In this time of economic tumult budgets are being cut and generally people have less money to spend. So, what about your website? Here are five ways in which you can make your website make more money, even during a global recession. 1. Make it accessible Make sure the content on your website is accessible. This might seem like an obvious point but it is one that is often overlooked. Visitors will leave a website if they can't digest the content properly. Make sure the text is of a legible size and colour and don't use huge chunks of it. People online scan content so brief bulleted lists work much better than wordy paragraphs. Ensure you use a consistent layout with a clear easy-to-navigate menu. Make sure you do not flout any conventions either. E.g. if all other eCommerce sites place their shopping basket in the top right hand corner, you should do it too. 2. Write the right copy Web copy is a facet of websites that most people get wrong. In fact, many companies take their corporate literature and place it online verbatim. Website visitors generally have short attentions spans and are very impatient. Capture their attention with striking headlines that promote your products and services via their unique selling point. Focus on what makes you stand out from the crowd and write your web copy based around the benefits to your potential customers, not the features. If you need help, a good copywriter is worth their weight in gold. 3. Make yourself contactable Make it as easy as possible for your potential customers to contact you: phone, email, snail mail, fax, contact form, live chat, etc. The primary function of your website is likely to get people to make an enquiry. Once they touch base with you, you can start the selling proper. Until that time, make contacting you idiot-proof. Place your email and phone number at the top and bottom of every single page and also include your contact details as much as possible within the web copy, ideally after every two paragraphs or so. 4. Make yourself findable Submit your website to as many directories as possible and invest a little money in search engine optimisation. Start a blog and write

articles your visitors will find interesting. Such content can spread quickly over the Internet, particularly when used in conjunction with social networking sites. 5. Start a newsletter Start collecting emails addresses. All you need is a simple email capture form; encourage visitors to sign up by entering them into a free prize draw or offering them a free giveaway (eBook, access to an article, etc). Use this ever-growing list to send out an email newsletter to further promote your products and services. Email marketing is very inexpensive and yields excellent results so is an ideal marketing activity in a recession, especially when compared to traditional advertising channels such as magazine advertising.
