WELCOME COMMITTEE PUTTING THE “NEIGHBOR” BACK IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD Think back to when you first moved to Westheimer Lakes. New homeowners are usually disoriented, living out of boxes and not familiar with the neighborhood, parks, schools, churches, shopping facilities and other basics. Wouldn’t it have been nice to be greeted shortly after your arrival by a fellow resident who could offer helpful “insider” information (best shopping values, restaurants, etc.)? Now new residents will be! The Westheimer Lakes Welcome Committee was approved at the February POA Meeting and they will have begun meeting with new arrivals starting Mid-March 2016! The Welcome Committee will present new neighbors with basic neighborhood information (trash pickup schedules, direct neighborhood contacts, social media links and where to find news/events), as well as come bearing goodies, information and coupons from local businesses! If you would like to volunteer and help our Welcome committee or if you notice new arrivals to the neighborhood, please email mevrard@canyongate.com.

UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS WINE & CHEESE SPRING FLING

SATURDAY, APRIL 30TH, 7 AM - 12 NOON Get ready to start your Spring-cleaning. Rain or Shine, our community-wide garage sale will be Saturday, April 30th. You won’t have to haul your items far; it will take place in YOUR OWN garage! Just be ready to open your garage at 7 AM.

David Levin did a terrific job in the sale of our home. His dedication to getting us the right price, and the right buyer was unsurpassed. David’s expertise in presenting our home in the correct scenario for maximum appeal was critical to the timing of our sale. Not only did David sell our original home, he worked tirelessly to show us multiple possibilities for our next home. We ultimately purchased with his advice, influence and again, his expertise all contributing to the decision we made. Please do not store your trashcans in front of your garage or on the side of your home - your neighbors don’t want to look out their windows and see your garbage either. Please be respectful and only place trash out on specific trash days.

“The River” United Methodist Church, an exciting new church in our community, would like to invite you to participate in one of our local bible studies. Each “REAL Group” meets for about an hour to discuss topics of interest to the group. The discussions are grounded in the Word of God. Everyone is encouraged to drop the façade of having it all together and rather be honest about their lives, their struggles, their triumphs and their relationships with God. In fact, no perfect people are allowed in The River’s REAL Groups.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.

Most important is proper watering: • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!!

and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call.

IT’S THAT TIME

The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings, repair them.

By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing activity during the day it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her.

Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us. TWRC Wildlife Center is a Houston-based wildlife rehabilitation and education center available to anyone needing assistance with wildlife. Check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or call 713-468-TWRC and don’t forget to donate so we can continue to help wildlife as we’ve done for 36 years.

If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you continue to hear the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother Westheimer Lakes

This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness. Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media announcements and through other means as appropriate.

The contest is through April 8, 2016. All entries must be submitted or postmarked on or before April 8, 2016. Winners will be announced in early May. Contact Keep Texas Beautiful at 1-800-Clean-Up or info@ktb. org for any questions regarding the contest.
