New Saudi hotel preserves heritage site in Samhan District D’Appolonia, the independent engineering consulting company of RINA Group, has been appointed as lead consultant for the design of a new 5-star heritage hotel in the historical Samhan District of Ad’Diriyah, Riyadh by Nuzul Saudi Heritage Hospitality Company, established as an initiative led by the Saudi Commission for Tourism & National Heritage (SCTNH) to maintain national heritage through utilizing of some historical sites and buildings across the kingdom as hotels specialized in heritage hospitality. This project, which aims to bring together the historical look and feel of approximately 40 historic mud buildings in the Samhan District with a modern 5-star hotel, is under the supervision of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, and is the first hospitality related renovation project in the Country. Following D’Appolonia’s appointment in November 2015, work on the hotel design is currently underway. D’Appolonia will provide engineering services up to detailed design development, and support Nuzul Hospitality with technical supervision and recommendations for construction according to the BREEAM International 2013 scheme and D’Appolonia’s Quality Management System. The project area sits inside the UNESCO buffer zone; so all techniques used to restore buildings also need to be compliant with UNESCO protocols. Andrea Tomarchio, Project Manager, D’Appolonia said, “We are pleased to be able

8

to preserve the integrity and heritage of these historic buildings. Ensuring that the design is environmentally friendly and energy efficient has been a key consideration in making the site available for modern use in a sustainable way, that will mean it lasts for years to come.” Alessandro Odasso, Infrastructure and Transport Business Development Manager, D’Appolonia noted, “Our long-standing expertise in heritage requalification engineering lent itself perfectly to this project. We have carried out many similar design and supervision projects in historic sites of Italy and in the hospitality industry, providing us with extensive experience for this design project.” The proposed hotel design includes a souk in which traditional goods will be marketed and a museum area where traditional construction systems will be displayed and workshops can be conducted to teach restoration techniques, including those used to restore the Samhan District. This unique experience will highlight the restoration of the heritage site and reflect the country’s traditions, origins and culture. These are key elements in passing technical knowledge and skills down to future generations, which, due to the sustainable design of the hotel, can be taught for many years to come. ASAS Omrania, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and AR&P Architecture, Italy, are working with D’Appolonia on this project. This partnership has previously proved successful on a project for the

design of the new headquarters for the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution in Riyadh. Combining the three companies’ expertise allows them to provide Saudi clients complete and fully integrated engineering and architecture services. This is why D’Appolonia hopes these partnerships will continue in the future. D’Appolonia S.p.A provides integrated engineering services to the public and private markets in the areas of the environment, oil and gas, infrastructure and transport, electronics and telecommunications. D’Appolonia is part of the RINA Group, a leading international classification, verification and certification provider. www.dappolonia.it RINA is a multi-national group, which delivers verification, certification, conformity assessment, marine classification, environmental enhancement, product testing, site and vendor supervision, training and engineering consultancy across a wide range of industries and services. Organizational Purpose – learnings form the world of Landscaping

By: Michael Mascarenhas CEO- Desert Group

10

Landscaping. This very word conjures up images of design, green, blue, aesthetics and a “bringing to life” factor. In this region, like in many others, the one thing that brings a finished building or structure to life is its landscaping. It adds to the “wow” factor. Yet landscaping is one of those activities that begins at the very end of a program of works. The last mile in many ways. Landscaping begins when most of the structure has been constructed and everyone is in a tearing hurry to hand over the site, at the earliest. Can you imagine the flurry of activity then, on a site, once that last big activity needs to begin? Most projects are at that point of time run its length of budgeted time, exhausted all slack and are looking at possible penalties if delays are exacerbated. The level of pressure faced by a landscaping team is immense, almost unbearable, at that point of time. It requires all employees associated with the project to go beyond the call of duty, work against painful deadlines and yet deliver a quality product. Desert Group has been doing this for 28 years and have even faced many a situation where we have been called in, when others, have failed to deliver. Desert Group is one of the largest concentrically diversified group with green and blue at its core. With a new strategic redirection, the group is at the forefront of employee engagement, innovation and customer focus. General Manager at Desert Landscape a subsidiary of Desert Group, Malay Shah says, “That’s twice the pressure we must work under and deliver a quality service within given deadlines that are at times very challenging.” So what is the one big factor that drives a team to such levels of passion and commitment repeatedly? What causes the team to bond and be focused on the end goal and consistently deliver against all odds, iconic projects time and again? We have put much thought into this at Desert Group and have concluded that this competitive edge comes from our organizational purpose. At Desert Group, we continue to hold true to the vision that fuelled our strategy when we started. We wanted to dramatically transform an arid, desert into

a lush green landscape by infusing creative design and technical expertise in the horticulture and water scape industry. We realized, that we were literally enhancing the land and by extension, the lives of the people who live in the region. We built our businesses to meet the needs of people – people who are passionate about enjoying their unique lifestyles. At Desert Group, all of our products are geared to satisfying the needs of our customers. The team members actually love going the extra mile to enhance the lives of the people they come into contact with. We have outgrown the vision of just transforming an arid desert into a larger purpose. The world is now our focus and we will continue to hold true to our convictions to enhance the lives of people all over the world. There are over six billion people worldwide, each have a distinct lifestyle that they want to live. At Desert Group, we are on a quest to become the best group of lifestyle companies with the ultimate goal of enhancing their lives. We are confident we will achieve this goal because we have a team who love what they do and have made a promise to provide simple lifestyle solutions while creating unforgettable experiences for our customer so they continue to do business with us again and again. Therefore, instilling a sense of purpose within your organization has tremendous benefits. However, it is not an easy task. It is hard work and it must be practiced and lived daily. The purpose has to be genuine and inspiring to employees at all levels. It must be something that resonates with each employee. Only then will each employee feel connected to every other member of staff and to the organization as a whole. Employee engagement rests on a purpose. We must be prepared for the new organization where talent is nurtured and encouraged to be the best in what they do. This new organization will have to continuously innovate to stay ahead. It will have to define and redefine its role daily. Self-reflection will be critical for all. As leaders we will have to develop organizational structures and teams to enhance employee engagement. An engaged workforce where the question “why we do what we do” is encouraged and respected will only be possible if there is a larger purpose and a reason for the organization to exist. It’s critical that companies develop its purpose if they want to improve employee outcome. So do you think it’s time for your organization to have a purpose?

I Urban Environment

Designing Urban Open Spaces

(In neighborhood scale) By: Peyman Soudi Landscape Design Manager Parsons

The notable increases in population and mobilization toward urban centers have accompanied dramatic changes in energy use and consumption of food, energy and materials. Associated air/water pollution, waste and noise generation, and pressure on land for urban development results in a decline in quality of urban life and the degradation of the urban landscape. Open spaces are one of the most important aspects in the urban environment, yet it is often forgotten. Open space might be considered nonessential in less developed countries, but the large numbers of people who use urban open spaces and the value that people attribute to them confirm their importance. 12

What is open space? Generally, open space can be defined as land or water in an urban area that is not developed. More specifically, we describe it as areas such as a plazas, parks, courtyards and waterfront, left open to provide recreational areas for the public and to enhance the beauty, the health, and the social and environmental quality of neighborhoods.

Park

Recreation in urban open space may include active recreation (such as organized sports and individual exercise or children’s play) or passive recreation, which may include simply enjoying the open space and the company of others doing the same.

Design Stages Stage 1: Prepare a scoping study and project brief • Identify the land-use and project scope • Identify all the stakeholders • Identify key priority areas/pilot projects • Underline required surveys and GIS information Information mapping (Models) Stage 2: Information Mapping (Models) • Identify, map, and classify all the open spaces based on scale and function A-Parks from 300 m² to 8,000 m² (Pocket Parks) Most urban open spaces are in this category, small open spaces that can accommodate limited programs. We can also divide this category into four sub-categories: 1-Parks from 300 m² to 1,000 m² Small passive parks that include trails and benches only or some shaded gathering area.

2 - Parks from 1,000 m² to 2,500 m² Semi active parks that, in addition to trails and benches, can accommodate a children’s play area

3-Parks from 2,500 m² to 4,500 m² Active pocket parks that are big enough to include an adolescent activity area, like a multipurpose play area.

4-Parks from 4,500 m² to 8,000 m² Bigger pocket parks that, in addition to the above mentioned facilities, can accommodate a picnic area, kiosks, water feature, or art works.

13

I Urban Environment If a number of these smaller spaces in a neighborhood can be connected via green linkages or another design element, the resultant system can act like one large park with a comprehensive set of uses.

Going Public Edmondson Park (Briagade & Bardia Parks), NSW Australia By Sturt Noble Associates Project Principles Value our landscape While designing the greater estate layout, place making workshops were held with all stakeholders to determine the open space requirements for the future town centre and Edmondson Park residential precincts. Parks were strategically located and a vision developed for each park with the full range of recreational offerings located across the new suburb from pocket parks up to the new regional park being developed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Protect, Enhance, Regenerate Working with Campbelltown Council, we identified the Cumberland Plain Woodland (CPW) bush land site as providing special requirements

The thriving rain gardens provide both visual amenity and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) function.

16

for their park management teams. This also meant the council had to demonstrate to the community the positive benefits of these sensitive areas as opposed to traditional lawn style park spaces. A bush land plan of management was developed with consultants Ecological and objectives such as interpretive signage and development of CPW ownership through local bush care groups were promoted. Design with respect Sturt Noble was a strong advocate for managing the remaining CPW bushland on site, the protection of existing tree specimens and incorporating WSUD. There was resistance by various stakeholders to Sturt Noble’s proposal of retaining the existing landform in its natural form, as opposed to adopting a more typical “raised earth green field

The custom designed bench seat using the language of the interwar Art Deco pubs and displaying war ribbon colours in the tilework. policy (whereby landform is driven by engineering and road design). Sturt Noble attempted to reconcile the traditional, pre-European history of the site whilst in conjunction recognising the site’s former military history. Design for the future Whilst designing the greater estate layout, place making workshops were held with all Stakeholders. The outcomes from this were seamless pedestrian and cycle connections to the future town centre and Edmondson Park Railway Station, future schools and other facilities shown in the master plan. Playgrounds and exercise stations were cited along these routes to maximise opportunities for exercise, play and social gathering. More specific environmental initiatives included recycled bricks being used extensively throughout the project along with other recycled products including soil conditioners and mulches. Planting was predominantly native and species with low water requirements. Detailing for hard works including bridges, seating and retaining walls were in robust materials designed with long life cycles and limited maintenance. ROLE OF THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT Sturt Noble was the lead consultant and designed and delivered the complete project from preliminary design concepts to construction administration/ project delivery. Sturt Noble was a strong advocate for managing the remaining Cumberland Plain Woodland bushland on site, the protection of existing tree specimens and incorporating WSUD initiatives. They also took on the role of public artist and developed the artworks in house. The result was a highly celebrated, innovative and playful response to the brief which was to recognise the site’s history as a former military training base.

18

PROJECT OVERVIEW Brigade and Bardia Parks are new public parks serving the community of the Edmondson Park residential development. The parks contain a children’s playground, picnic areas, exercise facilities, bio swales, open turf and a series of art works incorporated into the landscape. As the first parks in what is effectively a new suburb, Brigade Park and Bardia Parks have set the benchmark for urban growth’s vision for this new residential precinct. The park’s green credentials were strengthened via the retention of a large portion of the threatened ecological community Cumberland Plain Woodland, which was incorporated into the park. SPECIAL FACTORS THE ARTWORK A series of artworks are located throughout the parks that reflect the site’s history as a military training facility. Edmondson Park once housed the Ingleburn Army Camp Site and “was the first purpose-built camp for the training of Australian Infantry to fight in World War II.” (www.landcom.com.au/downloads/file/SalesPlans/ EdmondsonParkandBardiaNewsletter_FINACOPY.pdf). The coloured ribbons of various Australian service medals including the Vietnam Medal, Australian Defence Medal and Australian Service medal were reinterpreted into the below landscape elements. ‘Ribbon Poles’ The traditional totem art form was reinterpreted as a European cultural icon by painting the military ribbon colours and bandwidths down these large Australian hardwood poles. This

The First Specialised Landscape magazine in the Middle East

juxtaposes the military history of decoration against an older and indigenous art form. ‘Ribbon Poles’ Artwork (by Sturt Noble) cited amongst an existing stand of Cumberland Plain Woodland

‘Ribbon Walls’ Plays a similar role with coloured tile bands representing the ribbon colours. The main feature wall/ planter at Bardia Park have been detailed to express the interwar architecture of public houses (pubs). WATER SENSITIVE URBAN DESIGN (WSUD) Although the project engineers specifically excluded any WSUD from the Parks, Sturt Noble promulgated and designed a large bioswale to separate the play area and bushland areas from the more formal park elements. This has been a huge success with vigorous growth of the planted macrophytes (with no irrigation) and provided another exciting adventure play opportunity. I Bollywood PARK

The park is Bollywood themed. How did you bring this affect to life through design? Our endeavor has been to showcase a world that connects people to the magic of Bollywood and evokes a sense of nostalgia for our fans. We have taken all the prominent elements from Mumbai, the home of Bollywood as well as India, and recreated the cinematic experience through themed attractions and rides spread across five zones: Bollywood Boulevard, Mumbai Chowk, Rustic Ravine, Royal Plaza and Bollywood Film Studios featuring Hall of Heroes. For instance, the heart and soul of Bollywood Parks™ Dubai, the Rajmahal Theatre has taken its inspiration from the beautiful palaces and intricate architecture designs seen within the palaces in India. Reflecting the artistic brilliance from the Mughal era, the Rajmahal Theatre embodies elements of design that will leave visitors spellbound. Other attractions located in the park, also displays inspiration from various famous landmarks in India. What research was done and what elements did you consider? Thomas Jellum A focus group study was done in order to better General Manager understand the visitor demographics for our park. Bollywood Parks Dubai Keeping in mind each family members needs and wants, the park was designed to appeal to a wide and diverse audience. The Rajmahal Theatre was designed to house the Middle East’s first resident Broadway-style Bollywood Musical show perfect for an amazing night out with friends and family. This separately ticketed show is also perfectly paired with a dinner fit for Royalty at Mughal-E-Azam, the parks “Shahi” or royal dining restaurant which is also designed around the beautiful architecture of Indian Palaces. Our IP’s have been chosen based on Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters that translate perfectly into world class rides and attractions, keeping in mind that they will be enjoyed by families, whether it’s the 3D and 4D simulation rides of Ra. One and Krrish or the urge to know and learn what goes on into the making of a film with our Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara attraction.

Bollywood comes to Dubai

The First Specialised Landscape magazine in the Middle East

We have selected movies such as Dabangg, Rock On!! and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, that have extremely popular soundtracks, dance sequences and vibrant costumes that translate well for live stage shows. Bollywood Parks™ Dubai caters to a wide demographic, bound by a love or curiosity for the magic of Bollywood, the Hindi language film industry which is one of the largest centres of film production in the world, based in Mumbai, India. While the sub-continent has a natural affinity and is familiar with Bollywood cinema, the park offers first-time enthusiasts across the globe an entertaining experience recreating the music, dance, drama, fun and flavours of Bollywood. How does the parks design affect visitor functionality? Everything that visitors do, think, sense, and feel in a park constitutes their experience. We have ensured that our visitors get nothing short of the best. The park was designed in such a way that as soon as the guests walks through the entrance, they are surrounded by the sights, sounds and colours that are synonymous to Bollywood and India. The layout of each zone and attraction was done with the intention to “surprise” our visitors. As you step further into the park the twists and turns of the beautiful paved streets reveal each of the indivisually themed areas. Just walking through the entrance that leads into the Bollywood Boulevard, leads you down a colourful street that curves to reveal the stunning Rajmahal Theatre.

What Indian influences can we see through the landscape and design? The park will recreate the Bollywood experience through themed attractions and rides spread across five zones: Bollywood Boulevard, Mumbai Chowk, Rustic Ravine, Royal Plaza and Bollywood Film Studios featuring Hall of Heroes. Bollywood Boulevard: This district is also the entrance for the world’s first Bollywood themed park, so the elements displayed here are from the iconic Gate Way of India. The zone will also have Rock On!!, a stylish restaurant that celebrates the movie’s dynamic band Magik and their captivating music. Visitors can enjoy the live band, while being served mouthwatering appetizers and beverages. Mumbai Chowk: Staying true to the feel of a street market, this district includes design elements from the all leading Bazaars in Mumbai. Also sites like the replica of the famous heritage site in Mumbai – Victoria Station that houses a local train and street-style themed food carts will exhibit the true nature of Mumbai. The zone will also host a 3D immersive tunnel ride called Don, The Chase based on the movie Don incorporating a high speed car chase with thrills and twists. Rustic Ravine: Inspired by Bollywood hits such as Lagaan, Dabangg and Sholay, this district will take you to the village set up of India where you

can familiarize with the local touch and textures. The F&B options will also shed the same ethos, replicating the famous Dhabbas that you see on Indian highways. The Lagaan section will feature a mini carnival in the Champaner village with a Ferris Wheel, Carousel and three mini carnival games as well as the Lagaan Thrill of Victory ride which is a motion based simulator experience. This zone will also have an interactive trackbound dark ride called Sholay, The Hunt for Gabbar Singh with 3D projections, themed show scenes and 4D effects. Riders shoot their way through key scenes from the Bollywood classic film, Sholay. Witness unbelievable action at the Dabangg Stunt Spectacular show. Set in an abandoned warehouse the bad guys are out to take revenge on Chulbul Pandey and kill him when he gets there. Royal Plaza: As the name suggests, the inspiration taken, is from the rich Mughal dynasty that has translated into major monuments in India today. Mughal-e-Azam, the fine dining restaurant has intricate detailing that reflects

the known design elements from the era. You will be treated like Royalty at Mughal-e-Azam, with interiors set to impress and a cuisine that pays homage to the splendor of ancient kings. As you enter Bollywood Film Studios featuring Hall of Heroes, you can get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes of a Bollywood movie production and a live stage show, based on the blockbuster Bollywood Movie “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”. The RA.One virtual ride aptly named RA.One Unleashed at the Hall of Heroes section is a 4D multi-sensory theatre experience that takes audience on a virtual thrill ride. Also the zone will feature Krrish Hero’s Flight the region’s first flying theatre experience recreated from the blockbuster movie Krrish. Were there any difficulties to overcome with the brief? Our main challenge was to fill, 1.7 million square-feet of space with fun and excitement that payed tribute to our blockbuster movie selections translated into fantastic rides and attractions that would be suitable for families. Given the size of this single park within Dubai Parks and Resorts, we emphasized on the management of space so that all the five zones attain proper spacing to ensure that each area’s theme is true to the colours and sights of India. Keeping the visitor’s attentioned wraped within each zone, the construction layout helped us to keep the surprise element alive for each zone. It took 18 months to finalize the design and final plan of the park, and then further directing the efforts of thousands of workers to ensure

24

seamless functioning and right depiction of each and every design aspect within the park as planned. What is the cost of the design? In terms of the cost, Bollywood Parks™ Dubai is part of Dubai Parks & Resorts that values up to AED 13.2 billion development spread across 30.6 million square feet of land located on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai opposite the Palm Jebel Ali equidistant to Dubai and Abu Dhabi International Airports, and is expected to generate 6.7 million ticketed visits in 2017, the first full year of operation. Is there anything unique in its design that stands out as an attraction? Being the first Bollywood themed park in the world, we want visitors to feel they have entered the world of Bollywood. Our endeavor has been to take all the prominent elements from India and combine it in a way to best bring alive the park. Each zone is different in terms of design and experience. Each zone has inspirations that will evoke a sense of nostalgia when you enter the park, it’a dream come true for all Bollywood fans across the world and a wonder to be discovered for all others. We want to give our visitors the chance to become a part of their favourite movies and also give them an unforgettable experience with all the other attractions at the park, be it the opulent Rajmahal Theatre designed keeping in mind the historical landmarks in India, or the Mumbai Chowk, which replicates the hustle and bustle of Bollywood capital, Mumbai. Each attraction stands out from the other and is unique in it’s design and set up.

The Hive

The centrepiece of the multi-award winning UK Pavilion at the Milan Expo, The Hive, opened to the public on June 14 in its new location at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London. By James Millington, BDP The same team who designed the original pavilion in Milan have been responsible for bringing the structure home and integrating it into its new setting where it will live for the next two years. The Hive uses light and sound to highlight the challenges facing bees today and their important role as pollinators. BDP’s landscape architect team, led by director James Millington, once again worked closely with Wolfgang Buttress, the artist responsible for the Hive, to create a sympathetic landscape setting for the 17metre high installation that is accessible for all and takes visitors on an immersive journey through a colourful and vibrant wildflower meadow into the world of the honeybee.

27

I Pavillion

A break in a newly planted mixed native species hedge leads to a gradually tapering path then draws visitors beneath the Hive where they enter a circular amphitheatre space, enclosed by a steep bank of wildflowers. A low gabion seat wall runs around the perimeter to allow visitors to sit and enjoy the calm and peace of the space. The journey continues with a steady climb through the wildflower meadow with pause points consisting of gabion benches and interpretation panels positioned at regular intervals to allow people to stop and rest and learn about the importance of bees in food production and the Hive structure. The path sweeps its way gently through the reshaped landscape leading to the entrance of the Hive via a steel and timber bridge link. Inside the Hive visitors can experience the beauty of the surrounding landscape accompanied by a unique humming and buzzing soundtrack

28

with a thousand LED lights that glow and fade depending on the level of activity of a real beehive at Kew to which it is linked. A mix of wildflower planting has been used within the meadows to provide different experiences and a variety of different food sources of pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinators. A native mix of perennial wildflowers has been used for the outer areas of meadow offering a subtle colour palette of flowers. Closer to the Hive this is replaced with a mix of bright annual and perennial wildflowers, described by Tony Kirkham Head of Arboretum and Horticultural Services at Kew Gardens, as ‘wildflower bling.’ Extra impact is provided by an under planting of summer bulbs throughout the wildflower meadows. The BDP team worked with artist Wolfgang Buttress, structural engineer Tristan Simmonds and main contractor Stage One. BDP also acted as principal designer.

I Skate park

Creating communities, one skate park at a time Can you build a community in just over a year and can you build a community through building a skate park? The answer to both these questions is a resounding, ‘yes’ if you’re Convic, one of the world’s leading community, youth space and wheeled sport park developers. By Convic In the past year and a half, the Australian company has established its first overseas office in Dubai and saw the conceptualisation, design, build, and activation of its first regional project – a 3200m2 XDubai skate park at Kite Beach. “Convic helps establish and enhance vibrant, active and sustainable communities through creating dynamic public recreation spaces that appeal to youth, their families, and action sport enthusiasts of all ages,” said Julius Turanyik, General Manager of Convic. “Through consistently delivering holistic and expert service and of course, delivering an innovative and engaging end-product, we have firmly established our reputation within cities and amongst clients globally.” It was not only the company’s credentials in designing over 700 community action sport parks, or their 17 design awards and accolades including a Guinness World Record in 2005 - that had likely appealed to Dubai decision-makers but it was also their clear focus on establishing youth-oriented, yet inclusive spaces, that throughout the past 18 years, have resulted in sustainable and active communities. “The opportunity that existed in such a vibrant, growing and young city like Dubai was clear to us and our entire team was thrilled to be a part of such an important project. Convic-designed spaces bring the community together and inspire active lifestyles as they alsosignificant value to developments and cities. We believe that this was clearly demonstrated throughout our initial discussions with XDubai, as well as throughout the design and build process.”

I Skate park

As the skate park was to be the largest and most advanced of its kind, not only within Dubai but also within the region, no level of detail was spared. With an ideal beachfront location at Dubai’s popular Kite Beach, attention at the concept and design phase for the skate park focused on engaging youth and skateboarders, while at the same time, making the space a focal point for all members of the community. To match the iconic surrounds of the Jumeirah Beach waterfront and with the Burj Al Arab as a backdrop, the park needed to have iconic qualities, be instantly recognisable yet, at the same time, become ingrained within this active, vibrant and growing neighbourhood of Dubai. “At the concept stage, we considered all the proposed uses - how we would create a balance between public use and the needs of the sports community. We also needed an integrated layout design that enables skill progression within the facility. The context and space we were designing in and around was also key so with all uses and requirements considered, we established a number of clearly defined spaces or zones,” says Mr Turanyik. “These zones in turn, informed the skate park’s overall structure and design composition at every stage, ensuring that overall objectives were front and centre throughout the entire process.” This zoned approach, for the park’s design required connection. Not only for transitional links to the surrounding beachfront, neighbourhood cafes, and adjacent parks, but throughout the facility to encourage community participation. A series of pathways woven throughout the entirety of the park, allows pedestrians the opportunity to comfortably experience the highly active wheeled sports areas from varying angles and intensities.

32

Scattered refuge areas consisting of lush grass planting, sloped lawns, shade palms and macro particle seating with integrated power and Wi-Fi also provide an ideal location for spectating and refuge, while undoing the common image of expansive hardscape associated with skate parks. This continuity and direct contact of vegetation, social provision and skateable terrain interweave to create a parkland setting within an ‘active oasis’. As the park would be used by experienced skateboarders and action sport athletes, as well as those who were learning, care also had to be taken to create skating areas that are dynamic yet inclusive. To achieve this, a low profile skate plaza with unique street elements and transition flow area connecting banks, blocks and quarter-pipes created continuous runs that appealed to athletes of all ages and abilities. Convic focused more a variety of street skate elements in the central space of the plaza, a space that would also allow for larger events and exhibitions. Obstacles including ramps, ledges, banks, steps, walls, rails, and grinding poles were planned giving users a platform to showcase their abilities, as it also accommodates varying skill levels for both everyday use, as well as competitions. Also pleasing intermediate to expert skateboarders, and appealing to the aspiration of novice skateboarders is one of the defining features of the park, the XBowl. The biggest feature of the park’s skate area, and with the deepest reaches rivalling some of the world’s most challenging bowls at 3.2m deep, XBowl provides a challenging skate environment for more advanced and intermediate skaters. To encourage continuous activity and usage throughout both day time hours as well as into the night, the park was shaded by a large

shade structure with open sections for palms to poke through, creating an interactive space filtered with dappled light and shade. This integrated lighting also created a night-ready facility for day to day usage as well as events. Following a collaborative design and build stage that saw a mixture of leisure spaces, spectator areas and a variety of skate features, the XDubai skate park was inaugurated on 14 January, 2016 and nine months’ after its opening at Kite Beach, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “We at Convic, have had a tremendous response from across the UAE, and region since the completion of the XDubai skate park as organizations, developers and destinations are now seeing first hand, the value and benefits that this type of public space offers to not just

youth, but the community at large. Since the launch of the park, we have seen youth of all ages take part in sport and more importantly, their family and friends joining them to enjoy a healthy outdoor lifestyle, adds Mr Turanyik. Earlier this year, Convic also conducted a small survey of skate park users within Dubai that reinforced the park’s success. Overall, the results showcased that the park is highly valued by action sport participants and the community at large, but that they would welcome additional parks within the UAE and the region. Among the findings was that 100 percent of the action sport participants polled reported that that they go to XDubai skate park, with 92 percent stating that they regularly go to the park, either a few

36

The First Specialised Landscape magazine in the Middle East

times a week or a few times a month. In line with this finding, 94 percent of those who responded also said that they would like to see more skate parks in the UAE and Middle East, a point not lost on Convic. With the recent International Olympic Committee decision to include skateboarding in the Tokyo Summer Games in 2020, Convic believes that the success of the space and the platform it provides for young athletes and the community at large, further paves the way for other facilities of its nature within the region. “With XDubai we have created an exceptional and architecturally appealing space that is uniquely Dubai. By virtue of its design, and also location within the emirate and UAE, the park provides a platform for the community and for budding and elite athletes, as well as a venue for both home-grown as well as international events. It is an investment in the city, the community and in particular, its young members,” adds Mr Turanyik. “We believe strongly that it will pay dividends for many years to come.” With its first Middle Eastern project a resounding success, and a presence firmly set in Dubai, Convic has now set its sights on regional expansion and is in the process of working with various regional organisations on plans for future parks. With plans to be announced in due course, Convic says that developers, observers and athletes and can expect spaces that will likely include a variety of features and elements that appeal to the broader community such as street art, event and stage spaces, seating, action play zones, terraces, yoga spaces, BBQ and picnic areas, fountains, and sport facilities such as half-court basketball courts, table tennis tables, or parkour features.

“As the world’s only sports action park developer with operations in the Middle East, Convic is ideally placed to partner with the region’s developers, destinations and sports organisations, as well as action sports enthusiasts and the wider community to create fun, dynamic and inclusive spaces for sport and activity. The benefits of public spaces are widely known and in addition to fostering social cohesiveness, they also foster healthy activity through sport, support local economies and attract further investment. The same is no different for action sport parks”.

Transforming communities Much has been achieved over the past two decades to transform the Sydney Park site from its former post-industrial history and waste disposal, into 44 hectares of parkland and a vital asset for the growing communities of Sydney’s southern suburbs. By: Turf Design Studio & Environmental Partnership This project forms the City of Sydney’s largest environmental project to date, built in partnership with the Australian Government through the National Urban Water and Desalination Plan. It is an integral component of Sustainable Sydney 2030; targeting ten percent of water demand to be met through local water capture and re-use in the park. The city also seized the once in a lifetime opportunity to use what was essentially an infrastructure project to breathe new life into the park - as a vibrant recreation and environmental asset for Sydney.

38

The city engaged a design team led by landscape architects Turf Design Studio & Environmental Partnership who orchestrated an intense and multidisciplinary collaboration intersecting design, art, science and ecology - in a ‘roundtable’ of creative’s shared between water experts Alluvium, artists Turpin + Crawford Studio, ecologists Dragonfly Environmental, engineers Partridge and the City’s own Landscape Architects. The result is an interwoven series of community infrastructures and ‘made’ systems - water re-use, recreation, biodiversity and

habitat all integrated within the physical fabric of Sydney Park. Sydney Park now offers an enhanced recreational experience to the Sydney community, going beyond the picturesque; creating instead a revitalised, multi-faceted waterscape that celebrates the connection between people and place. After an intensive process of ‘easing in’, the water re-use project is now fully operational and intrinsically linked with its park setting. The bioretention wetlands not only capture and clean the equivalent measure of 340 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth per annum, but successfully improve

local water quality, habitat and reduces potable water consumption in the area. The park’s fauna and flora is thriving, with new habitats created and existing ones protected and enhanced throughout the park. The function and processes of water harvesting and cleansing is enhanced through its visible ebbs and flows through the landscape. New pathways intersect the wetlands, allowing park users to explore and discover ‘moments’ in the landscape that can be at times playful, dramatic and peaceful, but at all times connected to the water narrative of capture, movement, and cleansing.

Highlighting these processes was an important part of the project, as they emphasise the intrinsic relationship between water, people, topography, flora and fauna. Public art is interwoven; Turpin + Crawford Studio’s ‘Water Falls’ celebrates clean water release while also working with TDEP’s cascades to aerate water in the last link in the bioremediation treatment train. Turpin + Crawford Studio also devised the water ‘exhaust fans’ that celebrate the transfer of water from bioremediation ‘paddies’ to the lagoons; playing on the spirit of water and its interactions with the landscape. How has synthetic pitches improved over the last 20 years? One of the earliest adopters of synthetic turf pitches was the independent school sector, with sand filled, multi-use pitches installed in the late 1980s. In those days the surfaces were very hard, but allowed schools to progress from a shale type surfaces to a more luxurious green, grass like top, this was perfect for hockey and tennis and acceptable for recreational football. Since then the improvements in synthetic turf have been considerable. First in the late 1990s less sand was used as an infill and a curly yarn surface adopted that improved ball roll for hockey. Then in the mid 2000s schools started to look at the new third generation (3G) surfaces that allowed both football and rugby to be played. Some schools have seen their playing surface changed three or four times, and some have added extra pitches, often with a different surface for a specific sport. What is without question is the value that a synthetic turf pitch brings to schools. Available in most weather conditions, often a far better surface for coaching, training and playing matches on, a school without synthetic turf is now a rarity. The quality of sports facilities, as well as the schools sporting reputation have often been key factors in parents choosing a particular school for their child. What to look for when choosing the right pitch system for your school or college? The most important point to consider when looking at the right pitch system for your school is, the types of sports that will be played on them. For Hockey for example, the ideal surface is a non-directional, dense sand-dressed surface, It will have a sand dressing that is evenly brushed into the surface so that it is no longer visible. It would be laid onto a shockpad, most commonly made of recycled tyre and a resin binder of to hold it together. A well laid pad should last at least two pitch lives. This surface can accommodate recreational football, tennis and lacrosse. The pitch and surrounds can be in different colours, with different colours also used for the playing lines. There are more surface options for football, often depending upon what
other sports are under consideration. A 60mm pile height surface with a pad works perfectly with rugby. For hockey it is much different and a lower pile height around 40mm, probably using a fibrillated fibre would need to be used, and even then the quality of hockey play For pure football use, the two options are to lay a 60mm monofilament surface onto a stone or porous asphalt base, or a 40mm surface onto a shockpad, onto a stone base. The type of a shockpad is the same as rugby.

How to install synthetic turf pitches at your school or college? The difference in a great synthetic turf pitch and an average one often lies in the quality of the installation. Whilst the skills required are reasonably easy to acquire, the attention to detail, the consistency of approach and the standard expected influences the performance of the surface, as much as the quality of the turf used. The installation team should be experienced, organised and have the right equipment. It is also essential to ensure that there is site supervision to ensure the overall quality of the work. Whether the pitch is ultimately tested to governing body standards or not, achieving the right result should not be in question. What is the value and benefits of a synthetic pitch to a school? The first synthetic turf pitches installed at hockey playing schools raised the quality of hockey so that often the school became recognised for its prowess in that sport. This recognition was not initially planned but became an early, extra value to a schools sporting reputation. The pitches were a tremendous success, especially when also used to increase the number of tennis courts available in the summer term. I have yet to hear of a school that removed or stopped using its synthetic turf pitch. Schools quickly realised that the standard of hockey improved greatly, the pitch was available to the whole school, not just the first teams, that it proved an attraction to parents when choosing what school to send their child to, and was a potentially a revenue earner. These benefits are still true today. Fundamentally, a synthetic turf pitch offers so much to a school and to its pupils. Those early adopters are now on their third or fourth surface, some have built additional pitches and others are planning more. In recent years non hockey playing schools have started to consider synthetic turf for rugby and football. The longer pile systems offer year round perfect playing conditions, and have become invaluable in the wet winters when, previously, match after match was cancelled due to the poor condition of the natural turf fields. Throw in the late afternoon and evening use, during the rugby and football terms, that is now possible on the floodlit synthetic turf pitch, and a school has extended its coaching and playing hours, and in turn offers more to its pupils. Many schools have ties with local clubs, which hire the facility in the evenings and at weekends, when the school is not using the pitch. This is an excellent way to involve the community and helps build strong links. It can also be a generator of additional income, with some schools earning over ÂŁ80,000 per annum this way, possibly much more. In some instances professional clubs will link with schools and assist with coaching, again adding value for the school and its pupils.
