Parents, please make your children aware of safety issues and to be careful when walking through the neighborhood. Watch for traffic, cross the streets safely, don’t play near the streets. Drivers, please drive slowly and watch for children. With so many vehicles that are parked on the streets, children may dart out from behind these parked vehicles, PLEASE BE ALERT. There are many ways to keep your children busy and entertained during the summer. Check with local libraries, parks, churches and other establishments that offer summer camps.
VACATION WATCH
If you will be leaving your home to enjoy time away with the family, please be sure to Contact the Sheriff’s Department and fill out the Vacation Watch Form. They will help to keep an eye on your home while you are away. The phone number for the Franz Road Storefront is 281-647-9371. Other safety tips: 1. DO NOT ADVERTISE that you will be away on Facebook, Twitter or any other social media. 2. Notify the post office to hold your mail during the time you are away so the mail does not gather in your mailbox. 3. Stop newspaper service. 4. Set timers for lighting in your home to come on during evening hours.

5. Let trusted family/friends know that you are away so they can help to keep an eye on your property as well. 6. If you have an alarm monitoring service, ensure that windows are wired and large glass windows and/or doors are monitored with a glass breakage monitor. WHAT A BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU 1. I do my best to look inconspicuous as I check out your home. I may approach you as a sales/service person to get as much information as I can from you and if I’m lucky, I can get a quick peek inside your front door. 2. I don’t like barking dogs (even the smallest yapper can create some annoying noise) or nosy neighbors. 3. If I knock and no one answers, I assume no one is home and will try to gain entry. If you are home, “shoo” me away while showing me your cell phone so I know that a press of a button may be help on the way to you. ANNUAL MEETING As we look ahead, we would like to remind members that the Annual Meeting for Westlake Place Homeowners Association will be held on August 4, 2015. There are three positions up for election, so if there is anyone interested in serving your community as a Board of Director, please email a brief biography introducing yourself and what you have to offer the community by your service. You can email the information to ACMP, Inc, theodora@acmpinc.com. If you are not able to serve as a Director but would like to volunteer your time for special events, please contact ACMP, Inc. COMMUNITY CENTER/CLUBHOUSE, PAVILION, POOL The community center, clubhouse and pavilion are available for parties and special events for all residents. We encourage residents to use the amenities for their functions throughout the year. They are available for usage only by our resident’s and their guests. A $50 deposit for each one is required and refundable upon passing the exit inspection; contact Caroline Aragon at 281 974-0056, to set up scheduling and deposit. Caroline is the only one authorized to take the deposit. TEXAS PARKING LAWS The Board was notified about a couple of vehicles that were parked on the street without a valid inspection sticker or current registration. So, just as a friendly reminder here are some of the parking laws. • Park no closer than 30 feet from a stop sign. • Park no closer than 20 feet from a cross walk • Park no closer than 15 feet from a fire hydrant • Park no farther from the curb than 18 inches • Park with the flow of traffic • Vehicles parked on the street must have a valid, current registration and inspection sticker and be in operable condition • Parking for more than 48 hours on the street is a violation and will result in towing
August 2015
Westlake Place
• Do not obstruct the driveway of others with your vehicle • Double parking will result in a immediate citation and possible towing Do not forget the streets must be open and clear for any type of emergencies or emergency vehicle to be able to pass. Try to keep your area open so those needing to use the streets will have a clear passage. A friendly reminder the street is not a safe place where children should be playing. Our subdivision has had too much traffic and people using this as a short cut to get to where they are traveling to. Most travelers neglect to notice children, drive slow be cautious. HARRIS COUNTY CURFEW TO BE STRICTLY ENFORCED The Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies will be strictly enforcing curfew, zero tolerance. Most parents are unaware that Harris County has a curfew. Children under the age of 17 must be in at midnight (12 AM). Parent’s need to make sure that their children are at home the entire night. If children are caught wandering around at late hours after midnight, the Harris County Sheriff’s will give them a citation. This is a class C misdemeanor; both the child and the parent must appear in front of court and pay a fine. Usually it will take all day to take care of this and the fine may exceed $150.

OUR COMMUNITY SECURITY SUPPLEMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT
Westlake Place HOA-Board of Directors have hired off-duty deputies employed with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for our community. A friendly reminder from Westlake Place HOA-Board of Directors, having security does not mean you should not secure your own property or not be responsible for your own security. Take time to make sure your vehicles are locked, parked in the garage if you can. That is the safest place for your vehicle. When leaving your home make sure to lock all doors, secure the windows and lock the garage doors. Also, when leaving at night one deterrent is a well-lit area, so keep the lights on outside your home. Get to know your neighbors and be vigilant of your surroundings. The Board’s number one priority is trying to keep the entire subdivision safer and informed. REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES AND CRIMES When you see suspicious activity and would like to file a report etc, call the non-emergency. When a crime is in progress and or a human life is at risk call 9-1-1. If at any time someone observes a suspicious person or vehicle in the subdivision they should not hesitate in reporting it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The first thing a resident should do is contacting the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to file report. There are three ways to do this. If your incident is an emergency, call 9-1-1, if non-emergency call 713-221-6000 or

TRASH PICK-UP STICKERS BELONG ON TRASH CANS
The trash pickup sticker you receive each quarter shows you have paid your invoice and are a valid customer. It contains your address and the expiration date. The sticker is designed to be placed on the trashcan please do not place these stickers on your mailbox. These stickers occasionally won’t stick even to a garbage can; use a heavy-duty tape when this occurs. Trash will not be picked up if the sticker is not on the trashcan and they will not pick up the trash at your residence if you have not paid. Do not place these stickers on your mailbox. Do not leave your trashcans out for an extended period of time. Remove your cans from the street as soon as possible. The stickers and the trashcans might be stolen.
POSTING OF GARAGE SALE SIGNS
Please be aware that taping a sign of any kind to a stop sign or a road sign IS AGAINST THE LAW and could result in our deputies issuing you a citation.
Learn about the great fall programs available for you at the Katy Family YMCA.
• Youth and Teen Sports
TRASH CANS SHOULD BE USED FOR TRASH PICK UP
Some of our residents are unclear on the concept of putting trashcans at the curb for collection days (Tuesday and Friday). Trash can be put out after 5 PM the night prior to the scheduled collection day.
FUN FOR FALL FUN FOR ALL • Before and After School Care
All residents must complete a home improvement form for all improvements, including but not limited to: repainting (even the same color), re-roofing, new siding, sheds or outbuildings, new garage doors and basketball goals. The ACC approval must be given in advance prior to the work being started. We have specific guidelines for sheds and outbuildings. Call ACMP 281-855-9867 to request a form. Please mail to the ACMP address at the top of the form.
The correct way in our subdivision is using a staked sign place your address, time and date and remove later on that day or as soon as the event is over. This is the only acceptable way to post such signs. If posting a sign on a resident’s property, please ask for prior permission as a courtesy. If a resident places a garage sale sign in median of the front or back entrance and if this results in any type of damage to the sprinkler system, you will be charged for any needed repairs. We are requesting that all residents limit your garage sales to no more than once a quarter - meaning four times a year only.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

Chocolate Raspberry Cloud
INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies 3 tablespoons butter, melted 2 cups heavy cream 1/2 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup raspberry syrup 1 (9 ounce) package thin chocolate wafers 1/4 cup fresh raspberries (optional) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves (optional) 1/8 cup semisweet chocolate curls (optional)
DIRECTIONS: To Make Crust: In a small bowl, mix together crushed cookies and melted butter. Press mixture into a 9 inch pie pan using your hands or the back of a spoon. Refrigerate until firm. To Make Filling: Whip 2 cups of cream until soft peaks form. Continue to whip while slowly adding sugar, followed by vanilla extract. Whip until stiff, then stir in 1/2 cup raspberry syrup. MESSAGE FOR PARENTS OF KATY ISD 7TH GRADE STUDENTS
281-898-0965
Katy ISD has just been alerted by Pearson, the test contractor for STAAR exams, of a reporting error on all 7th grade Confidential Student Reports (CSR) that were sent home. In the STAAR Writing section, there are two scores reported for the writing compositions. One score for the Expository composition and one score for the Personal Narrative composition. The scores are reversed on the report you received.
TACLB52242E
Katy Family Owned & Operated
For example, if your child’s CSR shows 10/16 for Expository and 8/16 for Personal Narrative, your child actually scored 8/16 for Expository and 10/16 for Personal Narrative. This error does not impact your child’s overall writing score, Level II: Met Satisfactory standard or Level III: Advanced standard. Accurate CSRs will be sent home in early fall with correct composition scores and will be updated to include the new math standards when they are set. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s Principal.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER
The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy. 2015 • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

PETS
Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting. Lucy in the sky with diamonds! Lucy’s coat is super soft and she likes tummy rubs, sleeping with her humans and lots of love. Lucy would do well in a quiet household and she would love to be the only pet so she gets lots of playtime and attention! She is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and spayed. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
