“i have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can. never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead. passed years seem safe ones, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance.” –beryl markham, west with the night

INTRODUC TION

DESTINATION // Portfolio It’s the first trip I’ve taken in which the end wasn’t certain and all of the stops without an itinerary. If you had told me years ago as a young nurse that I would find myself here, I would have laughed at you. But that’s the thing about going somewhere or life as it were. The trip is not entirely at your control, but where you choose to get off and get on again is, and for that I am grateful. –Kris-Anna Mack, MFA 2016

JOURNALING

SHIFT // Thesis The process was long and required a lot of journaling, research gathering and reading cookbooks. After 4 journals of notes over the summer, the concept began to take place. The journals are now these kind of cool archives of all the thoughts about the project.

discovery: Using natural materials to explore the meaning of color took this discovery into the organic realm. Red colors nearly every emotion. Love shares an association with flowers, fun with many kisses, shy, a rumpled fabric and rage– a slashing of violent cuts. All of these explorations used organic materials which is an important connection to the expression of the emotion that these words seek to relate to. kris-anna mack

E XPLOR ATION

RAGE // A study To capture the feelings and thoughts of these words and their expressions, I had to really study the various things I associated with them– creating a sort of photographic composition of the word. From these photographic explorations, the ideas for the type experiments came.

It is never stuff y or pretentious and it is not just some rusty relic. It’s the past with modern purpose. discovery: Coppola’s fi lms are a study in aesthetics and tension. They are ethereal and all at once lonely. You get the sense that her subject, characters and the scenery are all struggling to reconcile themselves with one another. To create there sense of angst, the work of Andrew Wyeth seems to most capture the feelings her fi lms evoke. Her characters are always just out of reach, a touch desperate and trying to fi nd equilibrium or a foothold.
