ACC REQUESTS

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

Friends, we respectfully request that you submit an ACC request to the Westminster Village HOA, Inc, for changes to your yard or home. Things like sheds and back yard patios, visible from the street, require prior approval from the ACC committee. Changes to your yard, including even minor landscaping, rocks and bushes require approval from the Home Owner Association. The rule of thumb is you can’t make any changes to your yard or home that are visible from the street without prior approval. Please help keep expenses down by first getting permission to make changes instead of the HOA having to mail you a deed restriction letter.

SALES TAX WEEKEND AUG. 7 - 9, 2015

This year’s Sales Tax Holiday is Aug. 7th - 9th. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Subject to the criteria explained on the website (http://comptroller.texas.gov/taxinfo/taxpubs/taxholiday/d/), all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

GLUTEN FREE DIET 101 More and more we are hearing about gluten free diets and gluten sensitivity. But what exactly is this?

Build a bundle. Save a bundle.

Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and triticale. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. Gluten is in many foods, even ones that would not be expected.

It can potentially be found in: breads, pasta, cereals. Other common foods that contain gluten: • Pastas: raviolis, dumplings, couscous and gnocchi • Noodles: ramen, udon, soba (made with only a percentage of buckwheat flour) chow mein and egg noodles (Note: rice noodles and mung bean noodles are gluten free) • Breads/Pastries: croissants, pita, naan, bagels, flatbreads, cornbread, potato bread, muffins, donuts, rolls • Crackers: pretzels, goldfish, graham crackers • Baked Goods: cakes, cookies, pie crusts, brownies • Cereal & Granola: corn flakes and rice puffs often contain malt extract/flavoring, granola often made with regular oats, not gluten-free oats • Breakfast Foods: pancakes, waffles, french toast, crepes and biscuits • Breading & Coating Mixes: panko breadcrumbs • Croutons: stuffings, dressings • Sauces & Gravies (many use wheat flour as a thickener) traditional soy sauce, cream sauces made with a roux • Flour tortillas • Beer (unless explicitly gluten-free) and any malt beverages (see “Distilled Beverages and Vinegars” below for more information on alcoholic beverages) • Brewer’s Yeast • Anything else that uses “wheat flour” as an ingredient But what CAN you eat? It is simple: fresh is best. Cutting out gluten from your diet may seem like a difficult and limiting task. Fortunately, there are many healthy and delicious foods that are naturally gluten-free: • Fruits • Vegetables • Meat and poultry

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through August. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

BOY SCOUTS

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

WANT TO BE A SCOUT?

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

Cy-Fair Area Boy Scouts of America leaders will make a push to recruit area boys for membership, with multiple dates and venues available for parents with questions. The Boy Scouts will have a booth at the Cy-Fair ISD Back To School Expo, which is 9 AM to 1 PM, Saturday, August 16th, at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress. Scout leaders there can direct prospects to the proper units, based on age and geography. The Soaring Eagle District of the BSA will host rally nights at respective elementary schools for Cub Scouts, which is boys in first through sixth grades. Rally nights are Tuesday, September 1st and Monday, September 21 st, at area elementary schools. For information on the rallies or to find the closest rally to your home, please call BSA volunteer Steve Ware at 713-828-7870. Boy Scouts, which has been around for more than 100 years, teaches timeless values and builds character through outdoor camping and organized activities.

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Talkative cat looking for a loving home! Benjamin is a shorthaired brown tabby cat, whose human mom recently died. He’s about 3 years old, he likes to sleep with his humans at night and he loves attention. Benjamin is pretty shy and gets easily startled, but he likes to go outside for a bit, as long as he can run right back in at the first sign of danger! He would do best in a quiet household because of his dislike of loud or sudden noises and he would love to be an only cat. Benjamin is up-to-date on rabies & flea treatment, litter-box trained and neutered. Contact 281-250-3266 to arrange a meeting.
