence to our deed restrictions, thus improving the look of our neighborhood. • We also have been working to collect monies owed to the neighborhood by residents who have neglected paying their dues. Some of these were backlogged due to KB being in control of the neighborhood until the end of 2013 and the lawyers have been playing catch up. We’ve had many lawsuits filed to address this. We are also keeping an eye on those costs, interviewing other law firms to make sure we are getting the best return on our money spent there. All of these projects cost money, but the return is positively maintaining or increasing our property values, really as an investment in our future. One final area of concern, Harris County MUD 70, the MUD that includes Westgate and Paddock, is holding elections on two positions in the spring. Neither of these positions is currently held by residents in either subdivision, but by people who do not have a vested interest in our area because they do not live here. As residents, we pay a significant amount of taxes to this entity, so it would best be served by people who live here. MUD’s I’ve lived in typically work with neighborhoods they serve to improve the area as Published by: Krenek Printing 7102 Glen Chase Ct • Houston, TX 77095 • 281-463-8649 1 December 2015 Westgate email: news@krenekprinting.com for articles • ads@krenekprinting.com for business ads • classified@krenekprinting.com for classified ads

well as make decisions on upkeep on its water related assets. For instance, the MUD I lived in while in Katy bought land next to our neighborhood and built a very nice, large park in order to prevent commercial encroachment that might have decreased property values and livability. A great investment. We need some residents to step forward to serve on this MUD Board. The MUD has not released the deadline to put your name in the election, but it’s typically very soon. Please contact the HOA Board at board@westgatetx.net if you’re interested in helping with this. Best regards, Kimberly McGaughy President, Westgate HOA Board of Directors Kimberly@westgatetx.net

HALLOWEEN THANKS
Thank you to all the volunteers’ help with the Halloween party and contest. We had a huge turnout and a great success because of the combined efforts of the following people: Kent and Kimberly McGaughy, Tim and Jennifer Goldmann, Gina Anderson Pirie & Family, Mike and Nicole Gerrard, Helen Daglas and Neil Staley, Jay and Penny Zaffino, Kayli Boswell, Rachel Gorney, Tom Rowley, Kathryn Rice-Hughes & Lonny, Timothy Bogott and Clyde Kriekenbeek. Thank you Cynthia Miller for the hooded towel donations! Also, a big thanks to Matt and Jessica Gill for the Ernie’s Best Pizza gift certificate donations! I hope I didn’t leave anyone out! Check out the photos of our costume contest winners (including Sandy, the pet winner!) and all the fun the kiddos had before trick or treating.
CHRISTMAS DECORATION CONTEST
Just wanted to give a heads-up to all the Westgate residents out there who like to show their holiday spirit! We’re having a Christmas Decoration Contest again this year! Winners not only get bragging rights, but also gift card prizes! The judges will drive around and judge the decorations on one weekend in December; be sure to tune in to our Facebook page and website to find out exactly when. So be sure to have your decoration lights on both those days if you want to participate. Afterward, we’ll announce the winners. The newsletter won’t have the winners in print until the February edition, but we will have it immediately on Facebook (Westgate Subdivision group) and the Westgate Website (www.westgatetx.com).
DIFFICULTY PAYING YOUR ANNUAL DUES?
If you haven’t yet paid your Westgate fees for 2016 and anticipate not being able to pay on time, be sure to call PCMI (281-870-0585) to discuss getting on a payment plan before more fees are tacked on from the attorney, etc. $605 can turn into $1000+ very quickly. If you don’t think you can pay all at once, you need to call PCMI to make payment arrangements, DON’T WAIT and cost yourself MORE money. These dues help pay for landscaping, electricity, water, refurbishing and adding amenities and pool management, among other things. It helps Westgate continue to be a great community with stable or increasing property values. If you’d ever like details of how your dues are spent, you can always ask our management company. Also, go to our annual meeting and you will receive a copy of the budget and actual expense list as well as a list of assets.
PROCEDURE WHEN FILING A REPORT WITH THE SHERIFF’S DEPT.
If you ever have to file a report with the Sheriff’s Department, whether after calling 911 or the nonemergency number (713-221-6000), be sure to let the deputy know that Westgate has a contract with the Sheriff’s Dept. through our MUD district (Harris County MUD #70). That way, the incident will be reported to our contract deputies, giving them information on what to look for in our community. Also, be sure to report the issue to our Crime Watch committee at crimewatch@ westgatetx.net. They discuss the problems with our deputies as well.

STAY UP TO DATE WITH WESTGATE NEWS
To get the latest information on what’s happening in Westgate, be sure to check our other Westgate sources: 1. The WESTGATE WEBSITE, www.westgatetx.net 2.) NextDoor Westgate.com 3. The Westgate FACEBOOK page (on Facebook, search for “WESTGATE SUBDIVISION” and you must sign up); you can find goodies like pictures of our events. If you have trouble finding it on Facebook, type this into your address bar: www.facebook.com/ groups/WestgateSubdivision/. Within a day or two, you will then be asked to verify your address, as it is a residents’ only group. Look for this in your “messages” section at the top left of the page and look under your “other” folder OR I will “friend” you to be able to send you a message directly. 4. Send questions to the WESTGATE HOA EMAIL, Board@ westgatetx.net. The newsletter only comes out once a month and information is a month old, so the other methods are used when something happens last minute and if you missed the newsletter. Also, I’ve spoken with residents who say they don’t receive a newsletter; if you know a
Westgate
resident who doesn’t get one, please have them email Kimberly@ westgatetx.net with their name and address and the editor will forward the information to the appropriate person at Krenek Printing.

If no pole number is listed, on the website you can use the GIS map listed on the website link above.

CY-RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INVITED TO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Cypress Ridge High School Symphony Orchestra will be joining an elite group of musicians with its invitation to the 69th annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago. The Midwest Clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference, the world’s largest instrumental music education conference, is scheduled for December 16th - 19th. Cypress Ridge is the first orchestra from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD to be chosen to perform. The 110 member Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra is among six international high school orchestras that will perform at the conference. Every year, groups of every type and size from all over the world apply for the honor of performing at the conference. The Cypress Ridge Symphony Orchestra was chosen based on its excellent resume of past contest performances and on a recorded audition submitted in March. The invitation to participate is an honor and culmination of the orchestra members many years of hard work and practice under the leadership of their director, Mr. Christopher Mustell. The orchestra recognizes the once-in-a-lifetime experience and looks forward to representing Cypress Ridge, CFISD and Houston. The expenses for this opportunity are challenging and expected to run $1,500 per student. Community support will be vital in making sure every symphony orchestra member may participate. Personal and business sponsorships will help support the program and reduce the student musicians’ costs. Donations are tax deductible and may be sent to:

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, selfconfidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). TROOP 1296 EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATE DAWSON BENNETT
Eagle scout candidate Dawson Bennett raised funds to support the building of 100 “Whisper Phones” for use in Copeland Elementary school. As a former Copeland Colt, Dawson chose a project that would give back to a school that he says “taught him so much.” Whisper Phones are a literacy tool that allows a student to whisper into it when reading aloud, which then amplifies their voice, allowing the student to hear their sounds and words distinctly. It also decreases noise levels in the classroom! If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, please call Troop 1296 Committee Chair Mr. David Covington, at 281-855-2239. Boy Scout Troop 1296 meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM during the school year. Meetings include activities, skill sessions and planning for our monthly camp outs. Come join the fun!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

HOUSTON CY-FAIR LIONS CLUB TO OFFER FREE VISION SCREENING
Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club will conduct FREE vision screening to children from six months of age and older at the Jersey Village Holiday in the Park, to be held Sunday December 6th, from 1-4 PM at Clark Henry Park. This vision screening uses a unique special camera that takes a photo of the child’s eyes and within seconds relates a pass or refer status. Those with the refer status will need to have a professional eye examination at a local optometrist. Vision problems are the leading disability in children, who are unaware that they cannot see properly. They cannot compare their vision to others and vision problems do not cause pain or inflammation, so parents, teachers and caregivers are unaware that the child has visual difficulties. Eighty percent of learning is visual. The Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club has recently purchased the Plusoptix Vision Screener for this community service project. This is part of a nationwide KidSight initiative through Lions Clubs International to screen children early for vision problems. Please bring your children to the Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club booth at Holiday in the Park for this important screening, which takes only a minute. To schedule a free vision screening at your day care or church, please contact: Sandy Martin, Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club Vision Screening Program, 281-550-2798 or bikee77095@yahoo.com.
