Yards of the Month

Congratulations to the “Yard of the Month” winners for May! Special thanks to our sponsor Cornelius Nursery.

Westheimer Lakes: 11023 Overland Trail Drive (Canyon Village Section 1)

Westheimer Lakes North: 26318 Longview Creek Drive (Section 1)

To nominate a yard, please email the address and a picture, if possible, to mevrard@canyongate.com

TIMELY TIP FOR JUNE GARDENERS FROM CORNELIUS NURSERY June is a fun month filled with good weather for outside activities. Watching butterflies can be an entertaining pastime. Attracting butterflies to your garden is easy. Select foliage plants as food for the larvae or caterpillar and flowering plants to provide nectar for adults. Butterflies are attracted by fragrance, flower-shape and color. Choose a location with plenty of sun and protection from strong winds for your butterfly garden. A planting along a wall, building or hedge is ideal. Add a supply of dark rocks or mass of dark pebbles to collect the morning sun for the butterflies to rest and warm up. Sink a container full of sand or gravel into the ground and keep it moist. This will serve as a resting spot for some to drink and obtain minerals

June 2012

Start your butterfly bed by improving the soil. Incorporate compost into your garden soil. After planting, mulch your flowerbeds with 3 to 4 inches of mulch. You will eliminate weeding, reduce watering, keep the soil from cracking and protect roots of plants by maintaining cooler soil temperatures. Butterflies are mostly active in mid and late Summer, so make sure you have lots of nectar-rich plants and flowers blooming by then. If you plant large sections of flowers that are the same color, it will make it easier for them to find your garden. Plant flowers that will bloom at different times of the year and ones that bloom even at different times of the day and night, this way you will always have something in bloom. There is a world of exotic butterflies out there flying freely so offer a haven to these fabulous creatures and happy watching!

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students, the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. For more information and requirements, please contact Heather Wells by phone 281-770-3414 or by email ayusakaty@gmail.com.

Fort Bend House oF Hope - Bringing Healing and restoration to Hurting teens and tHeir Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christcentered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. For more information regarding our organization, check out our website at www.houseofhope-fortbend.org, or contact Janeen Smith at 832764-1123, houseofhopefortbend@comcast.net.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. ruoK ProGram Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK? (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK? After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

Dr. Amy Vogt

Caring For Pets and the People Who Care for Them

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighif you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. STANLEY ELEMENTARY RAISES FUNDS FOR THE SNOWDROP FOUNDATION

Stan C. Stanley Elementary students, parents and faculty came together to raise an impressive $12,649.43 for the Snowdrop Foundation. This money will assist patients and families at Texas Children’s Cancer Center through funding for continued research to eliminate childhood cancer, along with scholarships for college bound pediatric cancer patients and survivors. Stanley students participated by purchasing snowflakes to help turn Stanley into a winter wonderland, raising money to run with the principal and a change drive. The child who raised the most money in the school received a guitar from the foundation. In addition to the money donated to the Snowdrop Foundation, Principal Kerri Finnesand and staff members delivered over $800 to families in the cancer ward downtown.
