Analysis and study

Interview: Me: Do you ever get bored of tea? Grandfather: Impossible! Me: Can you imagine a day without tea? Grandfather: Well, Dont give me nighmares. Me: Well, but holding the tea can and pouring tea out of it with a spoon can be difficult sometimes? Grandfather: I’m old now, my hands shake! Me:What do do think would make things easier if suppose a tea company came and asked you? Grandfather: I hate holding the spoon... Might as well do away with that!

Research and Problem Statement Elderly people often prefer pouring tea out of a tea box for brewing, instead of using tea bags. Parkinson’s Desease However, with age, some people develop a nervous disorder called Parkinson’s Desease. The disease symptoms are shaking Wrists, rigidity, slowness of movement. The shaking and inconsistency of movement make it difficult for elderly people to pour the right amout of tea into the pan. They sometimes end up spilling the tea tea leaves.

Tea measurements As we know tea making is extremely sensetive. If brewed with with a little more or less tea leaves the drink is spoiled Tea leaves are added according to one’s preference of light or strong tea. Often this measurement are personal and not mentioned or administerd whithin the tea can or tea package, which might be essential for elderly people with Parkinsons.

Selecting the Brand Tea being a very sensetive beverage is very well associated with the brand. After talking to quite a lot of senior citizens I decided on working on the tea can of Twinngs.

Approach Since this is a favourite drink of the elderly, they often choose to personalize their brew by making it themselves and cutting down on cost, which would be unlikely if they were to use tea bags. However, for people with Parkinson’s Desease, making tea which will involves the task of taking out tea with a spoon can be troublesome. Instead shaking the can to take out the desired amount of tea can be helpful. The can, can be refilled by tea anytime. Also the amount coming out the can with each shake, is administerd so no extra amount will fall off. Also the container lock can be easily handeled by elderly people which means it would be easy to open and at the same time will be air tight.

Old Twinings Tea cans.

My main inspiration came from the “Johnson’s baby powder” tin can and “Catch” (Masala Cans).

Studying previous works Since a lot of work has been done on tea packaging before I had a lot of examples to study from. From classic tea cans to new age tetrahedron packagings.

Charecteristics of Tea Tea is a very sensetive beverage. It gets bad with moisture. It has to kept in air tight boxes. There are three types of tea served in India. Lea leaves, tea grains and Tea dust.

Tea Leaves

Used mostly for flavoured tea leaves are found all over india and are generallt preffered for liquor tea. It has a orange red colour can vary from golden yellow to brown depending on brew and leaf variety.

Tea Grains

These are the most used varieties and are made from tea leaves from all over India. Sometimes artificial flavours are added to them. They can also be used for milk tea. The brew is brown to dark red.

Tea Dust

Generally found in western India. This tea generally has a very dark brew and is only used for Chai or milk tea with masala.

Ideation and Sketches

Initial sketches

These were some initial ideas that I drew on paper. The final idea developed later. In this Image I was trying to understand the seive similar to powder can.

Digital Drawing of Tea Package

Main body of the tea can. From Left top: Structure of the package, Right top: Inner stucture of the package, Below: Photo-realistic representation of the package ( resemblance in terms of colour, feel and texture)

Contents: •Cap •Seive •Body The image on the right shows the cap and the body only. This also explains the ,mechanism of the lock and how the cap can be retracted. As old people tend to have problem with opening caps that are fitted to the can by resistance or vacuum, in This package I have devised a Groove locking mechanism with which the person can simply tug on the hing of the cap with a slight pull to open it. Material: As tea is weather sensetive it has to be made waterproof or moisture proof. I hence thought of includng an alumunium lining to the inner wall of the box. The outer lining is however paper to reduce cost and make it light and give it a texture for grip.

Size:

Height: 6, Diameter:4(inches)

Ergonomics The above diagrams demonstrate three ways in which the packaging can be used. The label will be made of paper to enure better grip and lower cost.

Better Grip

Lighter Weight

Exterior coating The nozzle will be constructed of plastic for longivity. The paper covering of the outer lining will be coated with plastic to reduce withering.

Inside components, Usage and afterlife Seive and Locking:

Leaves

Grains

Dust

the Seive has three sets of holes in 90ยบ, 45ยบ and 0ยบ. There are groove at the end of each group to prevent the nozzle from sliding and in the ends of both sides are sealed areas, This is there to lock the nozzle when the tea is not used. The seive containsthree types of hole sets which are TEA LEAVES (large holes), GRAINS (mediun sized holes), DUST (small holes).

After life:

It can be used to pour refill packs of tea so that it is economical. This also reduces the waste of material. Lift seive to refill can Cap

3D Rendering and Prototyping

Primary Prototyping The primary prototype is made with a cardboard cylinder an a metal base wrapping alumunium foil. The secgments and sizings are looked in the prototype.

Hand made prototype With cardboard and alumunium foil. Tea inside.

3d Rendering of the Package

I used Sketch-up to make this particular 3d rendering. Later the product was recreated in other Rhino for 3D printing

Product visualization and rebranding

Product Visualization and Rebranding In the above image, I have visualised the Product and how it will be once its finished. Below, I have explored some rebrading themes for twinings. They are labels and are made for the ‘tea leave’ range of twinings tea cans. I have tried to match the visuals with the themes of the teas that they are trying to represent along with bigger and more organised text for better readability for older people.
