VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH LEASH LAW
281-829-9900 LOST YOUR PET?
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”
REMINDER OF HARRIS COUNTY BANNING OF SALE OF ANIMALS ALONG PUBLIC ROADS
Restraint is defined as the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more then six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk to street. While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
Williamsburg Area
In 2007, Harris County moved to ban sales of animals along public roads and parking lots in unincorporated areas. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor which can mean a $500 fine.

MARCH GARDENING TIPS VEGETABLES • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon. LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.

SAINT PATRICK’S DAY Saint Patrick’s Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide. Why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that it is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins. In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line.
TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS If you are between 12 and 18 and would like to be added to the teenage job seeker’s list, please fill out the form on our website (www.krenekprinting.com, click submissions and choose Jobseekers) with your name, birthdate (mo. & yr.), phone number, year you will graduate and the name of your newsletter/subdivision. Check the list of jobs you want on your form. Please make sure your email is correct, we send emails in the summer to make sure all the info is still good and that you want to stay on the list. If we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the list until we do. Must have parent(s) permission. DISCLAIMER Neither the subdivision, nor Krenek Printing is responsible for those listed on the Teenage Job Seeker List. Please ask for and check out references if you do not personally know those listed. This is just a list of teenagers from the subdivision who wish to find part time jobs. Responsibility for any work done by these teenagers is between those seeking helpers and the teens and their parents.
CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.

2015 FOOD FOR FAMILIES CAMPAIGN RAISES $26,000 FOR KATY ISD FAMILIES
Katy ISD Partners in Education is celebrating another successful Food for Families campaign, the District’s annual community initiative that supports families in need. Principals from every campus identify students and $50 grocery gift cards are given to those students’ families before the winter break. Initially conceived as a way for Katy ISD employees at the administration building to help students and their families, Food for Families has burgeoned into a communitywide initiative that is now primarily supported by individual, private contributions. And for the first time, local eateries donated a portion of their proceeds during the inaugural “Food for Families Restaurant Week,” ultimately helping to provide gift cards for 40 families. Food for Families, a Katy ISD Partners in Education yearly initiative, unites our Katy ISD staff and community in holiday support for select students and their families. To learn more, visit Partners in Education under the “Community” tab at www.katyisd.org or contact Tammy Stringer, 281-396-2645, tammyrstringer@katyisd.org.
BP LEADS AS KATY ISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION CORNERSTONE INVESTOR
The Katy ISD Education Foundation is pleased to announce that BP America, Inc. has returned for its second year as a Foundation Cornerstone Investor by contributing $50,000 for STEM related teacher grants. The BP STEM Grant Program is administered via the Foundation’s Inspiring Imagination teacher grant initiative for grants in place this school year. STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and represents the integration of science and mathematics into existing areas of study. “We are grateful for our alliance with BP America, Inc. and welcome its continued support,” said Ken Janda, Katy ISD Education Foundation Board President. “Our BP STEM Grant Program has already benefitted hundreds of Katy ISD teachers. This second BP contribution will reach even farther, providing teachers with countless opportunities to bring extraordinary classroom experiences to their students.”

HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY
Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children - not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.
