ARBOR WORKS

Landscaping: Trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers add a great deal to the value of your home and the community. Remember that over time trees and shrubs can become overgrown and unsightly. Painting: It is important to put a good coat of paint on your home which may mean painting every three to five years on an average, depending on the quality of the paint. Painting obviously improves the appearance of your home and protects your wood or hardiplank from the elements reducing rot. Don’t forget your ACC application along with paint color samples, which must be processed and approved first!

Gutters: Gutters need to be cleaned out on a regular basis. This time of year they fill up with pine needles and leaves. If the gutters are full of leaves and pine needles, they will not drain properly and will need to be cleaned. The extra weight will cause the gutter nails to become loose and the gutter will sag or fall from your home. Gutters are important as they protect the fascia boards.

PET HOTLINE NEWS

281-859-5637 16100 Cairnway, Suite 285

Kittens and puppies are being dumped in Subdivisions and shopping strips. They will not find good homes. Most will be taken by the pound or shelter and those are overflowing with pets. They cannot help but have to euthanize some. You, as a responsible pet owner can be of great help by having your cat or dog spayed or neutered and not worry about finding homes for the offspring. You will have a healthier and happy pet. Another and very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or, the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all.

nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

Parades, football and turkey. These are the things many of us count on for Thanksgiving Day. In the US, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Liberia and Switzerland also celebrate an official Thanksgiving Day. When you, your family and friends are celebrating this year, please remember our troops around the world. They are the reason we have the freedom to give thanks again this holiday season.

BLACK FRIDAY TIPS

• The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good time. • The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store layout! • Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks! • Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make sure you get it early! • Check online: some deals can be had online without the inperson hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you double check! • Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday! Courtesy of marioarmstrong.com/blackfriday

WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT STAAR END OF COURSE TESTS The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) are tests administered in grades 3rd through 8th in all school districts in the state of Texas. End of Course Exams (EOC) are tests administered in grades 9th through 12th and passing scores on these exams are required to graduate from high school in Texas.

Find us on Facebook for specials, promotions, helpful tips and information. Become a fan and receive discounts off your next visit! www.facebook.com/marcosacinc

Some key aspects of the End of Course exams are: • Students must successfully pass five EOC exams in high school to graduate: Algebra I, English I, English II, U.S. History and Biology. • Based on scores, students may earn advanced, satisfactory or unsatisfactory ratings. • Students testing for the first time in these courses test in the spring. • Should any student fail an End of Course exam in the spring, opportunities to re-test occur in the summer, fall and following spring. • End of Course (EOC) Prep courses are offered in CFISD during the summer. • Cy Lakes High School offers tutoring for EOC courses - students should inquire with teachers of each subject about tutorials. Cy Lakes parents should use the Home Access Center (HAC) not only to check subject grades, but also to monitor students’ progress on district tests related to EOCs. Again, passing scores on all End of Course Exams are required by the state of Texas to graduate from high school. Anyone wanting more information should contact a counselor or visit the website http://tea.texas.gov/student.assessment/staar.

Founded in 2009 by children’s author and public speaker, Melissa M. Williams, READ3zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. One of the primary creative projects at READ3Zero is the annual shortstory contest, which emphasizes the concept that reading and writing go hand in hand. The program provides leadership and speaking opportunities to the students after they are published. Children are also allowed to submit drawings for the front and back cover of the book. Organizations, businesses and community members are able to help fund the efforts of READ3Zero by contributing support for future projects. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
