NEWS AND NOTES BLAZING THE TRAIL: Entering his third season with the Trail Blazers, Terry Stotts was hired as the franchise’s 14th head coach on August 7, 2012. Stotts led the Trail Blazers to a 54-win season in 2013-14, marking the largest improvement in franchise history and the sixth-best record all-time. Portland won its first playoff series in 14 seasons, defeating the Houston Rockets in six games and setting up a Western Conference Semifinal matchup with the San Antonio Spurs. The postseason berth was the team’s first since 2010-11. Named the NBA’s Western Conference Coach of the Month for November of 2013 after getting the Trail Blazers off to a 13-3 start, Stotts, 56, has molded Portland into one of the top offensive teams in the NBA, ranking among league leaders in scoring (fourth), free throw pct. (first), 3-point pct. (10th), rebounds (first), assists (ninth) and turnovers (fifth) for 2013-14. The Trail Blazers’ 106.7-point scoring average last season stands as the highest in 20 years (1993-94, 107.3 ppg). Stotts has compiled an 87-77 (.530) record in two seasons at the helm in Portland, and has a 202-245 (.452) NBA overall coaching record between his stints with Atlanta, Milwaukee and Portland.
GETTING DEFENSIVE: After allowing 105 points per game to opponents through the first three preseason games, Portland’s defense buckled down to the tune of 83 points allowed per game through the rest of the preseason (3-1). The Trail Blazers held Denver to 75 points in their 93-75 win on Oct. 21, the third lowest point total by an NBA team in 87 preseason games this season. BIG OFF THE BENCH: In five games off the bench for Portland, Chris Kaman is averaging 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game. He has started the previous two games for Portland, averaging 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in 22 minutes. Kaman is shooting 31-of-51, ranking 17th in the NBA in field goal percentage (60.8%).
ALDRIDGE ASCENDING: Since joining Portland in 2006-07, LaMarcus Aldridge has carved his name into the record books. Having played in 577 games for Portland (536 starts) Aldridge is averaging 19.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Entering his ninth NBA season, Aldridge ranks second in franchise history in FG made (4,462), third in points scored (10,901), fourth in MODA CENTER MAGIC: Dating back to the 2002-03 season, the defensive rebounds (3,150), offensive rebounds (1,559) and Trail Blazers have won five consecutive games when opening the minutes (20,460) and fifth in total rebounds (4,708) and FT made (1,953). DEJA-VU: When LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum, Damian Lillard, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews take the floor against the Thunder, it will mark the first time since the 1991-92 and 199293 seasons that Portland has had an identical starting lineup on opening night in back-to-back seasons. Throughout the NBA, not a single team had the same opening night starting lineup in the 2013-14 season as it did in 2012-13.

When making 10-plus threes in a game last season, Portland was 27-8.
NEWS AND NOTES FAMILIAR FACES: After winning 54 games and a first round playoff series in 2013-14, the Trail Blazers return all five starters and 13 total players from last season. This is Portland’s largest class of returning players in franchise history. The Trail Blazers previously brought back as many as 12 players in the offseason between the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. WRITTEN IN STONE: Trail Blazers Head Coach Terry Stotts produced just two different starting lineups throughout the 2013-14 regular season, the lowest total in the league. Only six other teams had less than 10 different starting lineups, while 12 teams ended the season with 20 or more. CORE FOUR: Consistency was a common theme for Portland last season, and it all started with the starting lineup. Out of the 12 players in the NBA to start all 82 games in 2013-14, four donned Trail Blazers’ colors. Nicolas Batum, Damian Lillard, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews all started in every game for Portland last season, while no other team had more than one player accomplsh that feat. Portland became the first team to have four players start every game throughout the regular season since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010-11. DIVISION DOMINANCE: The Trail Blazers finished the 201314 capaign with a 13-3 record against their Northwest Division opponents. That record marks not only the best record in the five-team division, but also the best record vs. divisional opponents throughout the entire NBA. Division dominance has been no ordinary thing for Portland, as Rip City had won just 10 total games against divisional foes in the previous two seasons (2012-13, 2011-12). TIDES TURNING: After winning just 33 games in 2012-13, The Trail Blazers stormed back to win 54 games last season, their most since the 2008-09 season (54-28). Portland’s 21-game turnaround from 12-13 to 13-14 represents the largest one-season turnaround in franchise history. Last season’s performance snapped the previous record of a 20-game turnaround after Portland won 59 games in 1989-90 (39-43 in 1988). DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT: The Trail Blazers defense improved throughout the course of the season. Prior to the All-Star break last season Portland ranked 19th in the NBA with 104.6 points allowed per 100 possessions. After the All-Star Game, however, Portland jumped up nine spots to 10th in the NBA in points allowed per 100 possessions (103.6). DOUBLE TROUBLE: LaMarcus Aldridge recorded a careerhigh 40 double-doubles last season, ranking seventh best in the NBA. Aldridge also became the first Trail Blazers player to reach the 40 double-double mark since the 2003-04 season when Zach Randolph notched 43 in 81 games played. In addition to his regular season production, Aldridge also had eight doubledoubles in the playoffs in 11 games against Houston and San Antonio. THIRD TEAM REPPIN’: LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard were both named Third Team All-NBA last season, becoming the first Rip City duo since 1977-78 (Bill Walton, Maurice Lucas) to both recieve All-NBA Honors.
SURVIVE AND ADVANCE: In defeating the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs last season, the Trail Blazers advanced to the second round of the postseason for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, when they reached the Western Conference Finals. Portland’s win over Houston snapped a string of six consecutive first-round playoff defeats dating back to the 2000-01 season. WESLEY FROM DEEP: En route to producing his best scoring output ( 16.4 ppg) in five NBA seasons, Wesley Matthews also recorded a stellar shooting season from behind the arc. Not only was his 201 three-pointers made in a season a career high, but he also finished fifth in the league. Matthews became the second player in NBA history to make at least 125 three-pointers in each of his first four seasons (Kevin Durant). HOME COOKIN’: Portland wrapped up the 2013-14 season with 54 wins, 31 of which came within the friendly confines of the Moda Center. The Trail Blazers’ 31-10 home record was the sixth best home record in the NBA, and the organization’s best since 2008-09 (34-7). MODA CENTER MADNESS: The Trail Blazers finished the 201314 season ranked fifth in attendance with 809,612 fans piling into the Moda Center through 82 home games (19,746/game). This continued a common trend for the Rip City faithful, as Portland has finished top-10 in the league’s attendance ratings for seven consecutive seasons (2008-2014). This stretch includes two seasons (2011, 2012) in which the Trail Blazers finished as high as second in the league’s attendance. ROLO’S ROLLIN’: It was a banner year for Robin Lopez in his first season with the Trail Blazers, as the big man hauled in a career-highs of rebounds (8.5) and blocks (1.7) per game to go along with 11.1 points.
