Annual Report 2022

THE BHAKTIVEDANTA BOOK TRUST
“Simply read my books and repeat what I have written then your preaching will be perfect.”
(Śrīla Prabhupāda, September 1975)

The year in review

“Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa. Preach as much as possible. By saṅkīrtana, big saṅkīrtana. Big saṅkīrtana is book distribution and small saṅkīrtana is with mṛdaṅga. Big saṅkīrtana is going on all over the world. Small saṅkīrtana locally. Overflood the demons׳ godless civilization. Our declaration of war against this godless civilization.” (Śrīla Prabhupāda, December 1976)

Distribution in the NE BBT area

“Every house should have our books – every gentleman, in any language, it doesn׳t matter. That is our propaganda. Now you are getting all languages, so we can capture the whole world.״

(Śrīla Prabhupāda, February 1977)

“There is no doubt about it, to distribute books is our most important activity. The temple is a place not for eating and sleeping, but as a base from which we send out our soldiers to fight with maya. Fight with maya means to drop thousand and millions of books into the lap of the conditioned souls … That is the actual process of Krishna Consciousness. To train others continue this programme so that in the future every devotee in our movement will know the art of distributing books.”

The Armenian Bhagavad-gītā As It Is

The Kyrgyz Bhagavad-gītā As It Is

Bhagavad-gītā As It Is in the Kyrgyz language is almost ready for printing. Kyrgyzstan is a small Islamic republic in Central Asia, with a population of close to 7 million people. The country was hard-hit by the COVID lockdown, but the preaching has continued and devotees look forward to having Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Bhagavad-gītā in their hands for their own reading and for distribution.

The Mongolian Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers

The Mongolian translation of Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers was released this spring and is now being distributed around the country. The Mongolian edition is the 60th translation of this popular title.

On the right: Book distribution in rural Mongolia.

Albanian Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers

Kṛṣṇa consciousness has continued to grow in Albania since devotees returned to the country to preach about eight years ago. Last autumn, at the request of Trilokātmā Dāsa, who is actively preaching in Albania, Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers was translated and printed and is now available for distribution.

In the 1980s, the Armenian translation of Bhagavad-gītā As It Is was sponsored by an Armenian disciple of Śrīla Prabhupāda living in France. There were very few Armenian devotees in those days, so the work was done by a nondevotee professional translator. This edition has been out of print for quite some years, and the now vibrant Armenian congregation is working on a new edition of the Gītā. We expect it to be ready for printing later in the year.

The BBT art scanning project

On behalf of the Global BBT, the NE BBT continues to have BBT art cleaned and scanned.

Detroit

Bhaktin Renata, a Lithuanian devotee living near the Detroit temple, and a professional art conservationist with decades of experience, offered to take four particularly dirty or damaged paintings and restore them before the scanning. This will

allow us to get the best results digitally. All four paintings are classics – for example, Bharadraja Dāsa’s Kṛṣṇa book painting of the Yadus bathing at Kurukṣetra during a solar eclipse, and his and other artists’ painting of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s ecstatic dreaming of the rāsa dance.

There’s also Jadurāṇī Dāsī’s painting for the Third Canto of Lord Brahmā and the secondary creation, which has been hanging

for years between the temple room and what was once the restaurant kitchen. This one in particular requires a much deeper cleaning due to the heavy coating of incense soot and kitchen grease. The fourth painting is an early “Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa on a swing” painting, copied from an Indian print. The painter had used a natural varnish, which had yellowed over the years and seriously affected the painting’s colors. This varnish also had

24 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

developed a layer of grime. Renata removed the grime first, and then the varnish. Once these thick, darkening layers were removed, she could see a few

areas that required touch-up. She then revarnished the painting. Once the painting is returned to the temple wall, it will have been returned to its original colors, and we will get a better, brighter scan.

Renata also worked on the painting depicting Lord Caitanya’s dream, which had a number of stress cracks. Stress cracks can occur when paintings are hung without a backboard or are handled – sometimes knocked into a door handle from the back as the canvas is being carried or bumped in some other way. Stress cracks are fixed in multiple steps, and then the painting

has to be revarnished. Renata completed her work on both of these paintings, and they are now ready for highest-resolution Cruse scanning. The other two will take more time to clean and restore before we have them scanned.

In the meantime, Renata also found two more paintings at the Detroit temple we hadn’t noticed before. Both need only a light cleaning to remove surface dust since they’ve been hanging in an upstairs temple office. The dasāvatara was painted for the Bhagavad-gītā in the early 1970s, and the beautiful painting of Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna on the chariot is from 1979, painted by Jadurāṇī Dāsī. These will join the two restored paintings and be scanned in July.

Boston

ISKCON Boston, once home to ISKCON Press and the place where Śrīla Prabhupāda first established the BBT Art Department, is naturally also home to a number of the first

The art scanning project 25 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

paintings done in ISKCON. We were unable to work with these paintings due to the COVID lockdown, and in the meantime, the Boston devotees found a skilled devotee who could clean and restore the temple art. His name is Hema Gour Dāsa, a disciple of Satsvarūpa Mahārāja living in Pennsylvania. Hema Gour is himself a talented artist, with experience in art restoration. He’s now in his 80s and retired from his long career as an art professor at a Pennsylvania university. We very much appreciate that he has volunteered his time and

expertise to help prepare the Boston art for scanning.

To date, several paintings have been completed, and several more are being packed up to be taken to Hema Gour. Once this work is done, we will take all the paintings and get them scanned.

Below is a work by Jadurāṇī Dāsī, painted in 1969 under Śrīla Prabhupāda’s direction, and one of the next on Hema Gour’s list.

In times of challenge

An interview with Acyutapriya Dāsa, ISKCON Zonal Supervisor for the Ukraine

BBT: What are the devotees in the Ukraine experiencing and how is the preaching going during the war?

Acyutapriya Dāsa: Well, it’s like many things – you can never get a full picture of it unless you’ve been through it. It’s a time of serious challenge, obviously. It’s like leaving your body while still being in your body, because war breaks your many gross and subtle connections with everything material in your world – whatever you have used for your material support, your attachments and comforts, all your mental and physical resources – it ultimately leaves you only with Kṛṣṇa.

In practical terms, many devotees have had to leave their homes, communities, yātrās, and

services; devotees have lost family members, jobs, cars … their material lives have been ruined. Many have been forced to relocate – some to areas within the Ukraine, some to other countries. What we’ve realized is that we have nothing to hold on to except Kṛṣṇa, our sādhana, and the preaching mission. And we’ve learned that preaching during war is possible. Projects and temples may not be as available in a war situation, but for those who have the strength and will to do it, it’s always possible to share Kṛṣṇa consciousness with others and to practice one’s daily sādhana

BBT: In general, how are the devotees handling it?

Acyutapriya Dāsa: There’s no one answer – we’ve seen everything from emotional breakdowns to remaining very staunch. Some devotees chose to leave the country; others chose to stay. Officially, men are not allowed to leave the country unless they have three or more children or are invalid or over sixty years

old. Some families have chosen to send the wives and children abroad while the husbands remain behind. That’s been hard on many.

But because ISKCON in the Ukraine has always held tightly to devotee care, we’ve managed to survive as a devotional community – even in cities that have suffered heavily, such as Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Kyiv.

For example, at the end of 2021 we had just under a hundred nāma-haṭṭa groups in the Ukraine. By the end of 2022, we still had seventy-two groups in Kyiv alone. This says a lot about the resilience of the devotees in the Ukraine – devotees are helping one another and coming together to chant and read and discuss Kṛṣṇa conscious philosophy; they’re helping one another socially, emotionally, and materially. And especially because of the generous help of devotees from all over the world, we’ve been able to offer financial aid to thousands of Ukrainian

27 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

devotees. Some have needed serious medical care and some have lost close family members –so many have needed financial support to survive.

As a community, we’ve been trying to focus on book distribution and Food-for-Life. In just one year we distributed over a million plates of prasāda to refugees. Many people whose homes were destroyed have been living in subway stations or even on the subway trains. We’re trying to provide them with prasāda

BBT: You mentioned that during the 2022 Prabhupāda marathon the devotees there distributed more books than in the previous year.

Acyutapriya Dāsa: People are open to hearing about Kṛṣṇa consciousness. It’s not that they’ve become suddenly more pious, but war makes people understand the need for spirituality. They’re tired and depressed. The war here is a tragedy for millions of people –people who have not been touched by war for many years –so it’s natural for them to look for answers and for something positive in their lives. In most cities we’re still holding harināmas, and people come out for them. It makes them feel positive.

Inevitably, this war is drawing the Ukrainian people together in ways I’ve never seen before. In general they’re becoming both more conscious and more socially responsible, and that creates a good atmosphere for book distribution.

Most Ukrainians never expected that we would be at war with

Russia. We were one of the republics of the Soviet Union; we were one country, speaking the same language. Although almost all Ukrainians speak the Ukrainian language, most people in the cities speak Russian in their day-to-day lives. We’ve been distributing both Russian- and Ukrainian-language books here for years. Now it is forbidden to distribute Russian books. Part

Bhāgavatam in Ukrainian. We have Caitanya-caritāmṛta already done in a good translation. The Bhagavad-gītā needs to be republished, and there are a number of other books that were translated in the 1990s that need editorial polish or better translations, even. We would like to gradually get the entire library of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books in Ukrainian. We have gathered a

of the coming together of the Ukrainian people is a desire to embrace the Ukrainian language as the national tongue. So the devotees have realized that we need to get more Ukrainian titles for distribution and for our own reading.

BBT: A few months ago we printed three small Ukrainian books – Easy Journey, Perfection of Yoga, and Rāja-vidyā – and these are now being distributed. We are also working on the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam set, most of which is being translated for the first time. What are your plans for distribution?

Acyutapriya Dāsa: Before the war we had 15,000 practicing devotees in the Ukraine. They’re going to need Ukrainian books for themselves, too. We’re trying to supply them with the Śrīmad-

skilled team of translators, editors, and proofreaders, expertly managed by Bhakta Andriy Lytvyn. Despite the war they’re getting the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam set done, working on several cantos at the same time. Cantos 1 and 2 are almost ready for printing. Aside from providing them to the devotees in the Ukraine, we’re also trying to find ways to distribute sets.

BBT: We’d like to give a big thank-you to Vasudāmā Prabhu and Bhakta Andriy, as well as to all the devotees serving on the editorial teams. It’s truly amazing what they’re accomplishing under such difficult circumstances.

Acyutapriya Dāsa: Thank you to the BBT for placing Ukrainian production so high on your priority list.

Acyutapriya Dāsa 28 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

What war? We,re translating the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam

An interview with Bhakta Andriy Lytvyn

BBT: Andriy, you’ve been doing such wonderful service in managing the editorial team that’s come forward to serve the BBT by getting the full Ukrainian Bhāgavatam translated and ready for printing. You also told me you’ve been studying Bhaktivaibhava for four years, with two years left before you finish. What language have you been studying in?

Andriy: The course has been in Russian. I’ve read the

Bhāgavatam through in Russian at least twice, but I’ve read the First Canto in Ukrainian, which is my mother tongue. I loved reading both the First Canto and the Caitanya-caritāmṛta in Ukrainian – the translator, Ādipuruṣa Dāsa, made the language quite rich, and when you read such well-translated books you don’t only get new philosophical ideas but your devotional vocabulary is built. I remember when I read the Ukrainian First Canto for the first time seeing words I’d never used before. I had to ask senior devotees what was meant

by them, and I found myself thinking, “I’ve never thought about this in this way before.” That’s part of my inspiration to help get Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books translated into good Ukrainian. The experience of reading such literature in your native language is quite an attractive one.

And now with the war on, many devotees are switching from Russian to Ukrainian even for routine communication. It’s natural, then, that we’re also wanting to read Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books in Ukrainian.

29 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

BBT: We’re happy to see so much focus on translating the full Bhāgavatam. How did you get involved with this project? Could you describe how the editorial team came together?

Andriy: Everything started in September last year when Acyutapriya Dāsa announced that we would start translating the rest of the Śrīmad-Bhagavatam. Even though I don’t have an education in philology, I wanted to help, so I asked what I could do. I’m trained in project management, so it seemed natural to try to be of service in that way.

We began by advertising for persons with language skills, and many devotees came forward. After speaking to them, we distributed skill tests. If someone spoke good English, we tested their ability to translate. Some devotees did the tests and others dropped out or didn’t do well enough to be on the team, but we still ended up with about fifty devotees.

Since then, some devotees have had to give up their service because they’ve had to relocate or for other reasons. Some found themselves less capable of the work than they had expected. Overall, I think of Prabhupāda’s advice to “boil the milk.” It feels like our team has become more “condensed” now, but even so, we still have over twenty active devotees involved.

We have a small group of coordinators for the project, and we have an editorial board,

with experienced translator, editor, and Bhāgavatam teacher, Ādipuruṣa Dāsa, at its head. We have a group chat set up for the full team. We also have regular Friday calls where we discuss the work along with any issues that have arisen. During these calls, our more experienced devotees make presentations about an aspect of translation or editing, and then answer questions from the others.

The coordination team tracks what each devotee is working on, what’s been accomplished, and what’s still to be done, along with any questions and their

then becomes part of the group resource, shared with everyone.

BBT: This is a pretty thorough system. Using it, you’re managing to work on multiple cantos at the same time, and it sounds like you have systems in place to assure the quality of the work.

Andriy: The First Canto will be ready for printing by the end of June, and the Second Canto is going through final editorial checks and will soon be ready for your layout team. Other cantos are in various stages of translation or editing.

solutions, and we distribute this information to everyone on the editorial team. Then, if someone has a question, they can check the document they’ve received, and if the answer isn’t there, they can write first to the group chat, and then to the editorial board for an answer. That response

BBT: We’d like to thank all the devotees who are serving this effort. It’s wonderful to work with all of you.

Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers in the Tuvan language

Outside Russia, it’s likely that few devotees have heard of the Republic of Tuva, located in south-central Siberia, or its language, Tuvan (Tyvan), a member of the Turkic family of languages, with many of its roots adopted from Mongolian, Tibetan, and Russian. The writing system has, in the span of a century, moved from a Mongolian script to a Latin script to Cyrillic.

Translator Sat Aylan Anai-oolovna shared with us the history of the development of Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers in Tuvan, and about sharing Kṛṣṇa consciousness in her region.

Aylan came to Kṛṣṇa consciousness in 2008 in her home city of Kyzyl. In 2012, Bhaktivaibhava Mahārāja visited Kyzyl and encouraged her to translate one of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books into Tuvan. The devotees decided on Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers – it was short enough to be a good first project.

At that time, there were about thirty active devotees, most of whom lived in the ashram and attended all the devotional programs, and perhaps fifty congregational members who regularly attended preaching programs and other such

events. More were coming to attend various harināmas and festivals. Aylan herself was living in the ashram at the time, and within a year she finished her translation of Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers. She handed the manuscript to then-yātrā leader Madana-mohiṇi Devī Dāsī to arrange for the editing, and in 2013, Aylan went to India, where she remained until 2021.

Aylan explains, “I didn’t really know what happened to the manuscript after I left, but when I returned to Tuva in 2022, I learned that the editing work had never been completed because the devotee who had been

assigned to do it, Dalāi Dāsa, had left his body. After Dalāi Dāsa’s death, no one else picked up the work, because by then, Madanamohiṇi had moved to another region. So when I returned from India the Tuvan devotees asked me to finish the book. I’ve now completed the work and given the files to the BBT for layout.”

The devotional community in Tuva changed while Aylan was in India. For example, when Madana-mohiṇi moved to a neighboring republic, most of the active devotees followed her there. Now there are only about ten devotees in the city of Kyzyl and only three initiated devotees in all of Tuva. The congregation currently consists of about twenty or thirty regular attendees. All the devotees in Tuva work – Aylan herself is a

school teacher – and practice their sādhana at home.

Since everyone in Tuva speaks the state language, Russian, why print a book in Tuvan? Aylan says, “Russian is like the stepmother language, but Tuvan is the mother. There is a difference in the way a language resonates with your heart. When you read a book in your mother tongue, its words are so much more welcome and pleasant.

The people of the Republic of Tuva are traditionally Tibetan Buddhists, and Aylan says they accept the Four Noble Truths, have faith in God, and a culture compatible with Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the way they respect elders and rise early in the morning to bathe and perform their spiritual practices.

The Tuvan people were originally a nomadic, herder culture and not traditionally vegetarian, but they like to hear spiritual topics, attend festivals and public lectures, and accept prasāda Aylan hopes that when the Tuvan edition of Perfect Questions, Perfect Answers arrives, the people will embrace the opportunity to read more about Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Facing new challenges

An interview with Gaura Krishna Dāsa

BBT: How are the devotees in Russia meeting the current challenges caused by the war?

Gaura Krishna Dāsa: Śrīla Prabhupāda was right when he said over fifty years ago, “If there is war, there will be great calamity.” We are seeing great calamity all over the world, not only in Europe – there’s so much suffering everywhere. Years ago, when many of us joined the movement in the former Soviet Union, we felt the world was close to catastrophe and were eager to save it by giving Kṛṣṇa consciousness to as many people as possible. We distributed as many of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books as we could

and spread the holy name. Over time we’ve relaxed a bit, but now we’re again reminded that what Śrīla Prabhupāda said was accurate: people who forget that everything belongs to God will act in “I” and “mine” consciousness and cause so much dissension.

As Śrīla Prabhupāda also said, “You may make advancement of civilization, scientific improvement, economic development, but if it is godless, at any moment it will be finished. At any moment.” This is not news, of course; it’s the influence of Kali-yuga.

We’ve seen devotees all over the world debating the relative details of the current situation on social media. It’s easy to form opinions, but hard to know the facts as those living through war or any other difficult situation experience them. So let’s not spend time debating what’s reported on social media or even in the news. That’s not real life or truth, and it generally creates useless dissension or distrust among devotees. All these divisive social media discussions are kutīnātī, simply discussing what’s wrong with the world. It destroys the trust between us.

33 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

If we don’t trust one another, how can we help one another or anyone else?

BBT: That’s an important point.

Gaura Krishna Dāsa: In Russia, we’re facing new challenges, but we’re continuing our service and the preaching and book production and distribution. One realization I’ve had during this time is how important Vaiṣṇava qualities like mercy, tolerance, truthfulness, and selflessness are, and how we should always be serious in our Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

I’d like to read what Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote in his preface to the Bhāgavatam: “Human society, at the present moment, is not in the darkness of oblivion. It has made rapid progress in the fields of material comforts, education, and economic development throughout the entire world. But there is a pinprick somewhere in the social body at large, and therefore there are large-scale quarrels, even over less important issues. There is need of a clue as to how humanity can become one in peace, friendship, and prosperity with a common cause. ŚrīmadBhāgavatam will fill this need, for it is a cultural presentation for the respiritualization of the entire human society.

“Disparity in human society is due to lack of principles in a godless civilization. There is God, or the Almighty One, from whom everything emanates, by whom everything is maintained and in

whom everything is merged to rest. Material science has tried to find the ultimate source of creation very insufficiently, but it is a fact that there is one ultimate source of everything that be. This ultimate source is explained rationally and authoritatively in the beautiful Bhāgavatam, or Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the transcendental science not only for knowing the ultimate source of everything but also for knowing our relation with Him and our duty toward perfection of the human society on the basis of this perfect knowledge. It is powerful reading matter in the Sanskrit language, and

Over and above this, the reader will be able to convert others to accepting God as a concrete principle.”

The mission of the BBT, of book printing and the distribution of transcendental literature in the form of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books, is to offer everyone and anyone the opportunity to come in contact with this spiritual science. We are fortunate to have been given such focus by our founderācārya, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

BBT: Thank you and all the devotees there for your dedicated service to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books and mission.

it is now rendered into English elaborately so that simply by a careful reading one will know God perfectly well, so much so that the reader will be sufficiently educated to defend himself from the onslaught of atheists.

Here are some services we’d love to have your help with (training provided):

• Proof-hear and/or sound-check audiobooks. No experience necessary, but a love for intensive hearing and a good ear for language required.

• Help us prepare books in your language for printing, ebook conversion, and uploading to VedaBase.io. We have a handful of tasks available from file conversion to making sure the text is in good shape before further work is done. Basic familiarity with a computer and the ability to pay attention to detail required.

• Proofread ebooks in your language. We’re looking for devotees who can agree to a

friendly deadline, and who are willing to read while watching for conversion or other types of errors (list of things to watch for provided).

• Beta-test apps as they’re developed. All you need is a phone.

• Got a scanner? We often need good-quality text scanning and OCRing.

• Narrate an audiobook in your language, or recruit someone you know to do it. We’ll provide the BBT’s Audiobook Guidelines to help get you started.

• The Editorial Audit Trail project (see p. 45) needs everything from typists to devotees who understand machine learning.

• We need photos – good quality images taken of holy places in India, and at festivals, harināmas, Ratha-yātrās,

devotional retreats, of book distribution, the Deities, and all sorts of events.

If any of this sounds interesting and you have a little time, please contact us at volunteers@bbt.se When you write, let us know what you’re interested in so we can direct you to the right person on our team.

The best thing is to have new pictures in all the books rather than having repeats from old books in the new books. And the covers, if possible, should always be the same for each respective book regardless of what language it may be printed in.”

The amazing print/ebook/audiobook combo

There are two main reasons for the print/ebook/audiobook combo concept:

1. To supply the ebook or audiobook (or both), free of charge, to the buyer of the printed book. Many people like to have a print book at home and an ebook for traveling, or an audiobook they can listen to in the car.

2. Book distributors sometimes meet with “I only read ebooks” or “I don׳t have time to read books. Do you have this as an audiobook?” Devotees can now distribute ebooks and audiobooks along with print books in one go at no additional cost to the temples or to the person buying the book.

Anyone who buys a print book gets the ebook and/or the audiobook (if it׳s available for the title) free of charge. Book distributors tell us they love this concept. In one swoop they can reach the entire spectrum of readers no matter what kind of a reading experience someone wants – on paper, on an ebook reader or computer, tablet, mobile phone, or played over a car stereo.

And if people say, “What am I going to do with a print book after I get my preferred version

of it?” the book distributor can suggest that they put it on their bookshelf for future reading, donate it to a prison or library, or wrap it up nicely and give it to a friend or family member as a gift.

We would love to hear from you. If you have ideas how to expand or improve this concept, please contact us at ideas@bbt.se.

A great way to distribute ebooks and audiobooks

How it works

On the back cover of the printed books there is a line that states that the book includes the ebook, or both the ebook and the audiobook.

2 On the copyright page we provide a URL and a redemption code, as well as a QR code for direct download.

The URL links to bbtmedia.com, where readers enter their redemption code, and a few seconds later they have the ebook/audiobook on their computer or other device. The QR code automates some of these steps.

BBTmedia.com

Over the year we’ve been gearing bbtmedia.com to work more seamlessly with the Affiliate Program (pp. 41–42), finding the holes in the site’s user experience and improving it to make it more efficient, with a much better site interface for phones and tablets. Users will now experience a quicker, more seamless way to purchase or redeem digital products, and will see:

• faster loading times

• digital receipts that include purchase data along with a download button and scannable QR code

• translation of product information – titles, book descriptions, excerpts, and author information in the language in which the book is published

• audiobook samples

• choice between light or dark themes

• live support chat

To make downloading of and listening to BBT audiobooks a friendlier process, we’ve created the BBT Audio Library app, available currently for iOS, iPadOS, and Android, and this summer, for macOS and web browsers. This BBT audio player will allow users to stream or download audiobooks purchased from bbtmedia.com

Those with redemption codes for audiobooks will be able to use the app to scan their QR code or type it in and instantly redeem their product.

This combination of options will allow customers to listen to their audiobooks directly in the BBT

Audio Library app, in another audio player of their choice, or while logged in to their account at bbtmedia.com.

Both the bbtmedia.com site and the BBT Audio Library app will track sales by individual affiliates or affiliate groups, making digital saṅkīrtana simpler.

Later plans for the BBT Audio Library app include adding an ebook reader, enabling users to keep, read, and listen to all their

Digital Media 40 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

The Affiliate Program

Another great way to distribute ebooks and audiobooks

We are developing an affiliate program designed to facilitate ISKCON temples, projects, saṅkīrtana teams, and individual devotees adding distribution of the digital editions of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books to their preaching. We’re now very close to beta testing.

Here׳s how it works:

1. Individuals or projects (temple saṅkīrtana teams or other groups) register for an affiliate account at bbtmedia.com. We will have simple approval criteria.

2. Once approved, new affiliates will be issued unique identifiers –a number connected to their affiliate account. This number can

be distributed through QR codes on business cards, mobile phones, or on a website, or there may be other ways to distribute them, devised by individual distributors.

For those selling BBT digital products through a website or mobile app, affiliates can display the ebooks and audiobooks on their site, and include links or QR codes that take purchasers

to bbtmedia.com, but linked to their affiliate account so they are credited for the sales.

For those who wish to use business cards, the BBT will be designing a few businesscard templates to choose from. The cards could carry a short description of a product, if desired, or an explanation to purchasers of how the

41 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

card serves as a coupon for a particular product or any product at bbtmedia.com. Affiliates will need to insert their personal data into the card templates and then have the cards printed. These cards can be a handy way for those who distribute books on the street or at book tables to connect digital purchasers with the products. Cards can be handed out almost anywhere, and they can also be left, say, at bookstores or at temple bookstalls or anywhere that would allow cards to be placed for people to find and take.

The QR codes we or the affiliates generate with bbtmedia.com links will send purchasers to bbtmedia.com, but linked to the affiliate׳s account. The QR codes can be linked to specific products or to the home page of bbtmedia. com. But even codes that link to a particular product – perhaps the distributor wants to push

the Bhagavad-gītā that month –purchasers will still be able to leave the Gītā page and browse the site. Any purchases made during that session will still be linked to the affiliate׳s account and the affiliate credited for the sale. We hope this will give affiliates the freedom to design their own distribution priorities but also not lose out on further sales the purchaser may choose to make.

We have more ideas about how to make the system flexible for both affiliates and purchasers that we׳ll be exploring during beta testing.

3. Whenever a purchaser buys something with an affiliate׳s identifier, that purchase is automatically registered and

the payments calculated and recorded in the affiliate׳s account in real time. Affiliates will always have access to their account from a computer or mobile phone to see their sales record and balance and, if they׳ve chosen the option, their book points.

4. Affiliates will receive 30% of the retail price. They will need to have some practical way of getting paid for their distribution, and we will discuss what affiliates will need to receive payments in the approval process document, available to those who apply.

5. For those who desire, book points can be calculated from within an affiliate׳s account and sent to the Saṅkīrtana Newsletter. We are now looking for beta testers, with beta testing to begin within the next three months. If you׳d like to be a tester, please contact Kaiśorī Devī Dāsī at affiliate@bbt.se

Global BBT news

The Source-Text Repository update

The Source-Text Repository is a Global BBT project, created and run by the NE BBT׳s IT team, to provide all BBT divisions with clean, fidelity-checked files for Śrīla Prabhupāda׳s books in English.

This year we have added fidelity-checked, proofread files for most of the smaller mass-distribution titles. We’ve also been proofreading the Devanāgarī and transliterated verses and all other Sanskrit in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and in the next several months will be adding Cantos 1, 2, 3, and 6. Cantos 11 and 12 are also in process.

The texts uploaded to the Source-Text Repository are version-controlled – meaning, if we need to enter corrections into the English files after you have received them for a project, we will be able to supply a corrections list simply by comparing versions and creating a change set.

Global BBT News 44 NE BBT Annual Report 2022

Documenting the editing of Śrīla Prabhupāda,s works

The Editorial Audit Trail

Currently, the Editorial Audit Trail (EAT) is working on gathering, sorting, digitizing, and building a repository of book manuscripts, source documents, correction sheets, standards documents, interviews with Śrīla Prabhupāda׳s editors, typists, proofreaders, and others involved in taking his books from manuscript to finished product, along with other historical support documents, to be used for search and comparison, cross-referencing, and other forms of tracking.

Nowadays, new English-language edits or proofreading corrections are tracked in the BBT’s growing source-text repository; the EAT, however, focuses on the editing of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books from the time he first turned over his

written or typed text (or from the first available source material) and tracks its progress through to first printing and on through subsequent editions. Between the EAT and the source-text repository we expect to build a fairly complete record.

Building an editorial history for so many books is careful work. The vast majority of editing and proofreading corrections were done between the first transcript and the first printing, meaning that most of this work was done before the BBT started tracking corrections. So now we need to compare source documents with one another and with first and important editions through to the most current edition; and we need to look at other sources of corrections, such as correction sheets and Śrīla Prabhupāda’s correspondence, to get a more complete understanding of what

editing was done and what edits were actually used. We are also looking at interview material and correspondence between editors to gather more context.

Although most of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s main books already have brief histories established, and several already have some or all of the necessary source material and timelines, much work still needs to be done. The texts need to be easily viewable and the edits clearly seen, to start with, and then added to a database. This requires that the materials be digitized.

The EAT is a long-term and important project. If you have training in machine learning, or are a typist or a proofreader and would like to volunteer, please contact Ananta Kṛṣṇa Dāsa at volunteers@bbt.se

“There is no literature throughout the universe like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. There is no comparison. There is no competition. Every word is for the good of the human society.… each and every word. Therefore we stress so much in the book distribution. Somehow or other, if the book goes in one hand, he will be benefited…. If he reads one śloka, his life will be successful…. Therefore we are stressing so much, ‘Please distribute book, distribute book, distribute book.’ A greater mṛdaṅga. We are chanting, playing our mṛdaṅga. It is heard within this room or little more. But this mṛdaṅga will go home to home, country to country, community to community.”

(Śrīla Prabhupāda, January 1975)

In memoriam

Īśvareśvara Prabhu (Ivan Cherkelov) was the son of a famous Bulgarian actor. He had a promising career as a film director, but left it in 1991 to join the ISKCON temple in Sofia full-time. He performed a variety of services, including cooking and lecturing on Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books. In 1995 he resumed working on films and produced a number of successful movies with philosophical, and sometimes straightforward, Kṛṣṇa conscious content. In 2010 he joined the editorial team for Bulgarian BBT books and became the main editor for The Nectar of Instruction, Bhagavad-gītā, Science of Self-Realization, a handful of small books, and cantos 5 and 6 of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. He began work on the editing of Canto 7, but was unable to complete it when he fell ill with pancreatic cancer, the disease that took his life in 2022. His passing was a great loss for the Bulgarian devotee community and the BBT. He was a talented wordsmith and a very wonderful devotee, and his style of editing was very much appreciated by all.

We Make Green books Still

Our commitment to making green books is as strong

We׳re sometimes asked how earth-friendly printed books are. How does the carbon footprint of a print book compare with that of an ebook, for example?

It׳s not easy to produce a book that is perfectly ecological, but the printing industry is making progress, and the NE BBT remains committed to finding and working with printers who are using cleaner materials. Our main printer in Germany, for example, uses electricity exclusively from 100 percent renewable sources – definitely a step in the right direction.

Soon we׳ll have the option to order our books as CO2-neutral products, paying a tiny surcharge of a few Eurocents per book for this choice. We׳re also careful to order paper and cardboard produced only by mills known for their commitment to reducing CO2 emissions.

The printed book is an excellent product which, in comparison to many other products, has a relatively low emissions profile and is produced by an industry invested in reducing their ecological footprint.

We try to stay abreast of industry developments. In the meantime, whenever possible, we continue to use paper made from controlled, sustainable forestry practices and work with printers who use solventfree inks, cleaner varnishes, water-based binding glues, and paper bleached with oxygen rather than elemental (and dioxin-producing) chlorine.

We also ensure that the European printers we work with are EMAS-certified. This means at the very least that they use alcohol-free printing processes, which means they generate much less air and water pollution.

Most book distributors in Europe prefer their books to arrive individually shrink-wrapped, so we make sure we order wrapping film that is fully recyclable and that good quality plastics are used in their manufacture.

We׳re here to serve you. If you have concerns or suggestions about the materials we use, let us know.

as ever.
