There is a lot of talk out there about empowerment, and in many contexts: from employee empowerment to women's empowerment and everything in between. But what does it really mean? Here I draw on research and knowledge of experts, and my own understanding and personal experience to hopefully shed some light on the topic. A Process Empowerment is a process. It is not a one time thing. Empowerment happens over time. It is a series of happenings that build on each other to reach the end result: a life lived as the individual has chosen to live. Change Empowerment is change. We assume that if someone wants to be empowered, they now feel power-less. Therefore something must change in order for empowerment to occur. The individual must change in some way in order for the external circumstances to change. It is a wonderful upward spiral of empowering changes: the individual gains new knowledge about his own power, he sets goals and achieves them, his confidence levels increase, he sets bigger goals, and so it goes on...... Gaining Control Empowerment is about gaining control over ones own life. It is about having power to make our lives what we want them to be. It is about making choices, and being able to bring those things to fruition. Multidimensional Empowerment is multidimensional. It happens on the sociological dimension; in relationships of all types. E.g. a wife may become empowered in an abusive relationship and decide to leave. It happens on the psychological dimension; within the individual. E.g. A person may decide to be happier, they find out how that can be done, and change their mindset. It happens on the economic dimension; when dealing with people's economic power. E.g. Giving people knowledge about how to be economically independent. Occurs On Many Levels
Empowerment can occur on many levels: within the individual, within the family, within a group and within a community. This is because we are all interconnected. We are all part of our world, and within that there are many sub-groups that we belong to. As each person is empowered there is a knock-on effect on others in the group. A Social Process There is a social process that occurs, it is like a journey. The more we understand ourselves, the more power we feel, the more positive changes we make and the more confident we feel, the more impact we have on those around us. Involves New Learning Empowerment involves gaining new knowledge and skills. "You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see the world anew." Albert Einstein We must learn about how the world works, including our internal world, in order to raise our level of consciousness so that we understand the power that we have and learn how to use it. Includes Raising Confidence Empowerment certainly includes an element of increasing a person's confidence, but it is only part of the story. As mentioned above, we need new knowledge and skills so our increased confidence can be put to good use. There's no point being confident, if you're confident on erroneous foundations (incorrect knowledge or assumptions). In Conclusion So, empowerment is a social process of change that helps people to gain control of their lives. It happens on multiple dimensions and on multiple levels and it involves gaining new knowledge and skills, which in turn raises levels of confidence and motivation and leads to empowering actions.
