GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
BOARD MEETINGS
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored

circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
TRASH & RECYCLING INFORMATION Trash day is on Tuesday and you should place your trash
at the curb in the receptacle provided by Republic Waste. Please note you may also place lawn debris in trash bags and bundled and tied limbs at curb for pick up. Heavy trash day will also be on Tuesdays. There has been no change to the recycling schedule, which will remain on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. Republic Services is providing a blue 95-gallon cart for recycling. If you need a cart, please call Republic Services and they will provide one with no additional charge. • Set the cart within 5 feet from the curb by 7:00 AM • Wheel-side of cart should face home and the cart opening toward the street • Do not overfill the cart; the lid must be closed • Minimum distance of 3 feet from any obstacle (car, mailbox, heavy trash, etc.) Heavy trash will be collected Tuesday for those items that will not fit in your trash containers. • Heavy Trash: Appliances, hot water heaters, mattresses, heavy or large volumes of bagged yard waste and other white goods appropriate for disposal, shall be placed within five feet of the curbside and will be collected on the same day as your regular trash. • All branches and tree limbs must be cut to 4 foot lengths and tied in small bundles that can be lifted and handled by a single person. Bundles should be no larger than eighteen

REMINDERS
Reminder that trashcans are to be stored out of public view, except for on designated trash days. This helps keep the community looking good.
Please remember to care for your yard. A well maintained yard is not only pleasing to the eye, but also helps keep our neighborhood values up.
SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP
Please remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, please scoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.
KATY ANIMAL CONTROL
Katy Animal Control works in conjunction with the Katy Police Department enforcing City and State laws. Lost pets are kept in a 3,000 sq. ft. temperature controlled, state-inspected building. The Katy Animal Shelter does not adopt out animals, therefore, it is extremely important that pets are licensed and vaccinated at six months of age. The department strives to make the licensing process as convenient as possible and can be scheduled by calling the shelter at 281-391-4740 or email dbrown@katypd.com. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and can be reached at 281-391-4740 (all calls are logged and returned, so please leave a message). For after hour emergencies, please call the Katy Police Department at 281-391-4848. It is unlawful to dump animals at the shelter.

KATY ISD PROMISE TO READ
713-896-0074
We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES
November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. For more information, contact Tammy Stringer at tammyrstringer@katyisd.org or 281-396-2645.

KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five onehour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.
KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING

Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. All mentors must make a one school year commitment to a student and complete an application and background check. For more information, contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.
FORT BEND VOTING CENTERS This November 3rd, Fort Bend County will be changing the way we vote on Election Day. Voters will now be able to cast a ballot at any of 78 Vote Centers. In the past, they could only vote at one assigned polling location. About one third of the Election Day polling places are new, so voters are encouraged to visit the Fort Bend Election website, www.fortbendvotes.org in order to find a convenient voting location.
RECYCLE AT THE FT. BEND COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER! The Ft. Jacob is a member of Troop 584, a troop sponsored by the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ. In addition to being awarded the Eagle Scout rank, he has also successfully earned 38 merit badges, completed 162 hours of service, camped 126 nights and hiked over 230 miles. NATIONAL ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year. In support of families everywhere who are fighting this disease, consider stepping in and helping out by becoming an advocate, making a donation to Alzheimer’s research or by offering support to a patient or family caregiver.

SPECIAL NEEDS GROUPS ENJOY A DAY TOGETHER AT ST. PETER’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Two of Katy’s communities of adults with intellectual and physical disabilities gathered together August 13th at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. Adults from The Arc of Katy visited St. Peter’s special needs ministry Hearts Helping Others (H2O). They enjoyed a visit from the Journey Ice snow cone truck, which is operated by Everyday Opportunities, which serves children and adults diagnosed on the autism spectrum. H2O is a ministry of St. Peter’s that serves adults with intensive special needs, specifically those who have finished their secondary education and need additional assistance with life skills such as feeding, mobility and hygiene. H2O meets weekly at the church for socialization and communication opportunities. The Arc of Katy has grown tremendously over time and currently serves about 30 adults with a variety of intellectual disabilities. It provides a safe environment for participants to engage in social and physical activities. They currently meet at Camp Cinco, a Katy Family YMCA facility, four days a week.

NETWORK TEXAS HOSTED BENEFITS FOR SHIELD BEARER Network Texas, a unique business networking group that supports their members and the community, hosted two Parties with Purpose benefiting Shield Bearer on September 16th in Katy and October 21st in Tomball. Proceeds from these events directly benefit Shield Bearer’s human trafficking recovery and intimate partner violence prevention programs. Houston is the number one human trafficking hub in the country due to interstate access and the close proximity to the border and Port of Houston. Many victims of human trafficking are children and in desperate need of mental health services for trauma, addiction and depression. Intimate partner violence (also known as domestic violence or dating violence) is the most common cause of injury for women ages 18-44. As many as 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, which equates to more than 10 million people per year in the United States. The community is encouraged to learn more and get involved.

FALL LAWN CARE - QUICK TIP!
Fall brings back ideal growing conditions for your lawn. Cool nights, warm days, ample rainfall and morning dew are just about as good as it gets for grass. Now the lawn is ready to grow again and is looking for the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. Some experts will say this is the single most important lawn feeding of the year. Apply your final feeding of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food right before the winter months, when grass is prepping for a winter nap. This will strengthen roots and increase nitrogen storage for an early spring green up and a healthier lawn next year. Courtesy of scotts.com
THANKSGIVING - BY THE CALORIES!
The average American consumes approximately three times the recommended daily dose of calories on the nation’s favorite
turkey-stuffed holiday. If you can stomach it, here’s a look at Thanksgiving eating, by the numbers:
• 1,500: The amount of calories an average woman needs each day • 2,000: The amount of calories an average man needs each day • 3,000: The estimated amount of calories in a typical Thanks giving meal, including turkey, side dishes and dessert • 5,000 to 6,000: The estimated amount of calories people consume throughout Thanksgiving Day, roughly triple the recommended daily intake • 590: The amount of calories in an average serving of a tradi tionally prepared Thanksgiving turkey • 30: Grams of fat in an average serving of a traditionally prepared Thanksgiving turkey • 400: The amount of calories in a softball-sized serving of stuffing • 25: Grams of fat in a softball-sized serving of stuffing or “the amount of fat you’d gobble up in a large, fast food serving of french fries,” says Darlene Zimmerman at the Detroit Free Press • 323: The amount of calories in a small, lightbulb-sized slice of pumpkin pie • 456: The amount of calories in a small, lightbulb-sized slice of pecan pie • 90: Calories in a typical three-ounce glass of red wine • 3,500: The amount of calories needed for the body to create one extra pound of fat • 500 to 700: Calories that healthy dieters should aim for in their Thanksgiving meal, as recommended by health experts at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center • 60: The number of minutes it takes for a 150-pound person to burn 500 calories by jogging at a moderate pace, according to Livestrong.com. BLACK FRIDAY TIPS • The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good time. • The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store layout! • Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks! • Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make sure you get it early! • Check online: some deals can be had online without the inperson hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you double check! • Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday! Courtesy of marioarmstrong.com/blackfriday

DEER ANTLERS
sex.” These animals have female external genitalia, but have male organs (testicles) internally.
Male deer or bucks, grow and lose their antlers every year. The antlers begin growing in early spring and by late summer they are fully-grown. Deer antlers are one of the fastest growing tissues known to man and can grow up to ½ inch per day. While growing, which can take up to 4 months, they are covered in a soft, hairy skin called velvet. Velvet is a living tissue composed of a high concentration of nerve cells and blood vessels. Velvet provides protection, blood and nutrients to the antlers. Because of the increased nerve cells on the antlers, they become more sensitive to pain than any other part of the body. Bucks are quick to learn the exact location of their antlers and learn to negotiate their way through wooded areas to avoid contact with limbs and other structures that will cause them pain. In early fall, a hardened ring forms at the base of the antlers and the blood supply to the velvet is shut off. The deer will begin rubbing the velvet off in preparation for the rutting or mating season.
TWRC Wildlife Center’s mission is to promote environmental conservation through public education and rehabilitation of native Texas wildlife. If you’d like to know how you can get involved, call 713-468-TWRC or go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.
During rut, bucks want to show their dominance. Their antlers are used during sparring matches with other bucks. Early in the season, these matches are nothing more than some pushing and shoving but by the peak of the breeding season, they can turn into full-blown fights. After rut, the buck’s testosterone levels fall. This causes a weakening of the tissue and bone. The antlers simply fall off. There is no pain or discomfort to the animal. In a few weeks, the cycle begins again and new antlers will begin to grow.
The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. The chapter is part of a state-wide Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in 44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted projects on approximately 195,700 acres of habitat while also developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive trails. The Texas Master Naturalists program is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. For additional information, call 281-633-7033 or email mmcdowell@ag.tamu.edu.
BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER
An interesting fact is that there are antlered does. Yes, I said DOES. A doe with velvet covered antlers usually has normal female reproductive organs and can still produce fawns. Hardened antlers on a doe are almost always male pseudohermophrodites, which means the “condition in which an individual of one sex has external genitalia superficially resembling those of the other
