Park hours have been posted. Park hours are 8 AM to 8 PM. Also, those wishing to play baseball in the park or street, please be careful. Any damage done to resident’s property is the responsibility of those parents of the children that cause it. Also it has been brought to the Board’s attention that use of foul language and trouble at the park must stop. If Constables report such behavior, individuals may become barred from park/pool area. Let’s all have fun and play nice. Older kids watch out for little ears nearby. Remember, $250 reward to anyone who provides information about damage or vandalism to the park. This reward will be paid and no one will ever know who reported such damage.
STREET LIGHTS
Your Association pays for your streetlights from your annual dues, whether they work or not. If a light is out in your area, please call 713-207-2222 and report it. Each light pole should have a number on it. When reporting the out or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number and closest street address. We want all of our lights to work. A lighted area is a safer area.

ABANDONED OR OVERGROWN PROPERTY
Do you live next door or near someone who has abandoned or left a house vacant? Has the grass grown two or more feet high? Are there rodents and snakes coming from their backyards? Would you like to get the property cleaned up? Can you see over the back fence from your property? Williamsburg Colony Maintenance Association cannot call the Harris County Health Department at 713-439-6270, since we can only report on property adjacent to the front entrance and the Pool/ Clubhouse areas. We need someone who will give permission for the Health Department to come on their property to view violations of neighbors. So please, help us get rid of dangerous conditions in our subdivision.

Curfew Reminder
We would like to remind residents that being in Harris County means those under the age of 18 must not be roaming the streets after midnight. Any children spotted after midnight should be reported to the Constables at 281-463-6666. Most of the trouble we have in the subdivision that is attributed to mischievous minors occurs after the curfew. Once park hours are posted, anyone in the park after hours will be charged with trespassing.

GARAGE SALE SIGNS
To all Williamsburg Colony residents, garage sales are great, we can increase our attic and closet space, locate things we forgot that we had and most important, make a few extra bucks. The one thing that is sometimes forgotten is the placement and removal of our garage sale signs. So please neighbors, if and when you have a garage sale, let’s try and remember not to place garage sale signs on any of our community signs or poles. Also, remove signs that are staked when your garage sale is complete. Cleaner streets do make a difference.
Veterinary Public Health LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Toxic plants and holiday/winter products: Plants and other items associated with the winter and holiday season can be toxic to your pets. What follows is a general guide. Please consult your veterinarian, animal poison control and the manufacturer for specifics. Remember, the earlier you seek treatment, the better for your pet! Low toxicity - poinsettia leaves/stems; balsam/pine/cedar/fir; angel hair (spun glass); Christmas tree preservatives; snow sprays/snow flock; tree ornaments; super glue; styrofoam; icicles (tinsel) and crayons/paints. Moderate toxicity - fireplace colors/salts; plastic model cement Moderate to high toxicity holly berries and leaves; bubbling lights (methylene chloride); snow scenes (may contain salmonella); aftershaves/perfumes/alcoholic beverages and chocolate (dark is more toxic than milk). Highly toxic - mistletoe (especially berries); expoxy adhesives; and antifreeze. Please note that some items have special problems. For example, whereas angel hair is usually considered to be of low toxicity, it can irritate eyes, skin and the gastrointestinal tract; the content of Christmas tree preservatives varies and often effects depend upon the amount ingested; styrofoam, small parts from Christmas tree ornaments and toys, as well as tinsel, can cause mechanical obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract; snow flock can cause problems if sprayed into the mouth and inhaled and chocolate, of any type, should never be given to a pet. Hanukkah
In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.
HAPPY Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. HOW TO USE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SAFELY
• Keep Christmas lights stored in a covered box, wrapped neatly around a plastic light organizer or just loosely wrapped, untangled. • Check each and every light for broken or non-functioning bulbs. Discard lights that don’t work and replace with new bulbs. • Make sure cords and wiring are intact. Avoid frayed cords - discard immediately if frayed. • Know that there are separate lights for indoor and outdoor use. Use indoor lights inside your home and UL-approved outdoor lights outside. • Turn off all Christmas lights when you go to bed. • Use mini, low-voltage lights on a tree. The large lights generate too much heat and can dry out your tree faster, making it a fire hazard.

New Year Celebrations Can Bring Danger
The New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations can often be fraught with dangers to both people and property. If you plan to use fireworks, please do so in such a way that the debris does not find its way onto your neighbor’s roof or their yard or driveway. Exercise extreme caution so that you do not inadvertently set a neighbor’s home on fire. After you have finished with your fireworks display, clean up the mess so that it is not left as an eyesore for the neighbors to clean. Please confine fireworks to reasonable hours. Fireworks after 1 AM are annoying to most of your neighbors. If you have children, please closely supervise them. Each year at New Year’s and in July we read of children maimed or killed by fireworks. If you must use fireworks, exercise sober care and watch your children carefully. If you drink, don’t drive. The Sheriff’s Department and DPS will be conducting stepped up programs to lower or eliminate the incidents involving drunk drivers.

LOCAL TEACHERS ATTEND TSCA CONVENTION
San Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon.

Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership. Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.

CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients.

A Christmas Eve Contemporary Worship service featuring the praise band will be held at 2 pm. Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.
