Prepared For Growth - Irvine Nature Center's 2024 Annual Report

Page 1

PREPARED FOR GROWTH

LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

As we near our 50th year, Irvine’s priorities remain steadfast: connect more people with nature, steward our land, educate the community through the care of animals, expand our programs to meet the diversifying needs of children and the planet, create new partnerships, and broaden our visibility in the surrounding community.

I am pleased to share that we have exceeded our goals in all these areas this past year, solidifying Irvine’s position as a key destination for naturebased exploration and learning. Throughout the following pages, we aim to highlight our successes, many that you, our loyal members and donors, have helped make possible.

What may be some of the most impactful work from fiscal year 2024, however, is the effort made behind the scenes preparing for Irvine’s next chapter. Our leadership team, alongside our board of directors, has spent hours focusing on structural, financial, and staffing improvements that will secure our ability to serve the growing community for years to come.

The results of this work, I believe, will bear fruit in future years, and I am confident in reporting that as we plan to mark our golden anniversary, we are PREPARED FOR GROWTH.

With optimism and gratitude,

" You have improved my child’s life so much! And we are so happy that she had access to this life-changing experience!
— Preschool Woodpecker Tuition Assistance Program Parent

NURTURING GROWTH

Since its founding in 1975, Irvine has made it our mission to get more people outside in nature by providing opportunities to gather and explore. Especially for our youth, it has never been more important to disconnect from screens and reconnect with other people and the earth.

From the littlest learners in preschool to adults taking part in nature presentations, workshops, and events, participants of all ages are encouraged to grow with nature.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Our Nature Preschool and other early childhood education programs continue to flourish at Irvine. Preschool classes, Little Birds, Irvine’s caregiver and toddler program, and Earth Friends Homeschool were all fully enrolled with waitlists. We introduced single-day and weekend options for Little Birds, plus added a full day for Earth Friends to provide expanded opportunities for children to learn. One fifth of the students in the Nature Preschool received financial aid from the Woodpecker Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), thanks to the generosity of the Medicine Bow Fund.

ANIMAL CARE PROGRAM

We received more grant funding than ever to support our Animal Care program, enhancing our ability to care for, feed, and provide enrichment opportunities for our 50 animal residents, many of whom serve as ambassadors for our education programs on our property and throughout the community. This spring we acquired two new raptors – a Broad-winged Hawk and a Common Raven, attracting new visitors and creating teachable moments, including soliciting the public for help in selecting their names.

CONNECTION WITH OUR COMMUNITY

A big part of development and growth comes from connection with the community. We were pleased to bring back two of our very special and popular member events. The Member Square Dance and Picnic was held in December 2023, with over 120 guests enjoying great food and spirits, while learning quadrille dances. In February 2024, we held our Maple Magic Pancake Breakfast to thank our members. Irvine was packed with families enjoying a pancake feast before heading out on the trails with our naturalists to learn about the maple sugaring process.

We also hosted unique community-wide events including Indigenous Peoples’ Month, Holidays with Hoot, and Springfest which collectively attracted 500 attendees. Our spring Lunch and Learn: The Royal Connection - Spring Flowers & Queen Bumblebees, welcomed a sold-out crowd that was treated to a tea party, presentation on the relationship between bees and spring ephemerals, and tour of the Woodland Garden.

PUMPKINS ON THE GREEN

And in a milestone year, over 600 guests from around the region gathered for great food and drinks, live music, and a recordbreaking silent auction for Irvine’s 15th annual Pumpkins on the Green event in October 2023.

ADAPTING TO GROWTH

Reacting to both the growth of our community and the impact of a changing climate, Irvine has adapted by providing greater access to nature with year-round public events, expanded spaces for exploration, and increased scholarship opportunities. We have sought and received generous funding from individuals, foundations, and local businesses to serve more under-resourced neighbors from around the region.

"Our Foundation has chosen to support Irvine Nature Center for the last seven years. We have been impressed by the Center’s valuable work in environmental conservation and education, and by the professionalism of the staff. In particular, they provide a valuable service to the Baltimore area by giving schoolchildren an opportunity to experience and learn about their natural environment that many would not otherwise have.

WE HAVE ADAPTED TO GROWTH

DOUBLED SUMMER NATURE CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS

Over 750 campers participated in Irvine’s Summer Nature Camp enjoying fun-filled, nature-based adventures. Thanks to several individual donors and Foundations including The Kahlert Foundation, The Koinonia Foundation, and The Dillon Fund, we were able to nearly double camp scholarships, offering 35 to area students, including many from nearby Reisterstown and Glyndon Elementary Schools. Additionally, we are grateful to our Nature Camp sponsors: David Ross Orthodontics, Davey Mitigation, Ortho Maryland, and Northwest Hospital for their support.

EXTENDED FREE ADMISSION

Thanks to The Orokawa Foundation, Irvine continued offering Free Admission every Friday featuring Tales & Tails, our signature story-time event, select weekends throughout the year, and an entire week in April celebrating Earth Week.

REBUILT WOODLAND GARDEN

Irvine received a generous grant from the Garden Club of America to rebuild our Woodland Garden after a 2023 summer storm that brought down an enormous hickory tree striking many understory trees, shrubs and native plants. Combined with gifts from 33 individuals, this Restoration Initiative Grant allowed Irvine to replace damaged flora and signage, enabling us to rebuild this special feature on our property.

GROWTH IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

"ADDED MORE TRAILS

Irvine was the recipient of a major grant from the Maryland State Highway Administration to construct a new ¼-mile trail around our White Oak tree— the oldest tree on the property and one of the largest in the state. This grant enabled improved access and safety on our 8 miles of trails with new informational and directional signage.

RESTORED THE HAWK MEADOW

Irvine’s Natural Resources Manager, with the help of interns and volunteers, restored the Hawk Meadow this year through a process of mowing and brush hogging. If left alone, meadows would become forests, limiting biodiversity. This effort made every three years, to encourage vibrancy of meadows (of which there is a shortage in Maryland) supports plant and tree diversity, which in turn affects the insect and bird species it attracts.

I was blessed to have both my 8-year-old daughter and my 5-year-old son attend this summer via a scholarship for both of them. Difficulties in life happen and sometimes it takes a while to rebound and set one's feet again. Time is a healer.

I would like to provide sincere words of thanks to all who made this experience unforgettable for both my children.

— Parent of Summer Nature Camp Scholarship Recipient

INSPIRING GROWTH

For many with whom Irvine interacts, we have just a few hours to inspire a connection with nature. Whether it be a field trip, volunteer opportunity, or a special event that brings someone to our 211 acres, we strive to inspire a continued interest in the environment with impactful experiences and invitations to return.

FIELD TRIPS

Our educators and volunteer naturalists led 2,456 students on field trips, delivered Nature in the Classroom to 3,184 students and led Eco-Explorers After-School Club in 15 schools, serving more than 550 students. It is thanks to the generosity of 16 funders that Irvine is equipped with the resources to provide these programs to many Title I schools, reaching students from under-resourced neighborhoods throughout the region.

"The students loved getting to try out new things and hands-on exploration.

— 3rd Grade Teacher, Hampden Elementary School

VOLUNTEER AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Irvine’s new Volunteer Manager, Rebecca Sparks, has infused new energy and ideas into our Volunteer and Internship program, making it even more meaningful for individuals and companies to devote time and talent to helping Irvine in a variety of ways. Individual volunteers have logged over 3,500 hours and 35 volunteer groups have contributed over 700 hours. Student interns have assisted with Eco-Explorers, Nature Preschool, Land Stewardship, and Animal Care. Groups helped with meaningful land projects including our reforestation project — planting, mulching, and caging new trees — and restoration work at the Native American Site. Plus, on a rainy day in April 2024, 70 volunteers joined Irvine staff in collecting 1,240 pounds of trash from nearby roads during Project Clean Stream.

"I am learning animal care skills that will assist me for the rest of my life and allow me to pursue a degree in Zoology. I have built both confidence and enjoyment expanding my horizons and embracing the gifts that the natural world has to offer.

I have never felt more excited about my future… and it’s all thanks to this outstanding organization!

EAT, DRINK & LEARN

We continued our popular Eat, Drink & Learn adult nature series and we thank Lumina Solar for their renewed sponsorship of the program. For the 2023-2024 season, much of the focus was on the impacts of climate change, inspiring curiosity and a desire to take action.

WEAVING NATURE

New to our property — Weaving Nature — an art installation using invasive plants and other recycled items, illustrates the human impact on air, water, and land. Local artist, David Bacharach, and documentary filmmaker, Jeff Bieber, spent 8 months and nearly a thousand hours collaborating with staff, volunteers, and engaging homeschool students in clearing the land, then fabricating Hugel mounds. This project has exceeded our expectations from the educational value to the environmental benefits.

PLANNING FOR GROWTH

For over 18 months, we have laid the groundwork for an expansion and renovation project with the goal of constructing a new two-story building adjacent to our current Weinberg Education Center. This new space will house our growing Nature Preschool and feature a permanent year-round event space. This project grew out of the demand for enrollment in our Nature Preschool and the need for a climate-controlled event and program space. Renovations to our existing spaces include plans to enhance the Exhibit Hall, animal enclosures, and animal care room to offer increased educational and enrichment experiences.

QR

The Cultivating Community Campaign is all about providing access to nature for more people on our property and expanding our programming, events, and activities to meet the needs of our members. Serving thousands of diverse audiences each year on our campus through robust nature-based programming and events, Irvine must make the necessary changes to manage recent growth in order to remain a vital community resource for years to come.

To date we have raised $4.9 million from visionary individuals, foundations, Baltimore County, and State of Maryland. We would like to thank our campaign chairs and dedicated Trustees, Anna Smith and

George Reynolds, for leading our fundraising efforts. We'd also like to recognize Brooks Paternotte, Executive Director, Courtney Sagal, Deputy Director, and Jack Finney, Facilities Committee Chair, who have spent months researching and meeting with architects, engineers, funding sources, and all internal stakeholders to determine viability, priorities, and critical needs.

In addition, Irvine welcomed a new Director of Development, Katie Remenapp, former Vice President of Development at the American Heart Association. In a full-circle moment, Katie has returned to Irvine having interned while she was a student at Stevenson University in 2010.

As we near 2025, Irvine is PREPARED FOR GROWTH and excited for what the future holds for our growing organization.

"I am pleased to support this exciting expansion project at Irvine to provide access to nature for more children, adults, and families throughout the region. Irvine is a place that is very special to me; I’ve witnessed the significant growth in programming over the years and look forward to the growth that is to come.

This much-needed new building will provide the Nature Preschool and early childhood education with a central hub for programming and provide a permanent space for nature programs and special events serving the community at large.

DONORS

Thank you to our loyal and generous donors for your support in helping Irvine provide access to nature on our property and in the community over the past year. Donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations are crucial to the programming we offer, the staff we hire, the care for animals we provide, and the maintenance of trails and grounds we steward.

IN MEMORIAM

Nancy B. Allchin 1924-2024

Nancy started volunteering at Irvine as a naturalist in the early 1980s and then served on the board from 1987 to 2005 including a term as board President. Nancy continued volunteering at Irvine into her eighties sharing her passion for nature with countless children and adults.

William L. Balfour 1935-2024

Bill served on Irvine’s board from 1997 to 2010 spanning the transition from St. Tim’s to the Caves Valley. He was instrumental in the planning of Irvine’s new site serving as Vice President and President during those important years.

Robert H. Johnson 1947-2024

Bobby was involved with Irvine since its founding, serving first as Executive Director and later as a board member from 1980 to 2005. Bobby was a force for nature before it was fashionable and we are incredibly grateful for his vision.

Ellen Harvey Kelly 1929-2023

Ellie served on Irvine’s board from 1987-2008 and helped craft our master plan. Today much of it is reality. She had a knack for bringing people together to do good, and we are so grateful to have known her and benefited from her passion and enthusiasm.
