I am from Idaho Falls where I spent most of my time outside playing in the wild on the weekends and exploring the built environment during the day. After high school I set out to explore Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada on my own. I then moved to Lewiston, ID to attend trade school for auto body repair at Lewis-Clark State College. From there I chose to explore more higher education, getting my degrees in Art and Engineering at LCSC. Eventually I found myself at Washington State University studying Engineering but looking for another option, I found Architecture. From the beginning I felt that architecture is the perfect mix of the technical and artistic skills that I have been searching for. I entered the professional world of design in 2019 with TCF Architecture in Tacoma WA. I spent two years there learning lessons that can only be taught through working on projects with a professional team. Included here are some examples of my professional and academic work along my journey in architecture.

The site drafting and design took significant effort working with the project architects as well as several consultants such as landscape architect,civil, and others. Because of the scale of the project, the site Revit model required constant attention managing links to all the individual building models and consultant models to maintain the most up-to-date and accurate information. RCDI is an interdisciplinary organization within the SDC that works on design projects with rural communities in the area. This organization allows students to work with real clients on real projects that the communities want help with. RCDI provides many services that are useful to the community to get beyond the predesign phase so that they can move on with grant applications and gaining additional support. The primary student activities include research, conducting public workshops, producing draft drawings and other documentation, and other predesign services under the guidance of a few WSU faculty who direct the RCDI and its projects.

Regional Economic Administrative Civic Hub Kinshasha & Brazzaville

This was a research heavy project with an emphasis on borders and how design can create or eliminate boundaries whether physical, social, economic, or otherwise implied. I chose this region because it was almost completely unknown to me before beginning so my hope was to remain as neutral as possible and only focus on creating a design to support the local community. As expected there are many factors that would impact this project so I focused on three that would influence the most people in their day to day lives. Transportation, economics and trade, and a regulated river crossing for safety and diplomacy.
Form Inspiration Kinshasha
A view from the pedestrian path close to the public market looking out over the public circle and across to Brazzaville. This platform is ideal for public events for both Congo-Brazza and CongoKinshasha citizens to enjoy. This view from the ferry looking back at Kinshasha shows how the super structure lies low close to the water as to not obstruct the view across from either city. The Kinshasian market plaza circle protrudes into an arc creating a point for the architecture to pivot around.

The Flex house This studio project was focused on collaboration between the studio class as a, the local business owners, and community members of Garland district in Spokane WA. My team created a co-op building that would house budding small businesses as well as provide the equipment and place for the community to gather and become more united. The key amenities the building features are a large fabrication workshop and industrial kitchen on the ground floor, garden and green house space on the roof, and flexible office/business rooms in between.

Walking through Casa Batllo is like walking along the ocean shore, each step a discovery of sight and experience for your body, yet every surface and texture are carefully crafted to suit its purpose. The walk up the staircase, from the entrance to the first floor was completely satisfying, feeling the wood rail in my hand and transitioning up from a cave-like room into a high-ceilinged hall with wood accents all around, every sensation seems to have been given thought. This diagram was created to express the forms that created the most tactilely memorable moments along the path I took through the house.

The historic building’s section is quite beautiful and rich with traditional architectural features while the new addition’s section is a wealth of abstract angles and dizzying shifts. When standing in the new addition it is easy to forget that just a moment before you were standing in a classical and wholly symmetrical historical building. Libeskind’s design seems to intentionally make the occupant feel slightly uncomfortable and off center, the tilt of the walls seems to reference the crookedness of the content displayed inside. This museum’s focus is on the human experience of war, the expositions do not simply name generals and state the outcomes. The texture, smell, and weight of the conflicts are on display to be experienced.
