NEWS AND NOTES BLAZING THE TRAIL: Entering his third season with the Trail Blazers, Terry Stotts was hired as the franchise’s 14th head coach on August 7, 2012. Stotts led the Trail Blazers to a 54-win season in 2013-14, marking the largest improvement in franchise history and the sixth-best record all-time. Portland won its first playoff series in 14 seasons, defeating the Houston Rockets in six games and setting up a Western Conference Semifinal matchup with the San Antonio Spurs. The postseason berth was the team’s first since 2010-11. Named the NBA’s Western Conference Coach of the Month for November of 2013 after getting the Trail Blazers off to a 13-3 start, Stotts, 56, has molded Portland into one of the top offensive teams in the NBA, ranking among league leaders in scoring (fourth), free throw pct. (first), 3-point pct. (10th), rebounds (first), assists (ninth) and turnovers (fifth) for 2013-14. The Trail Blazers’ 106.7-point scoring average last season stands as the highest in 20 years (1993-94, 107.3 ppg). Stotts has compiled an 87-77 (.530) record in two seasons at the helm in Portland, and has a 202-245 (.452) NBA overall coaching record.

SHARING IS CARING: The Trail Blazers dished out nine assists in the fourth quarter alone after compiling just 11 through the first three periods. That surge put Portland at 20 assists for the night, marking the 11th time in as many games that the Trail Blazers have reached the 20-assist mark. Portland has now finished with more assists than its opponent in each of the past eight games. DAZZLING DAMIAN: After averaging just 13.6 points on 26.8% shooting through the first three games of 2014-15, Damian Lillard has averaged 28.7 points on 63-of-118 shooting from the field (53.3%). After making five 3-pointers in a game just once through the first seven contests, Lillard has now made 16 3-point field goals in the past four games (16-27 3-PT). Lillard currently sits atop the NBA with 35 3-point field goals.

(LA)TE NIGHT CLOSING: After scoring 6 points on 3-of-8 shooting in the first half, LaMarcus Aldridge scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half (6-10 FG). 10 of those points came in the fourth quarter alone, as Aldridge shot 3-of-5 (4-4 FT) and hauled in five TRENDING EARLY: rebounds in 9 fourth quarter minutes. MODA MAGIC: With 102-93 win over New Orleans on Monday, the Trail Blazers improved to 7-1 at the Moda Center this season. Those seven wins lead the NBA for most wins at home in 2014-15. CARDIAC ‘TRAIL’ CATS: Trailing by 15 points with 10:03 remaining, the Trail Blazers closed the game on a 34-10 run to solidify the 102-93 come-from-behind victory. Portland trailed by as much as 16 in this game, marking the second time in 11 games this season that the Trail Blazers have overcome a deficit of 16 points or more to win. Portland is 3-0 this year when trailing after three quarters. 3-POINT REVIVAL: After making just one of their first seven 3-point attempts in the first half, the Trail Blazers bounced back to shoot 6-of-12 from beyond the arc in the second half (50.0%). Portland was 4-of-6 from deep in the fourth quarter. The Trail Blazers are currently ranked second in the NBA with 10.5 3-point field goals per game.

MILESTONE IN THE MAKING: With 35 3-pointers made through 11 games this season, Damian Lillard now has converted 438 3-pointers in his two-plus years in the NBA. Lillard is just 108 3-pointers shy of surpassing Klay Thompson for the most 3-point field goals made through the first three years of a career. FAST START: Portland’s 102-93 win over New Orleans was its eighth win of the season through 11 games. After beating Brooklyn on Saturday, the Trail Blazers solidified their second consecutive season of having at least seven wins in their first 10 games (8-2 in 2013-14). Last year, Portland won 24 of its first 30 games and notched the organization’s highest win percentage (.800) since it went 24-6 in 1998-99. CHANGE OF PACE: With Nicolas Batum (right knee contusion) and LaMarcus Aldridge (upper respiratory illness) having both missed time this season, Portland has posted three different starting lineups through the first 11 games. Last year, the Trail Blazers utilized just two starting lineups in all 82 games.

NEWS AND NOTES ALLEN GOES ALL OUT IN FIGHT AGAINST EBOLA: With the Ebola epidemic picking up steam in recent weeks, Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen stepped in and donated $100 million last week. “I’m just trying to help show the way that we need to really increase what we’re doing now, because we’re currently chasing the expansion of the disease, and we’ve got to get ahead of the expansion,” Allen told Casey Holdahl of Trailblazers.com. ALDRIDGE ASCENDING: Since joining Portland in 2006-07, LaMarcus Aldridge has carved his name into the record books. Having played in 577 games for Portland entering this season (536 starts), Aldridge averaged 19.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Entering his ninth NBA season, Aldridge ranked second in franchise history in FG made (4,462), third in points scored (10,901), fourth in defensive rebounds (3,150), offensive rebounds (1,559) and minutes (20,460) and fifth in total rebounds (4,708) and FT made (1,953). Aldridge earned his third All-Star Game nod last season, becoming just the fifth Portland player to be named to at least three All-Star teams (Drexler, Lucas, Roy, Wicks).

DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT: The Trail Blazers defense improved throughout the course of the season. Prior to the All-Star break last season Portland ranked 19th in the NBA with 104.6 points allowed per 100 possessions. After the All-Star Game, however, Portland jumped up nine spots to 10th in the NBA in points allowed per 100 possessions (103.6). THIRD TEAM REPPIN’: LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard were both named Third Team All-NBA last season, becoming the first Rip City duo since 1977-78 (Bill Walton, Maurice Lucas) to both recieve All-NBA Honors. SURVIVE AND ADVANCE: In defeating the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA Playoffs last season, the Trail Blazers advanced to the second round of the postseason for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, when they reached the Western Conference Finals. Portland’s win over Houston snapped a string of six consecutive first-round playoff defeats dating back to the 2000-01 season.

FAMILIAR FACES: After winning 54 games and a first round playoff series in 2013-14, the Trail Blazers return all five starters and 13 total players from last season. This is Portland’s largest class of returning players in franchise history. The Trail Blazers previously brought back as many as 12 players in the offseason between the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.

WESLEY FROM DEEP: En route to producing his best scoring output (16.4 ppg) in five NBA seasons, Wesley Matthews also recorded a stellar shooting season from behind the arc. Not only was his 201 three-pointers made in a season a career high, but he also finished fifth in the league. Matthews became the second player in NBA history to make at least 125 three-pointers in each of his first four seasons (Kevin Durant).

WRITTEN IN STONE: Trail Blazers Head Coach Terry Stotts produced just two different starting lineups throughout the 2013-14 regular season, the lowest total in the league. Only six other teams had less than 10 different starting lineups, while 12 teams ended the season with 20 or more.

HOME COOKIN’: Portland wrapped up the 2013-14 season with 54 wins, 31 of which came within the friendly confines of the Moda Center. The Trail Blazers’ 31-10 home record was the sixth best home record in the NBA, and the organization’s best since 2008-09 (34-7).

CORE FOUR: Consistency was a common theme for Portland last season, and it all started with the starting lineup. Out of the 12 players in the NBA to start all 82 games in 2013-14, four donned Trail Blazers’ colors. Nicolas Batum, Damian Lillard, Robin Lopez and Wesley Matthews all started in every game for Portland last season, while no other team had more than one player accomplsh that feat. Portland became the first team to have four players start every game throughout the regular season since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2010-11.

DAME FROM DEEP: In just his second NBA season, Damian Lillard connected on 218 3-pointers last season, surpassing his previous record set in 2011-12 (185) for the franchise record of most threes made in a single season. Lillard’s 403 3-point field goals made set an all-time NBA record for most 3-pointers made in a player’s first two NBA seasons.

KINGS OF THE NORTHWEST: The Trail Blazers finished the 2013-14 capaign with a 13-3 record against their Northwest Division opponents. That record marks not only the best record in the five-team division, but also the best record vs. divisional opponents throughout the entire NBA. Division dominance has been no ordinary thing for Portland, as Rip City had won just 10 total games against divisional foes in the previous two seasons (2012-13, 2011-12). DOUBLE TROUBLE: LaMarcus Aldridge recorded a careerhigh 40 double-doubles last season, ranking seventh best in the NBA. Aldridge also became the first Trail Blazers player to reach the 40 double-double mark since the 2003-04 season when Zach Randolph notched 43 in 81 games played. In addition to his regular season production, Aldridge also had eight doubledoubles in the playoffs in 11 games against Houston and San Antonio.

ROLO’S ROLLIN’: It was a banner year for Robin Lopez in his first season with the Trail Blazers, as the big man hauled in career-highs of rebounds (8.5) and blocks (1.7) per game to go along with 11.1 points. Lopez also set the Trail Blazers individual record for offensive rebounds in a season (326) and became the first NBA player to amass 300-plus offensive rebounds and 130plus blocks in a single season since Dwight Howard in 2010-11. Lopez also recorded a career-high 29 double-doubles, 20 more than his previous high of nine in (2011-12, 2012-13). LILLARD LOOMING WITH THE ELITES: He may be entering just his third NBA season, but Damian Lillard has already put himself in elite company. Only four players in NBA history have more points (3,257) and assists (988) in their first two seasons (O. Robertson, T. Archibald, A. Iverson, L. James). In 164 career games, Lillard has averaged 19.9 points and 6.0 assists in 37.2 minutes per game.
