SAFETY FIRST HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS FOR SHOPPERS
The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) reminds holiday shoppers to keep safety in mind as they hunt for those last-minute bargains. The organization best known for its icon “McGruff” the Crime Dog, has tips to help you shop safely while getting those great holiday bargains.
SHOPPING IN STORES
• Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car. • Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in. • Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as one time or multiuse disposable credit cards or money orders, at online stores and auction sites. • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information. • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit.

WALKING TO AND FROM YOUR CAR
• Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the care before getting in. • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or, if possible, take them directly home.

• If you are shopping with small children, make a plan in case you are separated from each other. • Select a meeting place. • Teach them to know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help. • Before surfing the Internet, secure your personal computers by updating your security software. Everyone’s computer should have anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-spam software, as well as a good firewall installed. • Keep your personal information private and your password secure. Do not respond to requests to “verify” your password or credit care information unless you initiated the contact. Legitimate businesses will not contact you in this manner. • Beware of “bargains” from companies with whom you are unfamiliar. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! • Use secure websites for purchases. Look for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom of the screen or “https” in the URL address. • Shop with companies you know and trust. Check for background information if you plan to buy from a new or unfamiliar company. Sheriff Adrian Garcia HCSO

WELCOME NEW RESIDENT
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-1313; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

TOP CHRISTMAS MOVIES
Elf Will Ferrell brings the laughs in this 2003 movie about a boy who was raised by elves. When Buddy the Elf heads off to New York to find his real dad, he has a bit of a hard time fitting in with his elf costume and love of all things maple syrup. But he soon manages to win over his new family, even his emotionally stunted dad and manages to bring Christmas spirit to even the most jaded New Yorkers. The Nightmare Before Christmas When Jack Skellington grows tired of Halloween Town, he wanders into the forest and accidentally opens a portal to a magical place called Christmas Town. Can he convince his fellow townsmen that this new town is a magical place or will he be forced to watch as Christmas Town is taken over and it’s magical spirit robbed? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation In this laugh-out-loud movie form 1989, Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) is gung-ho about having a good old-fashioned family Christmas, even when his dead-beat brother shows up and parks his RV in the driveway and the cat gets electrocuted by the Christmas tree. After all, it’s not Christmas without a little drama, right? Home Alone In 1990, Macauley Culkin starred in his breakout role as an 8-yearold who gets left behind when his family takes off for vacation. While he’s home alone, he’s forced to deal with two burglars who have cased the neighborhood to steal Christmas gifts. Using smarts, wit and a few crafty traps, he manages to ward off the burglars and reunite with his family just in time for the holiday. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer This classic made-for-TV Christmas movie premiered in 1964 and it’s been delighting generations of kids ever since. It tells the story of Rudolph, a reindeer with a nose that lights up. He’s looking for a place where he belongs. Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town This 1970 TV movie is about Kris Kringle - the man who becomes Santa Claus - and how he brings toys to children in a town that has outlawed them. But what really makes this movie a Christmas classic is the fearsome Winter Warlock’s transformation into a compassionate wizard with the wonderful song “Put One Foot In Front of the Other.”

A Christmas Carol Whether you like the 1984 version starring George C. Scott or the 1976, 1977, 1999, or 2000 version - a remake seems to come out every year - this is a holiday classic. Based on a story by Charles Dickens about an old miser named Scrooge who learns compassion when three ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve, this makes a great holiday movie because it’s thrilling and it has a nice message.
Miracle on 34th Street In this sweet 1947 movie, a Macy’s executive tries to find a new store Santa. She hires an old man named Kris Kringle who claims to be the one-and-only Santa Claus. Of course, such claims can get you into trouble and Kris ends up being hospitalized for some kind of delusional disorder. Hope comes in the form of a young man who wants to help Kris prove that he is really and truly Santa.
White Christmas Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are charming in this old-time classic from 1954. Both actors play World War II vets who fall in love with two sisters and go on to become an entertainment duo who make it big as producers of a hit Broadway show. When they find out an old friend is on the verge of bankruptcy, they use their star power to summon help on Christmas Eve and give their friend perhaps the best Christmas present of all.
The Year Without a Santa Claus Another stop-motion classic from the ‘70s, in which Santa finds himself feeling too discouraged to make his Christmas rounds. He’s sick and he doesn’t think that kids believe in him anymore. Two elves embark on a quest to find children who still believe in Santa. The plot is pretty flimsy, but children won’t mind - they’ll be too taken with the catchy musical numbers.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Grinch (a non-human Scrooge) tries to ruin Christmas for the Whos in Whoville by stealing their presents, trees and holiday treats. Of course, the Grinch has a change of heart and finds love and friendship with the Whos. A Charlie Brown Christmas In this half-hour Christmas special, Charlie Brown becomes the director of the school holiday pageant and goes out with Linus to buy an aluminum tree for the show. Instead, they bring back a forlorn real tree. Our hapless hero finds himself dismayed by the rampant commercialization of the holidays and searches for the true meaning of Christmas.
A Christmas Story This 1983 comedy celebrates the sort of Christmas a young boy may have had in the 1940s. Young Ralphie Parker wants only one thing: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle. His parents don’t want him to shoot his eye out and refuse to get it. Wacky hijinks ensue as Ralphie develops some very creative ploys to convince his mother and father that this is the only thing they should give him.
It’s a Wonderful Life What holiday movie list would be complete without this 1946 Frank Capra classic, starring James Stewart? A man about to commit suicide during the holidays because he’s financially ruined is stopped by an angel who shows him what life would be like if he’d never existed. It’s a charming movie - part romance, part pathos and a celebration of life.

CHRISTMAS DIET TIPS
Christmas doesn’t have to throw you off track. There are a number of things that you can do to satisfy your cravings and still have a weight gain-free holiday.
KATY POSTAL FACTORY
• ‘Tis the season for Christmas shopping. Embrace going to the mall and be sure you walk from one end to the other. Not only that, but you’ll probably not find a parking space close to the mall. If you do don’t take it. Instead park as far away as you can and walk. Be sure you carry your packages with you. All of that added exercise can help to burn calories during the holiday season. • Host your own party. Its inevitable that you will be invited to parties at Christmas and everyone knows what kind of treats find their way onto the table at such parties. Why not take the bull by the horns and host your own party? That way you can control the foods that are offered. If you do go to another’s Christmas party, offer to bring something and then bring a healthy Christmas snack that will tempt you. • Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol in and of itself isn’t necessarily fattening. It has seven calories per gram (as opposed to four calories per gram in carbohydrates and proteins and nine calories per gram in fats). Alcohol, however, is metabolized differently in your body than other macronutrients. Alcohol is always metabolized ahead of anything else that you eat, so it can put your diet on hold. If you do have an alcoholic beverage, stick to simple drinks without a lot of sugar or heavy ingredients. A glass of dry wine or a spirit served neat or on ice are better bets than eggnog, which is loaded with sugar, fat, calories and alcohol. • Control your portion sizes. If you simply can’t pass up that piece of fudge, then have just a small square. • Make smart substitutions. If you’re still craving that fudge, you may wish to satisfy that fudge craving with a small square of dark chocolate, which is rich in antioxidants and lower in sugar and fat than a square of fudge. • Don’t shop hungry. It may be an old axiom, but it is a good one. If you go to the grocery store hungry, you are far more likely to cave in to temptation and bring home foods that will tempt you to go astray. Even the best laid diet plans have been thrown off by a gingerbread cookie or a slice of pie. Eat a healthy snack before you go shopping and shop with a list. • Don’t keep temptations around the house. It’s difficult enough navigating the office and the parties, but if every time you open the refrigerator you stare down a pumpkin pie, there’s a good chance you’ll crack. If you must have holiday treats in your house, try baking up some healthy holiday desserts and keeping those on hand. • Be sure to get plenty of exercise. The holiday season can be busy and exhausting. Sometimes it just seems like you don’t have the time or the energy to exercise. Ironically, one of the ways to fix flagging energy is by exercising. Don’t skip on your regular exercise routine no matter how busy you are. Even if you only have 30 minutes, take those 30 minutes and get active. Walk around your neighborhood and look at Christmas lights. Go outside and build a snowman with the kids. It doesn’t have to be formal exercise, as long as you are moving. There is no need to allow the holidays to derail your diet. With a little planning and a few diet tips, you can stay on track all season.

HANUKKAH
In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.

Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.
THE RIGHT WAY TO GIVE
• Give with a cheerful heart. • Give within your means. An expensive gift doesn’t mean it’s the best. • Giving comes from your heart, not from the wallet. • Some gifts are priceless... love, time, effort, encouragement, prayer, etc. • Observe the needs and wants of the person you’re giving to. Consider his/her hobbies, lifestyle and what he/she wears. • Be creative, imaginative and crazy. • Shop for gifts early to avoid last-minute frantic rush.
GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over afterChristmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org. Anxiety over afterChristmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com

PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way. Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit CenterPointEnergy.com/trees.
