As an artist I am in a constant tug-of-war. Tradition and classicism tug at my shirt-tail and heart while ideas of something new continually excite and inspire. Inspired however equally by established ideas and ideals as well as the idea of tearing those ideas apart I try to find myself. Its all I can do to strike a balance. We must learn from those who have learned before, but we really know nothing until we step beyond the box of our predecessors. Caught as I am, I can do nothing but push the edge and hold the line.

Warehouse Slack Aerospace Town House Bamboo Liner Notes

[Warehouse]

|Structure| The idea here is structure. This warehouse was found as an empty brick and steel box, many decades vacant but still smelling of its well-oiled and mechanized childhood. Using the industrial queues taken from the building’s roots and construction we translated the old space into a residence worthy of and in harmony with the building. Everything in this home is based on the idea of structure and the forms which follow. There are no mysterious shells or seamless facades here. Glass on the kitchen table allows the table’s architecture to become that of its legs themselves, while above, hung lights become a smaller part of the larger steel grid from which they hang. Even the low kitchen cabinets literally stand alone on their own legs. This home has not just been designed to match the warehouse. This home has become the warehouse.

[Aero Space Chair]

One afternoon, I imagined the early days of flight- the dawn of the great age of travel. A solo draftsman sits alone at his desk in a mass of still air at one end of a quiet air plane hangar. Sketches and the fevered yet precise mathematics of aeronautics are scribbled on papers strewn about his oversized desk. In the quiet, he drafts templates and for a brand new canvas winged flying machine. His arms are busy with tools and a pencil. He says nothing. Sun slots a skylight in the hangar’s roof and begins to crawl across the concrete floor until it touches his chair. This is his chair...

[Liner Notes]

Using the photographs, diagrams and recordings you sent I have

created Liner Notes quite specific to this November’s performance... The arch of Notes will create a sort of room around the musicians and being in the center, the musicians and more accurately Ryan, become the focal point. In essence, Notes will create an entirely new performance environment that serves to both focus attention to the music being made as well as break the mold of the music hall and add aesthetic energy otherwise not present.
