The completion of an extensive research-based project, either institutional or self-initiated, marks the end of a student’s tenure at PPSU as part of the college curriculum. A student is expected to produce professional design coursework with application and execution capabilities in the field of design and on a topic related to the discipline that the student has studied. This is referred to as a Degree Venture or Graduation Project. Throughout the project’s duration, youth are faced to real-life hypotheticals under the supervision of faculty.
The student selects a topic to study in depth in order to build a design perspective on it. Along with design, the project will further emphasize presentation, multitasking, abilities, communication, and dealing with practical constraints. Before entering the industry as a design professional, the project analyses the strengths and limitations. The following project is institutional, with the Kalrav School as principle core. Over the course of five months, the project was completed with reviews to assess progress in the areas of research, idea, design, and implementation.

Synopsis: The project summary
Krishnapatel Graduation Project Designing for intellectual challenged student.
This project contains the process of understanding, acknowledging, branding and developing a learning activity kit for the intellectually challenged children. This project helps to develop a deeper understanding of the design process by gathering and analyzing information about the important aspects of the process. This gives an opportunity to define design direction and make design decisions for the children by working closely onsite with different stakeholders like the founder, manager, staff, employees, visitors, physicians and children in an engaging environment of Kalrav School for mentally stinted children.
The project starts with understanding the history, background, research including interviews, comparative study of different schools, existing identity analysis, ideation, designing a new identity, brand guidelines, stationery, and other collaterals by taking important decisions about the visual design. Along with the new identity the project involves designing the game, wayfinding and learning system for the children. The project follows the process till the execution of the whole design system.

School of Design (SOD) offers the B.DES and B.ID curriculum that emphasizes the skills and knowledge of design education. Where one can find their own balance between craft, vision, and self-expression within the context of real industrial need. Design is continuous creative process which includes thinking, brainstorming, ideation and coming up with final outcome/object which is more comfortable to use and aesthetically more pleasing.
The graduation project reflects the student's ability to:
Visual Communication plays a powerful role in majority of our buying choices. In a world mediated by images and graphics, Visual Communication comes across as a wonderful career option. PPSU’s course on Visual Communication educates students to produce creative solutions to meet the visual communication needs of the society. It helps students to become problem solvers and develop effective visual products. Students are equipped with technical and conceptual skills to articulate and express ideas, think conceptually, conduct research and critically evaluate the process.

The course involves imparting skills on typography, creating visual structures, colour design and composition and image generation. The course includes assignments that focus on problem solving for existing designs that help build the experience design skills of students.
• Evaluate/reflect upon the creative processes s/ he has followed.
• Apply what they have learned to present methods when developing new kinds of products, services, processes, and systems.
About Visual Communication Design
• On the basis of criticism, analyse and iterative improve your ideas.
The course challenges students to think critically and experience the transformative ability of design. The course prepares students for exciting careers in the fields of Professional Design Practitioner, Entrepreneur, Advertising Agency, Professional Photographer, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Multimedia specialist, UI/UX Designer, Curator, Design Educator.
While the last point above represents a higher order of inquiry usually expected in research, its significance in design cannot be understated if the designer is also to be viewed as a ‘reflective practitioner. The graduation project reflects the students competence to excel in their chosen profession. This project orients the students to the needs and demands of the industry, it also helps students to make an informed decision about which career path they would like to follow upon graduation.
The end of the students' academic careers at the school of design, PP Savani university is marked by the culmination of a substantial investigation in the field of design on a topic closely allied to their discipline of study. It is through the graduation project and subsequent documentation of the same that this investigation takes place This is the final academic project for the student. A jury comprising faculty members evaluates the students' performance in the graduation project, after which, students are awarded PPSUs professional education programme final graduation.
The graduation project is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their expertise as independent practitioners of design. However, this project must be done with academic rigour incorporating systematic inquiry and informed design decisions. The phrase 'systematic inquiry implies the presence of a structure and method by which the student must carry out his/her project. The graduation project should reflect the thought leadership manifested through creativity and innovation. The project should lead to new knowledge creation and should align with broader objectives of the institute.

About Me
Visual communication student at PPSU, Surat
Visual
I was raised in Bharuch, Gujarat, where I was born. I’ve always had a creative edge, and it’s what led me on this four-year path into visual communication design. In the last four years, I have learned a lot. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that one can never know everything and that a designer must be open to all possibilities. This realisation sparked a process of learning and unlearning. I’ve noticed that graphic design is something I’m interested in, and I plan to pursue it.For me, design is all about making things simpler so they can be used more effectively. I value simplicity and think it always stands out in both people and their works of art.

In Grade 7, my school organized a charity visit to “Kalrav” school. The emotions, reality, love, and care for the intellectually stunted children had a profound impact on me. All of this motivated me to embark on this career and design my graduation project. An ideal society is one that acknowledges everyone and is inclined to adapt in order to make people happy. So, the goal of this project is to conduct research and learn about intellectually challenged children and also can provide platform to create awareness of the school as well as support children in their education.
The goal of project - based learning is to instil sensitiv ity in students. And the Design Curriculum at PPSU is designed in such a way that we gain knowledge to see the troubles around us and provide solutions to those problems.
Why This Project ?
Why self-sponsor ?
My entire life has been a journey of discovery, starting with the waking of my inner self to interpretations and fantasies, and ending when I feel my feet firmly planted on the ground while being entertained by the search for every potential “why. “My sensitivity develops into beliefs, which then produce values. I pause for a second to consider the best way to communicate what I feel. Good or terrible continues to be a matter of ambiguity that develops through time.

An intellectual disability is defined as an IQ below 70 and deficits in adaptive behavior or daily living skills (eating, dressing, communication, participate in group activity). People with intellectual disability learn slowly and have difficulty with abstract concepts. 30 million people are intellectually challenged in India.
About Intellectual Challenged
More than 95% are living life of obscurity and are denied the opportunity to be in the main stream. Disability, either physical or mental, is a human right issue and it must be looked into the context. Many students with an intellectual challenged are capable of learning in an inclusive environment if provided with proper support. Many institutions in Gujarat are engaged in rehabilitation and education of intellectually challenged children.

The term intellectual disability refers to the level of cognitive functioning that is demonstrated by particular children. It is the circumstance in which a children’s cognitive functioning is impeded to the point of causing a significant disability in receiving information from his or her environment, then effectively processing, problem solving and adapting to this information. Intellectual disability is characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour, the latter expressed as conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills.

Designing for intellectual challenged student.
An approximate 30 million individuals in our region are mentally challenged. And over 90 percent live in darkness and are rejected the rights to engage in society. Impairment, whether tangible or intellectual, is a civil rights issue that must be addressed. Many Gujarati organizations are involved in the regeneration and training of intellectually deficient youth. Our Bharuch, though industrially developed, was legging in such facilities. In the year 1992 - Kalrav Charitable Trust was established with humble mission - To unfold potential of child with intellectual disabilities. The sojourn was started with only five children and today more than 95 children are benefited who were deprived off their legitimate right of to be in the general society. Today we strive to create wholeness for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they can meaningfully participate in social and general life. Time elapsed, many NGOs / institutions extended all possible help and today the reality is before you. Sharing knowledge of curative education and the care of children with special needs has been a hallmark of “Kalrav” since its inception.
History Of Kalrav School
• Motivating children / parents / teachers for future, challenging life.
Intellectual disability is characterized by significant impairment in cognitive and adaptive behaviour. Educating individuals with intellectual disabilities requires awareness and much patience. Awareness involves a conscious efforts. The severity of intellectual disability is not a disease but is a stage which is underdeveloped and can be cured with the help of proper training and education. Sacrifice, service and dedication are at the helm at “Kalrav”.
• Extending vocational training to generate income for the intellectually challenged children
• Extending general / day-to-day knowledge to intellectually challenged children
• Arranging occasional medical check-up camps for the children
Due to lack of awareness these children are deprived of their legitimate right for medical treatment, education and rehabilitation.
As per World Health Organization 10% of the total population suffering from disabilities.
• Providing guidance and help for “Niramaya” Health Insurance Scheme & Guardianship Act of National Trust, New Delhi.
• Extending physiotherapy treatment to the needy children / employees of ONGC and citizen of Bharuch city in in house Physiotherapy Centre on a charity rates
• Training for Yoga / Reki
Visual Communication P.P Savani University45. 46.
Future - Of Kalrav School
We can only extend them equal opportunity, equal rights for vocational rehabilitation. A step forward in this direction has already been put by installing nine hand operated machines for preparing paper bowls which are working at full capacity utilization there by providing an opportunity to 18 such children, those who are in the age group of 18 years and above, for self- reliance. Second project of preparing office-files is also in full swing and have received an overwhelming response from the various private / government organizations and public at large.
Today “Kalrav” is engaged in the activities of:
• Counselling of parents and guiding them for future depending upon the child’s performance.
• Various activities are being carried out at “Kalrav”. At present “Kalrav” is functioning as day-care center. About 95 children is the strength of the School. It also provides year-round training for vocational rehabilitation.

This book, as its title indicates, is a short text for the first course in psychology. A short textbook can serve two purposes. It can provide all or most of the printed material for a course that is truly intended to be a survey and not go into the details covered in longer psychology texts. A short textbook can also be used to make room in a more intensive course for other study materials, such as a book of readings, which can give students a perspective that even the lengthiest textbook cannot provide.
Secondary Research Literature Review
A Brief Introduction To Psychology
Krishnapatel Graduation Project Designing for intellectual challenged student.
Abnormal Psychology And Behaviour Disorder
The aim is to present inaccurate picture of what psychologies Know, as distinguished from what they think or how they work. Cover information that students can apply to their fields of interest and in their own lives.
A glossary has been included as a study aid, and learning objectives have been provided at the beginning of each chapter.
Visual Communication P.P Savani University61. 62.
Abnormal Psychology is an Open Education Resource written by Alexis Bridley, Ph.D. and Lee W. Daffin Jr., Ph.D. through Washington State University. The book tackles the difficult topic of mental disorders in 15 modules. This journey starts by discussing what abnormal behaviour is by attempting to understand what normal behaviour is. Models of abnormal psychology and clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment are then discussed. With these three modules completed, the authors next explore several classes of mental disorders in 5 blocks. Block 1 covers mood, trauma and stressor related, and dissociative disorders. Block 2 covers anxiety, somatic symptom, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Block 3 covers eating and substance-related and addictive disorders. Block 4 tackles schizophrenia spectrum and personality disorders. Finally, Block 5 investigates neurocognitive disorders and then ends with a discussion of contemporary issues in psychopathology. Disorders are covered by discussing their clinical presentation and DSM Criteria, epidemiology, comorbidity, etiology, and treatment options.
Talking about training , so there are many example like educational support, behavioural intervention, vocational training, family education, government resources and psychopharmologic interventions. There are different type of diagnosis such as child abuse which have developmental delays in learning language and social skills. Debilitating medical disease, cerebral palsy, sensory disability and speech disorder. There are many complications in intellectual disability, deterrence and patient education. It is important to enhance healthcare team outcomes.
Psychological Testing
The book “Psychological Testing - A practical approach to design and evaluation” is written by Theresa JB Kline. According to World Health Organization Disability is defined as any restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being. Intellectual Disability (ID) is one form of disability. Intellectual Disability is divided into four degree of severity; mild, moderate, severe and profound. The purpose of this review was to review various studies/ literature available free online regarding status of Intellectual Disability in India. Presently, most individuals with ID in India have not been formally identified and even among those who have been identified, the majorities are excluded by the rest of society. As a result, individuals with ID are not afforded the same opportunities as people without
A Review: Status Of I.D In India

The most significant of these reforms was the ‘Persons with Disabilities (Equal Protection of Right and Full Participation) Act (PWDA) of 1995 (No. 1 of 1996) which advanced the equal rights and opportunities of all individuals with disabilities. More specifically, individuals with ID were guaranteed free education, special job allotments, and various other resources to assure their inclusion within society. Cognitive–behavioural therapy has the strongest evidence base in the general population and is being increasingly used in the intellectual disability population. Thus, this is likely to be an important psychological intervention for the person with Intellectual Disability.
Only 1% of children with disabilities have access to school and one third of most disabilities are preventable. Throughout the 1990’s, the Indian government developed policies to address the needs of individuals with ID and to better include them in society.
In India 80% of children with disabilities will not survive past age forty. More than 500 million population in the world and around 100 million in India are debarred from full participation in their families, communities and societies due to their disabilities. The lack of physical access to facilities, transportation, and information circumscribes them from enjoying equal opportunities in housing, employment and health care.

Further, disabilities.there is clearly a lack of information regarding the number of individuals with ID within India. Studies showed that in India 1.67% of the 0-19 population has a disability. Some studies showed that there are 31 million individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) in India.35.29% of all people living with disabilities, are children. Other estimates say that India has 12 million children living with disabilities.

AREAPROMOTIONAL
Designing promotional materials is the topic of this section to encourage Kalrav’s business. furthermore offer a platform for raising awareness of the institution. Additionally, it may be a winning approach for a district to develop identities for children who are graduating school in order to provide possibilities for academic progress and create a feeling of pride in students, teachers, parents, and communities.
• Look at the children playing, not the disability, look at the shine of happiness in his eyes, playing with a learning activity kit, which is made by me. Due to the an intellectual disability they need a creative way of learning by which children can at least have basic knowledge. This is a activity where this children can show amazing talent of exploring, creating , and imaginations, which helps their mind to increase intellectual abilities.
EXPLANATION
• Look at the children living, not the disability. You only live once, but if you live it in a right way, than once is enough. The same statement applies for this picture which depicts a boy making a joss stick of different fragrance, at vocational centre as a business for their income, and to add some creativity, I made fragrance wise stickers, for e.g.-rose. This type of activities helps them to keep their mind active and also helps in increasing intellectual power of mind.
Visual Communication P.P Savani University135. 136.
• Look at the child learning, not the disability. The smile of learning something new, reflects clearly on her face. I made some flash cards of different types for learning purpose. Also this flash cards are used as illustration for children to learn.

Playing, children’s most natural form of expressing joy, happiness and curiosity. Just the same like this picture. “Let’s look on their ability and not disability“
Boat: Two hands holding a paper boat, and a pinch of philosophy, written below. That is what we see, but that is not what is actually visible psychologically. The reason I chose, a boat and two intellectual hands because, it symbolises millions of hands, who are sailing in the boat of their ocean, which we call “Life”. A boat for lifetime journey, in which they sail out through emotions, challenges etc. A boat that crosses all the ups and downs of ocean, and someone well said, “ A smooth sea, never made a skilled sailor. There are constant waves of challenges in their life, just like the challenges faced by children’s with physical and mental disabilities.
137. 138.
Plane: Anyone of us ever tried to wonder, that why Wright Brothers invented aeroplane To make impossible things possible, in such a way that people stand still, they are the one who live their life to the fullest. I chose a plane with two intellectually challenged hands because it’s all about learning. The first invention of aeroplane doesn’t look like what we see today, but there was an idea of flying Just the same way intellectually challenged kids have an equal chance to learn in whatever way it can be possible and I keep that idea to make them learn and get educated, motivate them to not feel useless, what if they can’t earn, but what if they can learn.
Bird: Let the bird fly and fly, For flight is its love, For love is its flight. There are no limitations to do what we enjoy, to do what we love. The picture depicts a bird, who wants to fly and soar high up to wherever it can. We don’t have that right to hold on to their flight. I chose bird, with two intellectual hands because it symbolises hope, eternity, enlightenment, wisdom, and elevation. There is special significance of birds spiritually. If we see intellectually challenged kids as a normal bird, than maybe, they would be able to at least learn a skill of leaving their life. They can’t earn, but can live for themselves.

My Humble Appeal
You should start by teaching yourself to avoid using the term “Mentally retarded.” Put “those with intellectual disabilities” in quotation marks. Prioritize the “People” That will be the finest thing you can start doing since using such a phrase will boost my dignity as a person and will make me feel valued as a human being. Be as kind and approachable as you would be with anybody else while dealing with me. You interact with me, give me your whole attention, and treat me with the same decency and respect that you would anybody else.

If I have to work on a project that I did not believe In, I am never satisfied. I firmly believe that design has also a cultural role to play other than making things beautiful; which can and should be emphasised at every available opportunity. It could create awareness about your context. It could be something to Identify to, It could be a purely functional aid. Design can add value and emotion to people’s lives. But this was just one project, a start, with new learning and new Insights and new experiences.
I’m eager to see what lies in waiting for me. I wish to look into additional branding-related initiatives with needed individuals and learn more about the creative production process. I want to write, draw, and learn more about the wonders of the world that lie ahead. I aim to do good and bring significance and value to every project I work on.
Krishnapatel Graduation Project Designing for intellectual challenged student.
Lastly I would like to summarize how my graduation project has helped me to grow, articulate and turn the odds into even. This project has helped me to explore another domain of design which includes sensitivity, skill, the attitude of acceptance and knowing new things. I was quite happy with the outcomes of my efforts, which were highly appreciated. During the course of this project, I experimented and explored many new things on my own. I gained a lot of knowledge about my own strengths, shortcomings, and coping mymechanisms.projectwas an attempt to imitate a certain design approach, but it was also unique and thrilling.
Visual Communication P.P Savani University145. 146.
I’ve learned a tonne of stuff during the course of this endeavour. I might put bravery as one of them here. I came to understand that one requires bravery to be a designer. Courage to make project judgments and to accept responsibility for your job.
Whatever I do, I immerse myself in it. As the day went on, I immersed myself more and more in my project. This one project has certainly initiated many other projects ideas of branding and problem solving and choosing graphics as a career choice. Working with special children was a completely different experience. This project was an introspection followed by efforts in creatively visualizing an idea that would throw light on all intended aspects of the project. The project brings up interesting provocations and starting points for conversation in and around society.
Reflection
Reflection its about acknowledging how many people have left their impression on you. It’s about finding the me, once again.
The past five months have been exciting, difficult, unpredictable, and extremely enlightening all at once.
