WINTER PET CARE TIPS

Housing: It is best to keep pets indoors during the winter months, but if this is not possible, outdoor pets must be provided with shelter. Their home should be elevated off the ground to prevent moisture accumulation and have a door of some kind to keep out winter winds. Shelters should be insulated or heated. Water sources may be heated to permit constant access to unfrozen water; thermal units designed specifically for this purpose are readily available. Outdoor pets require extra calories to keep warm. Feed your pet according to its needs when the temperature drops. In severely cold or inclement weather, no pet should be kept outside. Indoor pets should have sleeping quarters in a draft-free, warm area with their bed or mattress elevated slightly off the floor. Roaming cats: Roaming cats, as well as house pets and wildlife, may climb onto vehicle engines for warmth during cold weather. Be sure to check under the hood before starting your vehicle and honk the horn to startle any animals seeking shelter inside. Frostbite: Frostbitten skin is red or gray and may slough. Apply warm, moist towels to thaw out frostbitten areas slowly until the skin appears flushed. Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible for further care. Source: www.avma.org.

WINTER TIPS FOR YOUR PLANTS

Winter Tips • Water houseplants less since they grow more slowly on short, dark days. Too much water will kill them. • Don’t fertilize them unless they are growing under artificial lights. • Lining shelves or windowsills with aluminum foil reflects light and provides extra light for houseplants. Be sure there are no leaks that allow water to collect under the foil and damage sills. Caring for houseplants while you’re away on vacation • A week or so before your trip, turn the heat register off in a room with indirect light. • Monitor room temperature with a thermometer placed on the floor. • Check frequently to determine fluctuations of temperature. Ideally temperature should be between low-to-mid 50’s during the day, falling into the upper 40’s at night. At this range, your plants will survive without extra care for a few weeks. • Water all plants the day before you leave, whether they need it or not. Let pots drain fully. • Cover the floor of the room with newspapers and plastic and place all your plants together in the room. • Open curtains, drapes or blinds to allow optimum light to enter the room. Make sure plants aren’t in drafts. • You can also use self-watering wicks available in most plant stores for watering. • If you don’t have a room for the plants, try leaving them in the bathtub. After soaking them good, cover them with a sheet of plastic and they’ll survive for 2 weeks or longer. Shut off the heater vent in the bathroom so the room will remain cool and the heat won’t dry the plants out. Keeping Your Winter Plants Safe Smaller, younger plants have a harder time surviving the cold than larger plants. Be sure and protect these during frigid weather. If you have plants that have been attacked by insects or diseases, pay special attention to them during the winter.

• When purchasing a space heater, make sure that it is approved by a certified testing organization. • Read the manual that came with your space heater before using it. • Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that might be flammable such as furniture, draperies or curtains, bedding, rugs or clothing. • Keep space heaters away from areas where water may come in contact with the heater. • If you intend to use a space heater in the bathroom, check the manual before purchasing to make sure it is safe to use in areas where there is water. • Keep children away from space heaters. Never leave a child unattended in a room where there is a space heater. • Don’t plug a space heater into an extension cord. If you have to use an extension cord, check the manufacturer’s recommendations on the cord and make sure that it is the proper wire gauge size and type. • Don’t use space heaters in areas where flammable liquids such as gasoline or kerosene are used or stored. Space heaters have hot parts that can cause sparking and start a fire. • Never use a space heater to warm bedding, dry clothes, cook food or thaw pipes. • When you’re not using a space heater, turn it off and unplug it. • Turn off and unplug all space heaters before going to bed.

TIPS ON KEEPING THE ELDERLY WARM THIS WINTER

Winter is upon us once again and to keep warm is vital for your health, especially if you’re older, because if your body temperature drops too low the risk of heart attacks, strokes and breathing problems is very common for people over 60. Pensioners are at most risk. Many die each year due to general cold weather as much as extreme cold weather, so try to keep an eye out for neighbors who live nearby this winter when you’re out and about. Check that newspapers and mail have been collected. Homes with curtains drawn during the day and lights off during the night, could be a cause for concern and your help could be needed, so don’t feel embarrassed to knock on the door or call them to check they are OK. If there is no answer call a relative who will have spare keys. If that’s not possible, call the emergency services. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Hypothermia: If the body becomes too cold, the risk of Hypothermia is very great. It can be caused by the briefest exposure to severe cold weather or prolonged exposure to milder weather. If you come across anyone who is suffering from extreme cold skin, drowsiness, slurred speech or loss of sensation (not feeling cold when it is cold), then they could be suffering from Hypothermia. If they are indoors, cover them in a blanket to keep them warm. Give them warm drinks and call the emergency services. If they are out and about, try to get them inside as soon as possible and cover with blankets, turn the heating up gradually, offer warm drinks and call the emergency services if you’re in any doubt on the severity of their condition. • Make sure you wear lots of thinner layers of clothing rather than fewer thicker ones. This will help trap the heat in. • Keep your home at a decent temperature of at least 71 F. • Use hot water bottles in bed OR electric blankets but NEVER both due to the risk of electrical shock. • Eat plenty of hot foods like stews and soups and hot drinks throughout the day. This will help maintain your body temperature. • Keep moving. This will generate extra heat so try and get up and move around every hour. Source: www.hubpages.com

www.metplumbing.com GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate

size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

47 YEARS EXPERIENCE

FACTS ON CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that approximately 200 people per year are killed by accidental CO poisoning, with an additional 5,000 people injured - more accidental poisonings than any other chemical substance. During winter, when our houses are closed up to keep warm and appliances such as heaters and furnaces are operating, the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning increases dramatically. Known as the “Silent Killer,” carbon monoxide is a tasteless, odorless, colorless toxic gas that is a by-product of combustion and is virtually impossible to detect. Any fuel-burning appliance or device can produce dangerous levels of this gas and must be maintained properly to avoid the buildup of this poison in your home. What can cause carbon monoxide poisoning in the home? Fuel-fired furnaces (check for cracked furnace exchange); Gas water heaters (check for corroded or disconnected water heater flue); Fireplaces and wood stoves (check for dirty or clogged chimneys); Gas stoves (check for proper installation); Gas dryers (use outside ventilation); Any gas or kerosene appliance such as portable heaters; Charcoal grills (don’t operate inside or in an enclosed area such as garage); Gas engines such as lawnmowers, blowers and other yard equipment; Automobile exhaust (especially dangerous in an attached garage); Cigarette smoke; Anywhere combustion takes place. What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning? The symptoms of CO poisoning are commonly mistaken for other illnesses such as the flu or a cold. Concentration levels of CO in your bloodstream can cause: 10% concentration - no apparent symptoms (heavy smokers can have as much as 9% COHb); 15% concentration - mild headache, 25% concentration - nausea, serious headache (quick recovery after treatment with oxygen or fresh air); 30% concentration - intensified headaches, nausea, dizziness, increased pulse and respiration (potential for long-term effects, especially in infants, children, the elderly, victims of heart disease and pregnant women); 45% concentration - unconsciousness, possible collapse, convulsions, coma and eventually death; 50%+ concentration – death. CAUTION: Carbon monoxide especially affects unborn babies, infants, people with anemia or a history of heart or respiratory disease and pregnant women. How can I prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in my home? • Make sure your fuel-burning appliances (oil and gas furnaces, gas water heaters, gas ranges and ovens, gas dryers, gas or kerosene space heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves) are installed and working according to manufacturers’ instructions and local building codes. • Have all of your fuel-burning appliances inspected and cleaned by a professional at the beginning of every heating season. • Make certain that flues and chimneys are connected, unclogged and in good working condition. • Have only a qualified technician install or convert fuel-burning equipment from one type to another. • Never use ovens and gas ranges to heat your home. • Never use a charcoal grill inside a home, cabin, recreational vehicle or camper - even in a fireplace. • Never leave your car idling or a mower or blower running in a closed garage. Fumes can build up very quickly in the garage and living area of your home. • Make sure your furnace has an adequate intake of outside air. • Choose appliances that vent fumes to the outside whenever possible. If you cannot avoid using an unvented gas or kerosene space heater, follow the cautions that come with the device carefully. • Use the proper fuel and keep doors to the rest of the house open when using gas or kerosene space heaters. Crack a window to ensure enough air for ventilation and proper burning of fuel. Never sleep in an enclosed space with gas or kerosene space heaters. • Install carbon monoxide detectors with an audible alarm in your home and garage. DON’T IGNORE SYMPTOMS, particularly if more than one person is feeling them. You could lose consciousness and die if you do nothing. Play it safe. If you DO experience symptoms that you think could be from CO poisoning: Get fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, turn off fuel-burning appliances and leave the house. Go to an emergency room and tell the physician you suspect CO poisoning. Source: www.pp.okstate.edu/ehs/links/co.htm

Zerona Melts Fat!!!

Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 345 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 15th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a threeyear period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. Most of our visiting readers return year after year,” says Sandi Meier, Katy ISD Promise to Read and Classroom Champions Coordinator. “Having a guest reader in the classroom is a fun treat for students, but it also promotes the life-long joy of reading.” Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: Amegy Bank, American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, CenterPoint Energy, Chick-Fil-A of Katy, City of Katy, CiCi’s Pizza, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Gary Greene Realtors, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Houston Aeros, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Kelliwood Animal Hospital, Members Choice Credit Union, Memorial Hermann, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, SmartOrigami, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank and Wood Group. New Latter-day Saint Congregation in Katy

Growth in the Katy area has led to the need for a new congregation in the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A congregation, called a ward, is a geographic area with about 300600 church members. When an area sees growth, such that local wards are reaching the upper size limits, a new ward is formed. That is what happened this October in Katy, with the creation of the new Katy Mills Ward. Portions of the existing Katy 1st Ward, Katy 3rd and Katy 4th, make up the new ward. Katy Mills Ward now serves 350 church members south of I-10, between Woods Road on the west and Mason Road on the east, with the south boundary approximately at FM 1463. The Katy Mills Ward is one of eleven congregations that make up the Katy Stake. The Church presence in Katy began with one member in around 1950 and has steadily grown since then and now includes several thousand Latter-day Saints. The new Katy Mills Ward meets at the LDS meetinghouse at 1928 Drexel Road in Katy, sharing that building with two other wards. Their Sunday meetings start at 11:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome. Times and locations for all wards can be found at Mormon.org; click on “visit us,” enter an address and the appropriate location and meeting schedule will be supplied. Alternatively, clicking on the map to locate a nearby meeting is also an option on the webpage.
