MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE

The Museum of The Moving Image in conjunction with The Robert N. Butler Colombia Aging Center (CAC) are joining forces to expand the museum in order to create a multi-functional museum and therapy center for aging adults. The museum will expand into the building directly behind it, currently Kauffman Studio’s Stage K, to facilitate these new programs and services. The new museum space and therapy areas will provide ways to utilize reminiscence therapy through the user’s five senses by incorporating artifacts, media and technology showcased at the Museum of The Moving Image while also continuing to educate visitors on how moving images are produced for TV, films and other media. The new museum space will integrate new technology, showcase artifacts and objects from the museum and will provide venue space, as well as areas for learning and therapy work and research. Portions of this new addition will be open to all museum patrons, including Silver, the museum’s new restaurant and bar, while other areas will specifically be utilized for therapy, research and administrative purposes.

GOLDSTEIN’S DEN

“If you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.” ― George Orwell, 1984 Inspired by the writings of George Orwell, Goldstein’s Den playfully considers the idea of a secret society plainly within sight of the world that surrounds you. With a bar, lounge and a secret room, only accessible with special key, Goldstein’s Den encourages visitors to explore the possibilities within. Designed with secret corners around each turn and irregular screened panels that promote a voyeuristic feel, this bar offers guests an experience like none other.

GEPPETTO’S TOY WORKSHOP

Geppetto’s Toy Workshop located on Broadway Avenue in New York City has been designed to evoke the imagination of the user while providing a boutique-family-style shopping experience for the consumer and supporting local manufacturing and artistry. The space focuses on the shopping experience of both the consumer and the user, aiming to create an environment that feels larger than life, as if anything can happen. As the brand emphasizes the locally sourced and manufactured element of the products, artists will often be invited to perform a reading on the second floor or run a workshop for the children in the basement. The shop will appear layered in an effort to stimulate the user and consumer to feel as though there are many unique treasures to be found. Design elements intend to engage all of the senses using auditory elements, motion, and transformation.

ESTUDIO OLAECHAU LAW OFFICE

The law firm of Estudio Olaechau, one of Peru’s largest and oldest, is opening their first office in the United States at 1095 6th Avenue in New York City. Within this space, the firm is eager to celebrate their history and culture while retaining their focus on growth and brand awareness in this new market. Upon research, most people initially think of Machu Picchu when asked about Peru. Although the firm would like to honor this part of their history, they would like to instead take the design concept of their space in a newer, fresher direction. In Peru, the spider and web represent hunting nets, and therefore they are associated with prosperity and progress. In addition, the spider image has been seen as a powerful political symbol. The concept of the web and its connection with nature is the corner stone of the design for the office and will help solidify the firm’s brand identity within the US market.

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

Doctors Without Borders is moving into a new office space at 41 Madison Avenue in New York City. They would like this location to be filled with light and have an appropriate balance between individual vs. group work spaces within an open plan design. The office needs to have multiple transitional situation rooms that can be modified based on the needs of their current projects. They would like the overall mood of the space to feel light and fresh; a mix between the functionality of the working components and the comfort of the space. Incorporating their brand identity into the space in an important factor to the overall aesthetic of the design.

Inspired by their boats and tagline, “180 Degrees from Ordinary,” Windstar Cruises’ new lobby entrance at 110 East 28th Street in New York City creates an experience for the visitor in an unexpected way.

WINDSTAR CRUISES

Common elements, like wood, metal and concrete, found on their ships and at the ports in which they dock, have been used in unique ways to create an extraordinary adventure for the visitor as they pass through the lobby. The deconstruction of each material gives the guest a sense of the inner workings of their cruise line and the unique experience each customer will have on one of their boats. The inverted sails, an iconic image of the company, helps to reinforce their brand and the core messaging of the organization.

2015 HOLIDAY HOUSE COMPETITION

QUILTING BEE SOCIETY (GERIATRIC CO-HOUSING UNITS)

RESIDENTIAL

(SPONSORED BY ROBERT ALLEN)

1. Exclusive use of Robert Allen fabrics 2. Recommended use of Robert Allen or Arteriors furniture, lighting and accessories 3. A $5,000 budget all other products (not Robert Allen or Arteriors) placed within the room 4. Easy installation and removal of all products The room that I have designed celebrates the interior designer as an artist on display. Nothing is more personal than the opportunity to shape another’s environment, and we, as interior designers, have an amazing responsibility to take a space and make it great. It is this opportunity that thrusts designers on Center Stage to be examined and appreciated for the artistry that they perform. The focal point within the room is the East wall which has been converted into a portal for an audience to look into the room and its design. Interior designers are all artists and work to transform spaces into an amazing artistic expressions. As designers, we are all putting ourselves on Center Stage, pulling back the curtains and allowing others to get a glimpse into our creation.

QUILTING BEE SOCIETY - COMMON SPACE

Nearly 115 years ago, the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church established the Quilting Bee Society focused on bringing warmth and love to those in need through handmade quilts. The society, along with the church, has decided to develop a cohousing project for its members. The 10-apartment floor with shared common space will be available to members of the society who are 65+ years old. The residents will be able to enjoy a common space which includes a large kitchen, spa, living room and activities room. The activities space has been designed so that residents and other society members can utilize the space to share in the quilting experience, as well as other activities including: exercise, exhibitions, parties, etc. Society members will be able to enjoy the community within the space while being able to share their experience and knowledge with others.
