Everybody loves a parade! The Seven Lakes High School Band and Color Guard will participate in its 5th annual March-a-Thon fundraising parade on Saturday, September 12th. The band will march through sections of Grand Lakes from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM and through sections of Seven Meadows from about 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. The day’s festivities will conclude with a concert at Central Park in Seven Meadows. Donations of any amount may be made anywhere along the parade route. Students will be asking for pledges prior to the event and will be walking with collection buckets for donations along the route. For a minimum donation of $100, the entire band will play for you a song chosen from a selected song list. This may occur at your home if it is along the route or at another designated spot along the route or at the concert at the end of the parade. We are bringing back, again this year, the fight songs from Texas A&M, Texas Tech and the University of Texas on our song list and listen up LSU fans, we hope to have your song included this year as well!!! As mentioned, our festivities will conclude with a concert at Central Park in Seven Meadows followed by hot dogs, chips and drinks for our students and then to the public also for a small donation. Come back to visit www.slhsband.org in the next few weeks to see the song list and maps of the routes. Contact SLHS March-A-Thon Chairmen Chris Simank and Chris Freaney at vpfundraising@slhsband.org if you have any questions.

YFU INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE COMING TO OUR COMMUNITY Will you consider welcoming a YFU student into your heart, home and community? Youth For Understanding USA (YFU), a nonprofit educational organization, seeks volunteers and families to mentor and host high school exchange students. All you really need to host is the ability and desire to share your home and open your heart to a new family member and culture. Families need to provide 3 meals a day, transportation to school and a shared (or their own) room. When you open your heart and home as a host, you introduce a new family member to your traditions and shape a student’s understanding of the US culture. YFU students are between the ages of 15 and 18, are proficient in English, bring their own spending money and carry their own health insurance. We are always looking for host families to accommodate our various programs. YFU also offers study abroad programs for American students and volunteer opportunities. To learn more, contact Melanie Moseley at 903-771-1295 or email Melanie at mmoseley@yfu.org. Additional information and an online application are available at www.yfuusa.org.

VANDALISM IN COMMUNITY
In the past, Westheimer Lakes has been the target of numerous acts of vandalism. The POA believes that some of this vandalism may be occurring from individuals in the community. When items such as street signs, park signs, windows, lights are in need of replacement as result of this vandalism, your POA bears this expense. As a reminder, please beware of your surroundings and should you see any suspicious activity in the community please contact the Sherriff’s department (281-341-4665) immediately.
LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE! Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor and do your part! If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.

BASKETBALL GOALS
Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.
UNWANTED SOLICITORS NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community. If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would like to place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so. Please be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only (1) sign at your home. If you feel in danger and think the solicitor will be in the community long enough to call the authorities, we suggest you call the local Police Department.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

the largest and oldest student business organization in the world, held its National Leadership Conference from June 29th - July 2nd in the Windy City. Participants from across the United States and two countries were in attendance for this exciting conference to sharpen their business skills, expand their networks and participate in more than 55 business and business-related competitive events. After district and state competitions, students from Seven Lakes High School attended the FBLA National Leadership Conference to represent Texas in various events and 5 Seven Lakes students received national recognition. In individual events, Naveen Chokkar placed fourth in Securities & Investiments, Kirthi Dronamraju placed seventh in FBLA Principles & Procedures, Clio Sun placed eight in Business Procedures and Prateek Mahajan placed tenth in Database Design & Application. Pranay Tamminayana placed first in the open event, Leadership and currently serves as our Area V Vice President. As a chapter, Seven Lakes won the 2015 Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit, the FBLA Outstanding Chapter Award and the award for the 2nd Largest Chapter in the Mountain Plains region, with 278 members. The awards were a part of a comprehensive national competitive events program sponsored by FBLA-PBL that recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and careerrelated areas. For many of the students, the competitive events are the capstone activities of their academic careers. In addition to the competitions, students immersed themselves in educational workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall and attended motivational keynotes on a broad range of business topics. They also enjoyed sites from Chicago such as an architectural boat tour, trolley tour, the Willis Tower Skydeck, the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Museum of Science & Industry, Chicago Cultural Center and Navy Pier. It was a packed week of awards, activities and fun!

SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL 2015 MARCH-A-THON Everybody loves a parade! New Hope Child Development Center ended another fun year with many joyful celebrations including Splash Day and Graduation ceremony. Our “Big Kids” sang and danced their hearts out to a very proud audience of parents and students. There was lots of laughter with a few tears mixed in. We are always sad to see our children grow up and move on but we’ve been doing this for nearly 35 years so you would think we would be used to this by now! Our year was sprinkled with many community outreach projects benefiting Pregnancy Help Center’s Connor’s Closet, JoJo’s Bears, Eternal Food Ministries, Souper Bowl of Caring and several Homeless ministries. We are looking forward to another exciting school year. We have openings in our young 2’s class (18-23 months) and our Bridge class. We also have several employment opportunities as well. We are located at 1350 N. Mason Rd, Katy. Contact Julie Golden at 281-492-8521 or email us at newhopecdc1350@yahoo.com.

small - and all are greatly appreciated! Kennedy’s Disease is a rare and currently incurable and non-treatable X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuro-muscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps as well as other symptoms. Please go to www.kdgolfscramble.com and sign up to golf at the prestigious Cypress Lakes GC. If you can’t attend you can still sponsor a hole for $100 (silver), $300 (Gold) or $750 (platinum). All levels will give you a professionally done sign, with your name and sponsorship. The Platinum & Gold also gives you green fees & free raffle tickets. Hole sponsorships & donations are tax deductible. Shotgun start is 8 AM and registration starts at 6:45 AM, I will be there for the BBQ lunch & auction at 12 noon. All money collected goes to Kennedy’s Disease research for a treatment or cure. I’d sure like to see you there; maybe we can get a few minutes to catch up. My Success is based on yours!
I had the good fortune of making the acquaintance of David Levin when I was looking for a condo in the Houston area. In a matter of one day, this young man had me meet him at his office, reviewed what I was looking for in a condo, showed me several listings and even had me pre-qualified. The very next day, he was eager to show me several other listings. His work ethic, assertiveness and sincere concern for my needs has left a lasting impression on me because these are such rare qualities in today’s world. Even though I have decided not to move to Houston at the present time, I will forever be grateful for his genuine desire to help me. In the future, if I do make the move, he will be my only choice in realtors. Hastingmiller
