Newsletter: The WoodCreek Reserve official Newsletter is published by Krenek Printing, 281-463-8649 or www.krenekprinting.com; this is a wonderful source of information regarding your community at no cost to you. Please contact them (news@krenekprinting. com) with your mailing information to receive this wealth of information. Friendly Katy Neighbors: Did you know that you can participate in Crime Watch as easily as being a “nosy neighbor?” If you have not already done so, talk to the neighbors next to you, across the street and down the street. Introduce yourself; get to know them and who lives in the household. Encourage them to do the same and pledge to watch out for each other. Don’t hesitate to report suspicious persons to the City of Katy Police or Fort Bend Co. Sheriffs and don’t assume someone else will do it. Reports from citizens are the best sources of information for law enforcement. They can best help us if we help them. Emergencies or crimes in progress should be immediately reported to “911.” Non-emergency calls should go to City of Katy Police at 281-391-4848 or Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. 281-341-4665. Community Volunteers: Our office would like to extend a warm thank you to the volunteers who currently serve and generously give their time to WoodCreek Reserve community. These volunteers are very helpful to the development of the community, as they represent their sections at WoodCreek Reserve CAI Board meetings. If you would like to volunteer to be a Section Leader or Co-Section Leader please contact our office at info@crest-management.com Board Meetings: Should you desire to receive notice of your community board meetings, go to www.crest-management.com, click on “communities,” then click on the link to your community and you may register there. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the homeowners of WoodCreek Reserve and are honored to be part of this exquisite neighborhood. SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Please remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, please scoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.
REMINDERS
Reminder that trashcans are to be stored out of public view, except for on designated trash days. This helps keep the community looking good.
KATY ANIMAL CONTROL
Katy Animal Control works in conjunction with the Katy Police Department enforcing City and State laws. Lost pets are kept in a 3,000 sq. ft. temperature controlled, state-inspected building. The Katy Animal Shelter does not adopt out animals, therefore, it is extremely important that pets are licensed and vaccinated at six months of age. The department strives to make the licensing process as convenient as possible and can be scheduled by calling the shelter at 281-391-4740 or email dbrown@katypd.com. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and can be reached at 281-391-4740 (all calls are logged and returned, so please leave a message). For after hour emergencies, please call the Katy Police Department at 281-391-4848. It is unlawful to dump animals at the shelter. Dogs and/or cats are not allowed to run at large on private property and must wear collar and tags at all times. Any person or entity raising, keeping and maintaining livestock and/or fowl on tracts of land larger than one acre shall obtain an annual permit from the city, except that no permit is required for single tracts of land larger than five acres. Live animal traps are available with a deposit and signed contract. PLEASE NOTE: This information applies only to the incorporated

• When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.
SPRING BREAK ROAD TRIPS!
Perhaps taking a family trip via plane isn’t a part of the spring break budget this year. No fear! Spending a few days away from Houston is as easy as packing up the car, getting the kids and picking a destination. Check out these ideas: Family road trip number 1: Austin. Under 3 hours from Katy by car with plenty of great food, history and fun. Family road trip number 2: Corpus Christi. This is an excellent destination for beaches, swimming and more. Family road trip number 3: New Braunfels (outside of Austin). This place is jam-packed with fun stuff for kids. Family road trip number 4: San Antonio. Head west on I-10 for 3 hours to arrive at this great Texas destination. Family road trip number 5: DFW. This Texas destination is just a straight shot north from Houston on I-45. Courtesy: chron.com

It is so easy to keep putting things in your secret pile in that room or area no one sees. But one day someone will notice! Be wise - organize! Here are some easy DIY tips: • Shoe Boxes as DIY Dividers: You can make a completely customizable set with just scissors and shoe boxes. Simply cut the boxes in half by length or width, as needed for your space, then tuck into a drawer. March 2016

• Picture Frames as Dry-Erase Board: Stay on top of your errands with an eye-catching DIY memo board: Frame a pretty scrap of fabric or wallpaper, hang in a high traffic area and use a dry-erase market to jot down reminders on the glass. • Stepladders as a Bedside Table: This minimalist take on a night table holds only the essentials-a lamp, a smartphone, water-forcing you to edit which items spend the night there. • Magnets as a Medicine Cabinet Organizer: Mount a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet door to store tweezers, bobby pins and other grooming tools in plain sight. • A Wine Rack as a Wall Organizer: Hang an unused wine rack on the wall of your garage or supply closet to stash rags, tools, extension cords and more odds and ends. House Sparrows and Starlings can take over your Purple Martin house. They can prevent Martins from nesting, destroy their eggs and kill nestlings. Do some research on the internet and find out how you can become a successful Purple Martin landlord. TWRC Wildlife Center is a Houston-based wildlife rehabilitation and education center available to anyone needing assistance with wildlife. Check our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or call 713-468-TWRC and don’t forget to donate so we can continue to help wildlife as we’ve done for 36 years.
THE SCOUTS ARE COMING
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center For some, there’s nothing more exciting than the arrival of the migratory bird, the Purple Martin. They are the largest of the North American swallows. Flying from South America where they winter, they faithfully return to the same locations every year. The first to arrive are called scouts and they are usually the older males. They are not looking for nesting areas but simply returning to where they nested before. The younger males follow and then the females arrive. Both sexes help build the nest, which will be home to 4 or 5 babies. As soon as the chicks leave the nest, the Martins start congregating in large flocks and roost together in preparation for their trip south. Have you ever heard anyone say, “Location, location, location?” This is especially true if you want to attract Purple Martins. They are colonial nesting birds, which means they occupy apartment-type houses. Since Purple Martins feed while in flight, they prefer their housing be placed in the open, away from human housing and trees. Did you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness.

Initially conceived as a way for Katy ISD employees at the administration building to help students and their families, Food for Families has burgeoned into a communitywide initiative that is now primarily supported by individual, private contributions. And for the first time, local eateries donated a portion of their proceeds during the inaugural “Food for Families Restaurant Week,” ultimately helping to provide gift cards for 40 families. Food for Families, a Katy ISD Partners in Education yearly initiative, unites our Katy ISD staff and community in holiday support for select students and their families. HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER “What’s wrong with this picture?” is the playful theme and question attached to each show in Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) 2015-2016 season. Entering its 10th mainstage season, HFAC orchestrated a line-up of all-encompassing shows that highlight the theatre’s award-winning musical expertise, all while enveloping theatre experiences full of odd, zany, mystical and dramatic turmoil audiences love. The first half of the season as follows: 2016 March 11th-April 3rd: “Harvey” What do you get when you mix a polite and friendly man with a strange, six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey? A sister who wants to commit her brother, but gets committed herself and a town comically turned upside down on the search for a mild-mannered hero and his invisible friend. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press.

We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.
