Welcome to 716 Health! This educational guide was created to help provide you with the science behind essential oils and help you understand how to use them safely.

716Health Vision Statement: Striving to be the WNY’s leader in client experience, clinical outcomes, research and education in regards to essential oils.
Why 716 Health Promotes Young Living Products: Our founders have spent over 10 years researching and using essential oils; however, for the last 2-3 years, they researched companies. They thought of producing their own oils; this process is very advanced to get the proper quality. After much consideration, we chose Young Living products after our extensive research on oil companies and their production methods. We are urging you to do your own research; we are simply a guide to help you on finding the right company for yourself. Young Living is a network marketing company; which almost us from choosing them; however, after our research we simply couldn't find another oil we felt comfortable selling and donating to our clients, who are often coping with an illness.
Seed to Seal is truly what makes Young Living different. Young Living owns thousands of acres of sustainable, organic farmland and we are the world’s largest producer of Essential Oils. Young Living has 10 farms and distilleries around the world, no other company has that. Young Living has farms worldwide so that plants can be raised in their native environments. For example, our trees at our Frankincense farm in Oman or Ylang Ylang trees at our Ecuador farm in South America won’t grow here in the US.
We also have certified co-op farms whose growing processes meet Young Living’s strict quality standards. Young Living is open and love for their members to be a part of the seed plantings all the way to harvest and distillation. Young Living uses its own internal labs, in addition to third-party audits, to verify that international purity standards are met and surpassed. Anyone can visit a Young Living farm. Young Living is the only essential oil company to have their own farms. They love visitors! Now, the key to producing therapeutic-grade essential oils is to preserve as many of the delicate compounds within the Essential Oil as possible. These fragile constituents are easily destroyed so Young Living oils are steam-distilled in stainless steel chambers at low pressure and low temperature. Citrus oil is cold pressed from the rind. Young Living only uses plant material free of agrichemicals and steam distillation to end up with pure oil. Cheap perfume grade oils have leftover chemical solvents from distillations in them.
Seed We research plant species that offer the optimal therapeutic benefits, identify species with experts and document their source, and monitor the ongoing cultivation process to ensure the chosen plant species is used.
Cultivate Young Living’s farms, located around the globe, are dedicated to growing and perfecting their knowledge of soil preparation, balance of sun and water, responsible weed and pest control, and wildcraft harvesting ensures that stringent standards are met.
Distill Young Living’s proprietary low-temperature, low-pressure steam distillation process ensures that the beneficial plant compounds in every batch of essential oil remain uncompromised during the extraction process. This process is completed at just the right time to ensure all beneficial constituents are present to maximize the quality of the oil.
Test Each essential oil must pass Young Living’s stringent testing to ensure the optimal bioactive natural compounds are present. Young Living uses its own internal labs, in addition to third-party audits, to verify that international purity and potency standards are met and surpassed. Each oil is tested during various stages of distillation to determine the release of different plant constituents.
Seal Young Living completes the Seed to Seal process by carefully sealing and inspecting each bottle of essential oil at our clean-room facility and shipping to members worldwide. Individual bottle labels are encoded with detailed tracking information that allows Young Living to trace each bottle of essential oil back to its source.
The history of essential oils goes way back and is very interesting: Like gold, essential oils have been around for thousands of years. And like gold, essential oils experience occasions when they appear to draw little interest or are virtually unknown. But, also like gold, the interest in essential oils surges when people are looking for reliability and value.
The Egyptians The ancient Egyptians were known to use oils, herbs, and aromatic plants for medicinal purposes. A scroll dating back to 1500 B.C. reveals hundreds of remedies using oils. And when King Tut's tomb was opened in 1922, 50 alabaster jars for holding oils were discovered. The valued oils were no longer present because they were stolen by robbers who left the gold of the tomb behind.
The Bible The Bible describes how a plague was stopped with an offering of incense, and how the temple was prepared with aromatic oils. In the New Testament we learn that the Christ child was given frankincense and myrrh, and later in His ministry was anointed with very costly spikenard. The scriptures contain a rich history involving biblical oils.
The Arabians The Arabians, around 500 B.C., developed a thriving frankincense trade. Demand was so great that the trade route was known as the “Frankincense Trail. Much later, the Arabian physician Avicenna improved the distillation process for essential oils and used them extensively in his medical practice.
The Greeks and Romans The Greeks and Romans were also known to use essential oils. It is believed that Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine, halted a devastating plague in Athens with aromatics. An ancient Greek Physician, Dioscorides, wrote a book describing methods still used by aromatherapists today. The Romans used to purify public buildings by diffusing essential oils, and also used them in their steam baths to maintain good health. A number of notable historical figures are known to have a fondness for essential oils. Queen Hatshepsut, Alexander the Great, and Napolean all sought to obtain and use essential oils.
The Emergence of Pharmaceuticals In the late 1800s laboratories began to isolate the active elements of natural remedies and started to reproduce them synthetically. By the early 1900s the public became impressed by the synthetic manufacture of drugs, and pharmaceutical companies became major sponsors of medical schools. This explains the huge dominance of pharmaceuticals in our own day. And why essential oils were largely forgotten.
The Re-Emergence of Essential Oils But things of value have a way of coming back. And for this reason the history of essential oils continues. Essential oils made their modern comeback in France. In 1910 Dr. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse was covered by burning substances as a result of an explosion in his laboratory. Immediately he put his hands in a lavender rinse, and the gangrenous gasification of the tissue stopped and healing began.
Modern History of Essential Oils Shortly thereafter, essential oils began to be used during World War I, due to their anti-bacterial and wound healing properties. Another French doctor, Jean Valnet, used essential oils to treat battlefield injuries in World War II. Since that time, one of Dr. Valnet's students, Jean Lapraz, discovered that microbes could not survive in the presence of certain essential oils. In the middle 1980s research began that led to the recovery of essential oils in the United States. Hospitals and clinics are increasingly using aromatics these days. This trend in the recent history of essential oils shows that those things that are of value are sure to attract attention, even after being ignored for a long time. It's true for gold, and it's true for essential oils.
What is an Essential Oil? Essential oils carry the physical properties of flowers and plants in a highly concentrated form. Through the different processes of distillation, the volatile constituents of the plant’s oil are extracted from its flowers, leaves, branches, or roots. Essential oils carry biologically active volatile compounds in a very concentrated form that exhibit therapeutic benefits in very small amounts. The most common groups of chemical components found in essential oils are terpenes, alcohols, esters, ketones, aldehydes, and phenols. Most essential oils are antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The antioxidant value in some essential oils alone is absolutely amazing, just an ounce of Clove Oil has the antioxidant capacity of 450 lbs of carrots, 120 quarts of blueberries, or 48 gallons of beet juice. There are three types of terpenes contains in essential oils: Phenylpropanoids (also called Hemiterpenes), Monoterpenes, and Sesquiterpenes.
Phenylpropanoids: Create conditions unfriendly to bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They are found in Clove (90%), Cassia (80%), Basil (75%), Cinnamon (73%), Oregano (60%), Anise (50%), Peppermint (25%). Most importantly, phenylpropanoids clean the receptor sites on the cells. Without clean receptor sites, cells cannot communicate, and the body malfunctions, resulting in diseases.
Monoterpenes: They are found in most essential oils. While offering a variety of healing properties, the most important ability of the monoterpenes is that they can reprogram miswritten information in the cellular memory. With improper coding in the DNA, cells malfunction and diseases result, such as cancer.
Sesquiterpenes: Found in Cedarwood (98%), Vetiver (97%), Spikenard (93%), Sandalwood (Aloes) 90%, Black Pepper (74%), Patchouli (71%), Myrrh (62%), and Ginger (59%), Frankincense (8%), these molecules deliver oxygen to your tissues. Viruses, bacteria, and cancer have a difficult time surviving in an oxygenated environment. Sesquiterpenes can also erase or deprogram miswritten codes in the DNA.
Essential oils can penetrate the cellular wall and dispel viruses, whereas antibiotics can only kill bacteria outside of the cellular wall. One drop of essential oils contains enough molecules to cover every cell in our bodies. Just one molecule can open a receptor site in our bodies and communicate with the DNA to alter cellular function.
More Oily Facts: There are approximately 40 million trillion molecules in one drop of essential oil (that’s approximately 40,000 molecules for each cell in the average human body). They are so small, that they enter your body through the skin and go everywhere in your body. Essential oils have an incredible ability to enter the body through the lungs and disperse throughout the body in a way that most other medicines are unable to achieve! The olfactory system includes all physical organs or cells relating to, or contributing to, the sense of smell. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain. Molecules inhaled through the nose or a mouth is also carried to the lungs and interacts with the respiratory system. Thus, inhaled essential oils can affect the body through several systems and pathways. During inhalation, odor molecules travel through the nose and affect the brain through a variety of receptor sites, one of which is the limbic system, which is commonly referred to as the "emotional brain.“ The limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance (Higley & Higley, 1998). This relationship helps explain why smells often trigger emotions. Knowing this, we can hypothesize how inhalation of essential oils can have some very profound physiological and psychological effects! Oral ingestion of essential oils is NOT recommended for the general public because a great deal of essential oils knowledge and expertise is necessary for safe practice. The ingestion of essential oils is not common practice in the US. In France, it is more common, but only when specially trained physicians and pharmacists prescribe and dispense them. There are several reasons for caution, including the following: Some essential oils can be toxic to the liver or kidneys when ingested. Chemical breakdown of essential oils during gastric processing can change the effects. There could be potential drug interactions. Our skin is somewhat permeable. The active chemicals in essential oils are absorbed just like the ingredients in common pharmaceuticals such as hormone replacement therapy cream and nicotine patches. Different factors can affect the absorption of essential oils through the skin. If you massage the area first, it will increase circulation to that area, thereby causing an increase in absorption of essential oils. Heat will likewise increase circulation and thus enhance absorption. Some researchers report that essential oils may be more readily absorbed from skin locations with greater concentrations of sweat glands and hair follicles, such as the genitals, head, soles, palms, and armpits (Battaglia, 2003).
How to use essential oils safely: Inhalation Inhaling essential oils heightens the senses and can trigger numerous desired responses in the body. Follow these guidelines when using essential oils for inhalation: · Inhale directly—simply smell them. · Diffuse the oils using a diffuser, which disperses the oil in a micro-fine vapor into the air. The diffuser will not heat the oils, thus ensuring full benefits, as extreme heat can damage important constituents in the oil. · Use with a humidifier. Put a tissue or small cloth, sprinkled with a few drops of oil, in front of the escaping steam. (Do not put essential oil in your humidifier. It will float on top of the water instead of rising with the water vapor and may cause damage to your humidifier.) · Carefully pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of essential oil. Cover your head and bowl in a tent-like fashion with a towel. Breathe deeply and slowly.
Topical Application Topical application of many essential oils is safe and can offer an enjoyable, relaxing experience. For topical application, follow these simple steps: · Carefully tip the oil bottle and place 2–3 drops in the palm of your hand or directly on the desired application area. · If dropping oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto the desired point of application. If applying directly to the desired area, use your hand to massage the oil in a circular motion into the skin. Repeat if desired. Caution: Essential oils are very potent and some may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply pure vegetable oil such as V-6™ Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex or use coconut oil to help dilute the oil.
Internal Consumption Many essential oils make excellent food flavorings or dietary supplements. To use essential oils for internal consumption, Young Living suggests these methods: · Place several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow the capsule with water. · Add 1–2 drops to a glass of water or rice milk. · Put 1–2 drops onto a piece of bread or add to your meals when cooking. · Add 1–2 drops onto a teaspoon of Young Living Blue Agave and swallow. · Drop directly onto the tongue and swallow. · Exercise extreme caution when using this method. Many essential oils are potent and should be tested by pouring a single drop onto a spoon and tasting a small portion to determine the amount of oil to be used. NOT ALL OILS SHOULD BE CONSUMED!
