An IDEC Student Design competition project done my Senior year. The Living Breathing Vocational Center is for young adults with ASD, sensory sensitivities, and other cognitive disabilities who are ready to start living on their own. The design of the building is approachable, comforting, and relaxing for guests of the space to feel at ease about this big step in their lives. A mix of sensory spaces and ones that invite them to feel more comfortable in a less controlled environment, the Living Breathing center opens the students’ eyes to the real world without overwhelming them.
PROGRAMS USED: SKETCHUP / PODIUM / ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE
LIVING BREATHING IS A CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING THAT WILL GIVE YOUNG ADULTS WITH AUTISM, DOWNS, FAS, AND OTHER COGNITIVE DISABILITIES THE CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO LIVE ON THEIR OWN THROUGH REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE. THE INTERIORS OF THE SPACE HAVE AN EMPATHETIC, RELAXED APPROACH THAT WOULD BE SUITABLE TO INDIVIDUALS WITH SENSORY SENSITIVITIES - LIKE USING SOUNDPROOF FLOORING IN LEARNING AND LIVING ENVIRONMENTS, SOFT FABRIC ON COMFORTABLE FURNISHINGS, MATTE FINISHES, AND DIMMABLE HALOGEN LIGHTING THROUGHOUT. IT DOES NOT REMOVE ALL SENSITIVE STIMULI THOUGH - DONE WITH PURPOSE TO ENABLE INDIVIDUALS WITH ASD AND SENSORY SENSITIVITIESTOBUILDATOLERANCETOCERTAINENVIRONMENTSTHATARENOTDESIGNATEDASSENSORYSPACES.
TRAINING OFFICE
RECEPTION
THE IDEA BEHIND LIVING BREATHING WAS DERIVED FROM TWO DIFFERENT CONCEPTS. THE IDEA TO START LIVING AND WORKING INDEPENDENTLY, AND THE NOTION OF FEELING SAFE AND SECURE IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT MIGHT BE OVERWHELMING AT FIRST - ESPECIALLY FOR YOUNG ADULTS THAT HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED WORK TRAINING BEFORE OR LIVING ON THEIR OWN. USING AN EMPATHETIC VIEWPOINT, THE SPACE IS DESIGNED AS A SENSE OF SECURITY. A SPACE WHERE INDIVIDUALS CAN CELEBRATE MOVING INTO A NEW PART OF THEIR LIVES WITH A POSITIVE, RELAXED MINDSET - A “BREATH OF FRESH AIR.” HENCE, COMING TOGETHER TO FORM ‘LIVING BREATHING’. THE USE OF WOOD MATERIALS GIVE ANOTHER DEFINITION TO THE CONCEPT OF ‘LIVING’ BY BRINGING IN A NATURAL ELEMENT TO EACH ROOM OF THE CENTER. IT CAN BE SEEN WITHIN THE FLOORING, EITHER BY THE USE OF NATURAL HARDWOOD IN THE LOBBY AND OFFICES, OR THE SOFT FOAM TILES LOCATED IN THE SENSORY ROOM AND FLEX USE SPACES. THE SOFT FOAM TILES ARE DURABLE, LIGHTWEIGHT, WATER RESISTANT, REDUCE SOUND, AND ARE USED AS INSULATION FROM THE COLD CONCRETE UNDERNEATH, AN EXCEPTIONAL ALTERNATIVE TO HARDWOOD FOR THE SENSORY AND EXERCISE ROOMS. ALL LIGHTING FIXTURES IN LIVING BREATING ARE DIMMABLE. USING HALOGEN BULBS THAT CREATE A SUBTLE, LESS STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENT FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SENSORY SENSITIVITIES. IN THE SENSORY ROOM, LED COLOR CHANGING BULBS ARE FIXED IN FROSTED GLASS FLOOR LAMPS AND WALL SCONCES LOCATED NEXT TO, AND INSIDE, THE CIRCULAR TREE READING NOOK CREATING A SOFT, CUSTOMIZABLE LIGHTING EXPRIENCE FOR THE YOUNG ADULTS OCCUPYING THE AREA. THE FLOW OF THE INTERIOR IS ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE AND IS EASY TO NAVIGATE BY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LARGE OPEN HALLWAY THAT LEADS TO EVERY ROOM THAT THE GUESTS OF THE CENTER WILL BE OCCUPYING. CUSTOM CEILING LIGHT FIXTURES GUIDE THE STUDENTS LINE OF SIGHT FROM THE LOBBY, DOWN THE HALLWAY, AND OUT TO THE EXTERIOR WHERE THE SENSORY GARDEN IS LOCATED. THE MANAGER’S OFFICE IS ADJACENT TO THE LOBBY IF QUESTIONS NEEDED TO BE ANSWERED FROM THE RECEPTIONISTS. THE KITCHEN, SENSORY ROOM, AND WORK TRAINING SPACES ARE STRATEGICALLY PLACED IN AREAS OF THE BUILDING THAT DO NOT HAVE NATURAL LIGHT COMING THROUGH. THIS PROVIDES AN ENHANCED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS LIKE LIGHT PATTERNS COMING THROUGH WINDOWS ONTO DESKS OR WORK SPACES, AND CAN ALLOW FOR COMPLETE DARKNESS IF NEEDED.

SENSORY ROOM
OUTDOOR SENSORY SPACE
THE SENSORY ROOM IS DESIGNED FOR YOUNG ADULTS TO PROVIDE A MOMENT OF CALMNESS AND COMFORT IF THE INDIVIDUALS ARE OVERWHELMED. IT INVITES THEM TO ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AND RELAXATION TECHNIQUES. THE MAIN GOAL OF THE SENSORY ROOM IS TO GET THE YOUNG ADULTS INVOLVED IN GARDENING AND THE BENEFITS THAT COME FROM DOING SO - AND HOPEFULLY BRINGING THIS WITH THEM INTO THE REAL WORLD AT THEIR HOMES, WHERE THEY CAN RELAX AFTER WORK IN THEIR OUTDOOR GARDENS. THERE IS A STATION WHERE STUDENTS CAN PLANT SEEDLINGS IN SMALL CONTAINERS, WATER AND WATCH THEM GROW OVER TIME AS THEY COME BACK TO THE CENTER. LATER PLANTING THEM IN THE GARDEN OUT BACK OR TAKING THEM HOME WITH THEM TO PLANT IN THEIR OWN GARDENS. THE COLOR PALLETTE IS FULL OF RICH GREENS, LIGHT WOODS, AND BROWNS, CELEBRATING THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE EARTH. WITH THE USE OF THE SWING, BEAN BAG CHAIRS, AND SHAG CARPET SQUARES THAT RESEMBLE GRASS TO EMPHASIZE THE SENSE OF TOUCH LIKE ALL SENSORY ROOMS, IT BECOMES A SAFE, RESTORATIVE ENVIRONMENT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS. THIS NOT ONLY GETS THE STUDENTS TO BE ACTIVE AND SELF DETERMINED, BUT IT INCREASES THEIR FINE MOTOR SKILLS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE LONG RUN, WHICH IS THE KEY OF THE LIVING BREATHING CENTER. THE OUTDOOR PATIO SPACE IS DIVIDED BY THE PATHWAY THAT LEADS THE INDIVIDUALS FROM THE MAIN HALLWAY OR MOCK APARTMENT. THE PERGOLA PROVIDES A CONTEMPLATION SPACE WHILE STILL ENGAGING IN A SENSORY EXPERIENCE BY THE USE OF SOFT PILLOWS AND HEAT SENSED BY THE FIREPLACE. THE CURTAINS GIVE THE CONTEMPLATION SPACE PRIVACY IF NEEDED. BOTH THE ACCESSIBLE GARDEN AND WALK THROUGH GARDENS PROVIDE COLORFUL FLOWERS AND HERBS THAT ENGAGE THE YOUNG ADULTS IN THE FIVE SENSES. SOME EXAMPLES FOR TOUCH ARE LAMBS EAR AND SUCCULENTS SMELL, INCLUDES LAVENDER PLANTS, TOMATOES, AND GARDENIA TREES. TASTE INCORPORATES HERBS AND FRUITS LIKE BASIL AND STRAWBERRIES. PLANTS LIKE GRASSES AND SUNFLOWERS ENGAGE SOUND AND SIGHT.

The two perspectives shown are the main sensory rooms of Living Breathing. They are designed for young adults of the center to get the hands-on experience of how to garden - with a multi-sensory approach. They can take what they have learned with them to their new homes. As seen on the floor plan, the backyard was carefully designed with two types of sensory gardens. A walk-through garden, and universally designed custom handicap roll-in gardens so that everyone visiting has the same opportunities to learn about the plants.

Located in Morgantown, West Virginia, Fresh is more than just a restaurant. Fresh provides new jobs, helps local farmers with supplying fresh food to the guests, and hires local bands to come and play to reach a higher audience. Consider it a ‘fresh’ start for many that are struggling in Morgantown. The design concept spun off the idea of 1920’s fresh Art Deco style. The golden streamline style is carried throughout the space, while bringing in new MEDIUMS USED: PENCIL / PRISMACOLOR modern fixtures and materials. MARKERS The lobby’s main entrance greets guests with a feature wall made of wood and uplit curved metal, reflecting the beauty of the West Virginia mountains. Ample seating and access to the bar lets guests have multiple routes to navigate through the space.

Every room within Fresh is meant to give guests a different experience. For example, the private dining room is for more intimate conversations and a fine-dining experience. The lounge and upstairs seating areas are meant to be more relaxed, where you can engage with a group of friends and listen to the live music playing on stage. The use of mixed materials, custom lighting, and lots of golden tones give the restaurant a luxury feel within the city.

Christian Help is a donated historic building which is now a designated place for those in need in the city of Morgantown. With a focus on space planning, functionality and flexibility, the design outcome is a true store setting allowing visitors and clients to feel comfortable and welcomed. The design uses re-purposed and local materials such as reused glass and re-claimed wood in order to stay on budget. Mobile storage and display racks allow for interchangeable presentation depending on specific donations and functions needed. Accessible and approachable, the Christian Help Center continues to provide to the best of its ability. PROGRAMS USED: SKETCHUP / PODIUM / ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE

The main design decisions I made within our group project included working on the exterior, the lobby, and the new food wall system. The food wall solves their existing problem of food placement, and how the clients could access the food that is donated daily to the center. Easily seen from all employees and guests of the center, the food wall became a focal point for the center. The exterior has an all new feel with the black metal mesh and black wood paneling, complementing the freshly painted white stone. The cross is an architectural and spiritual element that includes LED lights inside, setting Morgantown’s Chestnut Street aglow at night.

Helping Hand is a learning center for volunteers embarking on service trips to the Amazon Rainforest. The main concepts of Helping Hand stemmed from wanting to design an educational environment that would excite the volunteers as well as have them eager to learn. The lobby and seating areas invite the volunteers to meet, and get to know the indigenous people of the Amazon through the artifacts, art pieces, and information regarding their rich history. The apartment bedroom is a space the director can come home to and feel at peace. There is ample trunk space to keep their memories from the trip as side tables, and a walk-in closet for abundant clothing storage if the director had to stay for extended periods of time. An interior courtyard adjacent to the large classroom engages students to take part in a hands-on gardening experience to learn about how the indigenous grow crops. A water stream located under glass flooring connects the garden to the rest of the space and leads the group to more of the artifacts and art pieces.

The Saggio Residence went under a full remodel - reconfiguring problem areas of the home so the client and her family could have a better sense of well-being and belonging in what was a dated, settled-in Cape Cod. The new design carries the atmosphere of its’ past, but makes what was ordinary about the home, extraordinary. With the use of more tactile materials and furnishings, and finding solutions for previous architectural disadvantages - the new home has a more modern humanistic approach.

Stepping out of my comfort zone with a black-and-white focus on the kitchen gives it a more glamorous approach, as well as being a functional one, with a better use of storage and space. The den serves as a multi functional space for gathering, relaxation, and office work. Slanted ceilings in the bedroom created a challenge, but after a lot of reconfiguration, it serves as a more relaxed, open space to come home to.

PERSPECTIVE OF: KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM
Driven towards brightening up the kitchen to create a more vibrant cooking and entertaining space, I took a unique spin on regular cabinetry by painting the cabinets a teal blue. A more efficient kitchen layout provides room for multiple people of the family to cook at once in the small space given. The dining room that once contained an out-of-place built in bookcase, transformed into what is now a built in seating and storage bench - more appropriate for the dining area. With ample storage being added back in with two side buffets, the family occupying the home has room for all of their china-ware, dining sets, and beyond.
