MUZIK2HEAL The Brookwood Community citizens were all smiles on November 16, 2013 after attending an uplifting concert presented by the non-profit group Muzik2Heal. The contributing young musicians were John and Lucy Cao, Aidan Gettemy, Claire Kyoung, Ethan and Kevin Le and Spencer Taylor. They performed classical works such as “The Swan” by Saint-Saens, “Winter Wind” by Chopin and contemporary pieces such as “It Ain’t Necessarily So” by Gershwin and “A Whole New World” by Menken. It was a healing experience for both the audience and the performers.

SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Please remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, please scoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.

KATY ANIMAL CONTROL
Katy Animal Control works in conjunction with the Katy Police Department enforcing City and State laws. Lost pets are kept in a 3,000 sq. ft. temperature controlled, state-inspected building. The Katy Animal Shelter does not adopt out animals, therefore, it is extremely important that pets are licensed and vaccinated at six months of age. The department strives to make the licensing process as convenient as possible and can be scheduled by calling the shelter at 281-391-4740 or email dbrown@katypd.com. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and can be reached at 281391-4740 (all calls are logged and returned, so please leave a message). For after hour emergencies, please call the Katy Police Department at 281-391-4848. It is unlawful to dump animals at the shelter. Dogs and/or cats are not allowed to run at large on private property and must wear collar and tags at all times. Any person or entity raising, keeping and maintaining livestock and/or fowl on tracts of land larger than one acre shall obtain an annual permit from the city, except that no permit is required for single tracts of land larger than five acres. Live animal traps are available with a deposit and signed contract. PLEASE NOTE: This information applies only to the incorporated city limits of Katy. For lost pets in the areas of Fry Road, Mason Road, Grand Parkway, please contact the county animal shelters (Harris County 281-999-3191; Fort Bend County 281-342-1512; Waller County 979-826-8033) or contact Special Pals at 281-579-7387 (www.specialpalsshelter.org) or Citizens for Animal Protection at 281-497-0591 (www.cap4pets.org). PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF KELLIWOOD CELEBRATED VETERANS DAY WITH STUDENTS AT MCMEANS MIDDLE SCHOOL
In honor of Veterans Day, students from Primrose School of Kelliwood said thank you to Katy area veterans. The celebration was part of Primrose School of Kelliwood’s Balanced Learning®system, which offers activities related to positive character development in children. Primrose School of Kelliwood led the pledge of allegiance and joined the older students at McMeans Middle School to honor veterans from the Katy area. Veterans Day falls during the Primrose “Respect for Others” activities in the month of November. Character development is a component of the Primrose Schools Balanced Learning® system, which helps children understand concepts like friendship, generosity and honesty. Character development is the heart of the Primrose culture and is brought to life through many experiential learning opportunities at Primrose. Teaching respect for one another can have a profound effect on a child not only when they are young, but also as an adult.

Christin also conducted educational workshops at local libraries and informed people about how the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center takes in harmed animals and helps them recover strength, confidence and their natural habits. Christin demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, community involvement, time management and personal development in order to carry out her Gold Award project. As an active member of Girl Scouts for 9 years, Christin has also earned her Bronze and Silver Awards. Christin is currently a Junior at Cinco Ranch High School.

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
