NEWS AND NOTES BLAZING THE TRAIL: Entering his third season with the Trail Blazers, Terry Stotts was hired as the franchise’s 14th head coach on August 7, 2012. Stotts led the Trail Blazers to a 54-win season in 2013-14, marking the largest improvement in franchise history and the sixth-best record all-time. Portland won its first playoff series in 14 seasons, defeating the Houston Rockets in six games and setting up a Western Conference Semifinal matchup with the San Antonio Spurs. The postseason berth was the team’s first since 2010-11. Named the NBA’s Western Conference Coach of the Month for November of 2013 after getting the Trail Blazers off to a 13-3 start, Stotts, 56, has molded Portland into one of the top offensive teams in the NBA, ranking among league leaders in scoring (fourth), free throw pct. (first), 3-point pct. (10th), rebounds (first), assists (ninth) and turnovers (fifth) for 2013-14. The Trail Blazers’ 106.7-point scoring average last season stands as the highest in 20 years (1993-94, 107.3 ppg). Stotts has compiled an 87-77 (.530) record in two seasons at the helm in Portland, and has a 202-245 (.452) NBA overall coaching record between his stints with Atlanta, Milwaukee and Portland. WORTH NOTING: In the past six seasons, the Trail Blazers are 5-1 in games following their first loss of the season. FUNDAMENTAL BASKETBALL: Through two games this season, the Trail Blazers have committed just 21 turnovers. That 10.5 turnover per game mark is the second best in the NBA for teams that have played more than one game. LATE GAME LILLARD: Damian Lillard scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter in Friday night’s loss to Sacramento. In two games this season, Lillard has scored six total points in the first half of play (2-10 FG) compared to 24 second half points. 19 of Lillard’s 30 points have come in the fourth quarter. LA OPEN FOR BUSINESS: LaMarcus Aldridge followed up a 27-point performance against the Thunder with 22 points on Friday night against Sacramento. Aldridge has led Portland’s scoring efforts in each of the first two games this season for the first time in his nine-year career. Aldridge is currently ranked ninth in the NBA in scoring with 24.5 points per contest.

WESLEY FROM THREE: In his last five preseason games, Wesley Matthews made 17 of his 28 shot attempts from beyond the arc (60.7%). The six-year shooting guard led the team in his six preseason games played with 17 3-point field goals. He ranked ninth in the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage (58.6%). DEJA-VU: With LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum, Damian Lillard, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews all in the starting lineup against the Thunder, it marked the first time since the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons that Portland had an identical starting lineup on opening night in back-to-back seasons. Throughout the NBA, not a single team had the same opening night starting lineup in the 2013-14 season as it did in 2012-13. ALDRIDGE ASCENDING: Since joining Portland in 2006-07, LaMarcus Aldridge has carved his name into the record books. Having played in 577 games for Portland entering this season (536 starts), Aldridge averaged 19.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Entering his ninth NBA season, Aldridge ranks second in franchise history in FG made (4,462), third in points scored (10,901), fourth in defensive rebounds (3,150), offensive rebounds (1,559) and minutes (20,460) and fifth in total rebounds (4,708) and FT made (1,953). Aldridge earned his third All-Star Game nod last season, becoming just the fifth Portland player to be named to at least three All-Star teams (Drexler, Lucas, Roy, Wicks). DAME FROM DEEP: In just his second NBA season, Damian Lillard connected on 218 3-pointers last season, surpassing his previous record set in 2011-12 (185) for the franchise record of most threes made in a single season. Lillard’s 403 3-point field goals made set an all-time NBA record for most 3-pointers made in a player’s first two NBA seasons. SHOOTING (ALL-STARS): Both LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard were selected to the Western Conference All-Star Team last season, becoming just the first Portland duo to head to the mid-season classic since Clyde Drexler and Clifford Robinson both participated during the 1993-94 season.

TRIPLE THREAT: Last season, Portland ranked fourth in the NBA with 770 three-point field goals. The Trail Blazers were the only team in the NBA with three players ranked in the top-25 in three-pointers made (Lillard: 218; Matthews: 201; Batum: 145). Portland also set a franchise record on Jan. 2 for most three-pointers in a single game, knocking down 21 against Charlotte. The Trail Blazers became the first team in NBA history to compile two 21 3-point field goal games in one season (also Dec. 14 at Philadelphia). When making 10-plus BIG OFF THE BENCH: In two games this season, Chris Kaman threes in a game last season, Portland was 27-8. is averaging 12 points on 12-of-20 shooting. The seven-foot center has registered double-digit scoring in both games this season after BALL MOVEMENT: In the first preseason game on Oct. 7, Portland scoring 10-plus points in just five games last year. produced just 13 assists on 28 field goals (46%) to the tune of 73 points. In the final five preseason games, however, 152 of the Trail FAST START: Portland stormed out of the gates in 2013-14, Blazers’ 222 field goals have come via the assist (68%). Portland winning 24 of its first 30 games. That hot start marked the orga- averaged 102.6 points per game over the previous five contests. In nization’s best win percentage (.800) since it went 24-6 during their first four preseason games, the Trail Blazers tallied 100 assists. the 1998-99 season. Portland ammassed 100 assists through the first four games just one other time in the past 10 seasons (2008-09). Portland currently ranks fourth in the NBA in total assists for teams that have played seven games.

BOUNCE BACK GAMES: After scoring 10 points in the seasonopener against Oklahoma City, Damian Lillard bounced back with a 20-point showing on Friday night against Sacramento. In the 11 games following a contest in which Lillard posted 10 points or less in his career, he has bounced back to average 24.8 points on 50.8 percent shooting.

NEWS AND NOTES ALLEN GOES ALL OUT IN FIGHT AGAINST EBOLA: With the Ebola epidemic picking up steam in recent weeks, Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen stepped in and donated $100 million last week. “I’m just trying to help show the way that we need to really increase what we’re doing now, because we’re currently chasing the expansion of the disease, and we’ve got to get ahead of the expansion,” Allen told Casey Holdahl of Trailblazers.com. FAMILIAR FACES: After winning 54 games and a first round playoff series in 2013-14, the Trail Blazers return all five starters and 13 total players from last season. This is Portland’s largest class of returning players in franchise history. The Trail Blazers previously brought back as many as 12 players in the offseason between the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. WRITTEN IN STONE: Trail Blazers Head Coach Terry Stotts produced just two different starting lineups throughout the 2013-14 regular season, the lowest total in the league. Only six other teams had less than 10 different starting lineups, while 12 teams ended the season with 20 or more. CORE FOUR: Consistency was a common theme for Portland last season, and it all started with the starting lineup. Out of the 12 players in the NBA to start all 82 games in 2013-14, four donned Trail Blazers’ colors. Nicolas Batum, Damian Lillard, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews all started in every game for Portland last season, while no other team had more than one player accomplsh that feat. Portland became the first team to have four players start every game throughout the regular season since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010-11. DIVISION DOMINANCE: The Trail Blazers finished the 201314 capaign with a 13-3 record against their Northwest Division opponents. That record marks not only the best record in the five-team division, but also the best record vs. divisional opponents throughout the entire NBA. Division dominance has been no ordinary thing for Portland, as Rip City had won just 10 total games against divisional foes in the previous two seasons (2012-13, 2011-12). TIDES TURNING: After winning just 33 games in 2012-13, The Trail Blazers stormed back to win 54 games last season, their most since the 2008-09 season (54-28). Portland’s 21-game turnaround from 12-13 to 13-14 represents the largest one-season turnaround in franchise history. Last season’s performance snapped the previous record of a 20-game turnaround after Portland won 59 games in 1989-90 (39-43 in 1988). DOUBLE TROUBLE: LaMarcus Aldridge recorded a careerhigh 40 double-doubles last season, ranking seventh best in the NBA. Aldridge also became the first Trail Blazers player to reach the 40 double-double mark since the 2003-04 season when Zach Randolph notched 43 in 81 games played. In addition to his regular season production, Aldridge also had eight doubledoubles in the playoffs in 11 games against Houston and San Antonio. BEASTING THE EAST: In 2013-14, Portland compiled a 23-7 record against the Eastern Conference, trailing only San Antonio (24-6) for most cross-conference wins. It also represented the Trail Blazers highest win-total against the east since before 2002.

DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT: The Trail Blazers defense improved throughout the course of the season. Prior to the All-Star break last season Portland ranked 19th in the NBA with 104.6 points allowed per 100 possessions. After the All-Star Game, however, Portland jumped up nine spots to 10th in the NBA in points allowed per 100 possessions (103.6). THIRD TEAM REPPIN’: LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard were both named Third Team All-NBA last season, becoming the first Rip City duo since 1977-78 (Bill Walton, Maurice Lucas) to both recieve All-NBA Honors. SURVIVE AND ADVANCE: In defeating the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs last season, the Trail Blazers advanced to the second round of the postseason for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, when they reached the Western Conference Finals. Portland’s win over Houston snapped a string of six consecutive first-round playoff defeats dating back to the 2000-01 season. WESLEY FROM DEEP: En route to producing his best scoring output (16.4 ppg) in five NBA seasons, Wesley Matthews also recorded a stellar shooting season from behind the arc. Not only was his 201 three-pointers made in a season a career high, but he also finished fifth in the league. Matthews became the second player in NBA history to make at least 125 three-pointers in each of his first four seasons (Kevin Durant). HOME COOKIN’: Portland wrapped up the 2013-14 season with 54 wins, 31 of which came within the friendly confines of the Moda Center. The Trail Blazers’ 31-10 home record was the sixth best home record in the NBA, and the organization’s best since 2008-09 (34-7). MODA CENTER MADNESS: The Trail Blazers finished the 201314 season ranked fifth in attendance with 809,612 fans piling into the Moda Center through 82 home games (19,746/game). This continued a common trend for the Rip City faithful, as Portland has finished top-10 in the league’s attendance ratings for seven consecutive seasons (2008-2014).
